Zach Charbonnet Now Holds All Time True Freshman Rushing TDs Record
Zach Charbonnet is now the all time leader in rushing TDs by a true freshman in Michigan Football history. He had 2 against Maryland, giving him 11 total. The previous record was 9 held by two RBs, Tyrone Wheatley and Mike Hart.
A big, well deserved HatTip to Ed Warinner! The running game has clearly improved with him on staff.
Here's every Zach Charbonnet TD from this season, so far:
If you're wondering what the record for most TDs in a season by any player, (sophomore, junior, senior) it's 26, held by a guy named Albert Herrnstein, set in 1902.

1) Make post about obscure Michigan football fact.
2) Add more depth to this fact, that no one asked for.
Wolverine devotee is that you ?
November 4th, 2019 at 8:13 AM ^
I was going to say the same thing....
November 4th, 2019 at 9:09 AM ^
It really isn’t an obscure football fact. They even talked about it during the game.
November 4th, 2019 at 1:46 PM ^
I don't know how a rushing TD record is an obscure factoid.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:11 PM ^
I’m not new to down voting. But in this case I don’t get it ? How was my comment offensive ? Lol
was the word use of obscure the problem ?
November 4th, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
I’m surprised this never came up during the TV broadcast on Saturday.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:30 AM ^
I vaguely remember hearing them mention this.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:02 AM ^
It was mentioned. My first reaction to the comment above was that he left off the “/s” and was throwing snark at the OP.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:31 AM ^
Your first reaction was the correct one.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:36 AM ^
That was my first thought. The highlight real was fun. Any record for TDs should have an asterisk for all TDs under 3 yards. While those aren't guaranteed, they are pretty much a gift to the RB/FB. Maybe they should count half. Charbonnet does have some nice ones from 5 to 15 yards out. Anything outside the redzone should count double.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:30 AM ^
Yeah, and while were at it we shouldn't count touchdown passes as stats for the quarterbacks either, because after all it was the receiver who went into the endzone!
November 4th, 2019 at 8:32 AM ^
You try running the ball in from the 2 against FBS competition and tell me if it was "a gift".
November 4th, 2019 at 8:43 AM ^
Yea really. Tell that to the Lions last night.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:26 AM ^
Charbonnet is a tough person. The coaches know who should be carrying it there. Look at how many times there is contact before he gets in. Other RBs would probably go down, or be slowed so much, from that contact, that other defenders will get to them, and they wouldn't get in.
TDs are tough to come by. But it's easy to type out a comment that minimizes what Zack Charbonnet is doing.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:43 AM ^
Oh c'mon, get reel!
November 4th, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
+1 for subtle, but still very good.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:32 AM ^
Your comments should have an asterisk next to them.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:36 AM ^
It was on the ESPN bottom line during the primetime games.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:54 AM ^
Thank, you sir. That got me laughing right out of the gate this morning.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:46 AM ^
Pfffft. Next thing you know Charles Matthews transferred in from somewhere.
November 4th, 2019 at 2:01 PM ^
And lemme tell ya, if you break any record at Michigan, that's sayin' something!
November 4th, 2019 at 7:27 AM ^
Fun fact: Charbonet has also tied Higdon as Harbaugh's highest-scoring player.

