OT:Americans advance to 2019 WJC semis
An exciting day in Vancouver:
- Switzerland upsets Sweden
- Finland shocks host Canada 2-1 in OT after a miraculous last-minute tying goal and a saved penalty shot in OT
- Yanjs have just held on vs. Czechs, also 2-1
And everybody's favorite squad, Russia, takes on Slovakia in the nightcap.
Has been a fun tournament so far, watching the Hughes brothers excel. Filip Zadina, the Czech winger and highest rated Red Wings prospect, did not have a great tournament but that was to be expected.

What's crazy is that Sweden is 48-0 since 2008 in the preliminary rounds and then 14-14 in the knockout rounds with just 1 gold medal along the way.

They historically get a pretty favorable draw in the round robin by avoiding both Canada and US.

RIP Canadian Hockey

Their captain had the penalty shot in OT also. Choked on home soil. That one will sting for quite some time.

I'm scared of Yanjs. Is that some kind of super human hockey race?

Yes, and they have really fat fingers apparently.

Looks like they get the Russians in the Semis as they're steam rolling Slovakia, already.

Game times announced for the Friday Semifinals:
Russia v USA, 1:00 PST/4:00 EST
Finland v Switzerland, 5:00 PST/8:00 EST
The championship game is Saturday at 8:00 EST, so it will be going on at the same time as the M v ND outdoor hockey game.

Vancouvers great....but it’s an antalgic bottleneck on the way to blackcomb, imo. ...needs a highway bybass. Btw, incredible number of wings fans here... helps having FSD on basic cable. It’d be an almost perfect city if it had strohs....noble hops, 2 row malted Fire brewed.

Don’t know what antalgic means, but I agree it is annoying for getting to whistler from Seattle. We usually get the trip started by 5 am to avoid most of the traffic. A good alternative is to go to Vancouver for the night, eat some great Asian cuisine, then head up to Whistler the next morning

Wow, I know Sweden has had its share of trouble in the knockout rounds but Switzerland, ouch.

Nothing to do with this tournament nor these players but they did win the Silver at the World Championships this past Spring. Best year in Swiss history.

That Finland - Canada game was awesome. USA has such a clear path now...time to bring another gold home!

Is Jack Hughes playing again. He was hurt in their opening game and missed the next two
January 3rd, 2019 at 9:30 AM ^
Yes he played last night. First game since the opening game of the tournament.

I only saw two Canada games on tv... versus Russia and Finland. They looked outclassed in both games.
