Best Movie for July 4th & Rest of the Summer
I'm wondering what the best movie is for July 4th: I'm taking Jaws.
And what is the best summer movie to watch?
Bonus: If you haven't' seen it, Billy Murray's Lost Theme for Jaws where he throws a figurative 102 mph fastball:

I think how SNL got the rights to use Jaws is hilarious:
“Downey thought it was really important to have Jaws footage in the shot. I think Lorne thought it was distracting, which is great because even leading up to it, they were having an argument about that. Lorne’s like, ‘You can’t clear the footage,’ and Downey’s like, ‘Well, Spielberg’s here. Let’s just ask him.’ There was no need to go through a middle man on this night based on who was in the room.”
Spielberg said it was fine to use the footage.
Sandlot, Jaws, The Patriot, and Independence Day, In that order for me.
National Treasure 2!
- Sandlot
- National treasure 1, 2
- That civil war doc/movie with dumb & dumber guy
Fin
Do you mean "Gods and Generals?"
Uh, that would be Gettysburg. Clods and Generals was an abomination in the eyes of God.
Top Gun, definitely!
Solid choice
100% agree with Jaws. Its a tradition for me to watch it every single 4th. Glad I'm not the only one to think that.
Jaws, Jaws, Jaws.
Did they have to get permission? Its satire, and it's called landshark.
Well, this one wasn't landshark, but yes I agree. The point was that Lorne Michaels was arguing with the writer who had fought for 35 years. The writer got his way on his specific vision of the skit because the event was so star studded that Steven Spielberg was right there to sign off on it.
Yep, like previously mentioned - Sandlot, Jaws, Top Gun, maybe Jurassic Park, Point Break, or Terminator 2. I saw the last 3 during the summer when I was a kid so they get nostalgia points.
My family is in Chicago for the annual 4th trip to see her side of the family. I have Movie Pass, it’s hot as hell outside, I was bored, so I saw “Solo” this afternoon. I was a great way to veg for a few hours in a reclining chair (they were recently added).
Watching it every 4th will NOT become a tradition!
Born on the 4th of July
Camp Nowhere and Heavyweights. A couple of summer classics from my youth.
C'mon - "Caddyshack" is the all time best summer movie! Any other debate should be for 2nd place...
Hidden gem and decent family fun: "Meatballs". Early Bill Murray - good stuff.
Jaws (naturally), Independence Day (ditto), Lake Placid, The Great Outdoors.
Any of the 10 Star Wars movies. My answer is always Star Wars.
I Know What You Did Last Summer!
My 6 year old just asked to watch Independence Day, and a tear ran down my eye.
Personally, I love watching Blackhawk Down.
The Great Escape for the Independence Day scene, which includes James Garner, JH’s favorite actor.
Its not fourth of July without a viewing of "1776" or "Yankee Doodle Dandy"
Saw a few people mention Independence Day, so I have to ask: Was that movie always so cringey? I was a kid when it came out and, of course, loved it. However, I watched it again a few years ago and...wow.
I've been trying to decide what movie would be perfect for the maiden voyage of our backyard movie screen. Jaws is a great choice. For summer movies, I also like Raiders of the Lost Ark. Although some may think of it as a chick movie, Strictly Ballroom was good and funny.
American Graffiti for consideration
Jaws may be the GOAT
Star Wars, Caddyshack, Sandlot cannot be dismissed.
I really, really, really like the drum and fife scene with James Garner in The Great Escape
Any of the first three Superman movies will do.