Another fun fact - every Charbonnet touchdown at the Big House is in the south end zone.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:42 AM ^
He is getting better with time. The improvement in the O-Line has done a lot for him too.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:55 AM ^
He showed up better than he is now, pretty clearly injured something, and is now coming back up to speed.
November 4th, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
I have beef with the S&C staff. I feel they mismanaged a few guys by adding bulk over speed.
Charbonnet, Chris Evans, DPJ, Black, etc.
I understand that the S&C guy came from Wisconsin, thus implementing Wisconsin type stuff that makes players bulkier and slower.
November 4th, 2019 at 7:48 AM ^
Nice job on this post. Does Zach start next season as a contender for a Heisman? Or does M have too many great guys in the stable and keep spreading it around? Sure have been effective so far this year, and with the blocking really looking organized, I think we're in nice shape.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:18 AM ^
I don’t think he would make a very good quarterback
November 4th, 2019 at 8:27 AM ^
“Does Zach start next season as a contender for a Heisman?”
That’s just slightly less unrealistic than the pre-season chatter by some fans that Shea had real potential to be in NY as a Heisman finalist.
To be a true Heisman candidate as a RB you need to either be 1) an electric, game-dominating talent; 2) an upperclassman with a stat-heavy career under your belt like Ron Dayne; or 3) pile up crazy statistics during the season for a run-dominant team that’s in NC contention deep into the season, like Rashaan Salaam. None applies to Charbonnet for 2020, and considering how Salaam’s career ended up, that is probably a good thing.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
We’ve gone from the September Heisman to the NEXT September Heisman.
November 4th, 2019 at 10:00 AM ^
Which might be the most Michigan thing ever!
November 4th, 2019 at 9:10 AM ^
I agree with premise that Heisman chatter is a bit ridiculous however It’s not really fair to put limitations on his or the team’s development.
Zach is both remarkably patient and powerful in the red zone. He certainly has a knack for finding the end zone and finding a way to drive through guys to get there.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:18 AM ^
He is not going to have a chance with our 2 guards and left Tackle gone. Our line will not be near as good next year - especially if Ruiz also leaves.
I think Zach will obvious improve, but the line will be a little worse - meaning he will do about what he is doing now IMO.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:40 AM ^
Our line will not be near as good next year
How do you know?
November 4th, 2019 at 10:03 AM ^
Unfortunately, we are losing three (possibly four) of the starters to the draft. If there isn't a drop in production, then I'll nominate Ed Warinner for some Noble Prize.
November 4th, 2019 at 10:25 AM ^
Yeah Ed is clearly good, but replacing 3 (possibly 4) NFL bound linemen with almost 3 years starting experience each without a dropoff would be the coaching task of the century.
I'd be happy if the line next year ends the season on par with this unit, or close to it. But there will definitely be growing pains.
November 4th, 2019 at 10:34 AM ^
Mayfield next year should be much better than Mayfield this year. Hayes has higher upside than Runyan for a tackle and will be hitting that 3rd year in the program sweet spot. Ruiz should probably come back.
Hit on a couple guards. Maybe Stueber moves there.
So many variables....The line should be a strength next year.
November 4th, 2019 at 11:22 AM ^
I'd be completely satisfied if Charbonnet/Haskins became our version of Lawrence Maroney/Marion Barber or Darren McFadden/Felix Jones or Cadillac Williams/Ronnie Brown. Hey, a guy can dream, right?
November 4th, 2019 at 7:55 AM ^
No hat tip to his position coach as well? I mean I agree that Ed is a big reason we're able to do anything on the ground but for all the crap Jaybaugh takes on this board..... He was Zach primary recruiter, Hassan Haskins primary recruiter, is bringing in Blake Corum and has us in pole position with Donovan Edwards. I'm not a wild enthusiast of his but he's improved the talent at that position at the very least.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:00 AM ^
I don’t like like the nepotism hire, but either Zach C is the world’s most natural RB blocker, or Jay is doing a good job.
If one more young RB comes in blocking like a stud I’ll stop complaining about Jay forever.
November 4th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
If one more young RB comes in blocking like a stud I’ll stop complaining about Jay forever.
Or at least until the next RB does something wrong.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:15 AM ^
Would this be happening if Ed Warinner wasn't here? Tell me how many RBs Jay Harbaugh has got into the pros? Tell about the running game with him before Ed Warinner got here.
Let's not give credit to the rooster for the sun rising.
November 4th, 2019 at 9:36 AM ^
What the hell are you even trying to say?
Michigan has had a very solid run game throughout all of Jay's tenure -- you should check your facts. Also, "Let's not give credit to the rooster for the sun rising." Ok, by that standard I guess Saban is a pretty average coach and all of his position coaches are shit, because after all they are doing is staying out of the way and watching the sun rise
November 4th, 2019 at 9:46 AM ^
Did you check any facts first?
November 4th, 2019 at 11:35 AM ^
Michigan Team Rushing:
2016: 212.9 Yds per game / 4.8 YPC / #2 in B1G
2017: 177.7 Yds per game / 4.4 YPC / #4 in B1G
2018: 203.8 Yds per game / 4.8 YPC / #6 in B1G
2019: 170.7 Yds per game / 4.2 YPC / #6 in B1G
As I mentioned, solid but not spectacular. You are praising Warriner when the statistics show that UM's rushing game has largely remained steady if not slightly declined since he joined. So tell me again, what the hell are you trying to say?
November 4th, 2019 at 10:14 AM ^
Pushing an agenda on as many comments as possible in the thread while taking a hostile and argumentative approach? Hold on stay right there....

So I'm sitting here is sweat pants and sneakers, didn't eat breakfast yet, deciding what to eat, maybe peanut butters and jelly on heavy whole wheat bread, warmed in my mini oven toaster, probably go to the gym and Best Buy later, and get to bed early tonight, after having 1 or 2 beers with dinner, and let's see what else I got going on.... oh yeah, that diabolical scheming agenda about Michigan's running game thingy...…
Ok, ok...….
Hey!
This is what I really got, my deciding what to have for breakfast agenda. That's about as far as it's going right now.
