I'm no film guru and I look forward to input from the more knowledgable posters, but at a minimum looks like a big kid with great straight line speed for his size. Rivals/Scout seem to agree he is around 230...any chance this kid grows into a wde?
Welcome aboard Noah!
But I think the plan is that he will be a SLB. At 6'4 230, he needs to put on about 15 lbs to be in the Jake Ryan mold and retain that straight line speed.
yeah, those first few plays certainly felt like watching Ryan. Couldn't recall how big he was when he came in and didn't know if Furbush had the type of frame that would keep in the SLB range or had room for 35 lbs.
Will be interesting to see how the class unfolds the rest of the way and where exactly it ends up in terms of numbers.
They're recruiting him for the inside. Seems a little tall for a Mike to me, but that's why I know nothing.
I was as surprised as anyone to know that, but yes he's being looked at inside, at least right now. I assume these things can definitely change.
.... I think I want him at SLB or WDE for one reason..
"Cox and Butt Double-team Furbush."
Wow, I wanted him on the team after only watching two plays.
I normally look at these videos and don't see much difference between them.
I know it's highlight tape, but he appears to be a young man that really, really enjoys tackling people.
BOOOOYAAAAAAAA!
They want Furbush to be a SAM LB and are looking at Drue as a safety prospect.
No, they are recruiting Furbush for WLB. Not SAM.
Just looking at the position, I don't think Furbush has the athletic ability to play the Will... now... he COULD play inside at the Mike but I am guessing once he gets on campus and hits the weight room he will be a Sam/WDE on passing downs role
They're recruiting Furbush for MIKE.
They're recruiting Furbush for BOUBACAR
I need a dictionary of football acronyms.
You can cut out 2 of those - SLB = SAM and WLB = WILL.
So you should be good. Same with SAM and WILL.
And for your own sake, don't try to start figuring out what various coaches call their OLB/safety hybrids.
That's good enough for government work, because that sure is some government-level acronym making right there. Touchee, friend, touchee.
EDIT: Moderation should have been either "Insightful" or "Informative", but I couldn't really figure out the difference, so I was just like "this post is really normal" and so that's why it is what it is.
SAM = Strongside attack monster
WILL= Weakside Insane Lineman Laminator
using the verb for of laminate:
verb (used without object)
So yes, the WILL splits opposing lineman into thin layers.
Also will keep linemen from ripping when three-hole punched. Less applicable to football, but handy nonetheless.
Isn't he a bit big for MIKE?
Do I even want to know what "Dan will hor" means?
Yes, he is. I don't think he'll end up as a MIKE, but I'm just a guy on the internet.
Ferns to WILL?
Ferns was recruited for MIKE, too. He's not a WILL.
Exactly!
Magnus, I would be interested to see your projections for the three LB spots including players already on the team as well as those who have signed LOIs (2013 kids) and those who have verbally committed (2014). Where do you see these guys likely playing among the WILL, MIKE and SAM spots?
Thanks in advance.
But IMO, Ferns is the best of the bunch on the inside, though I still like his upside at SAM better than at MIKE, the difference is pretty small. Winovich is a SAM all the way. I personally like Furbush as a SAM or even WDE than I do MIKE.
That being said, Furbush just had some really good shuttle times at a camp he recently went to. He could have improved his lateral quickness and instincts over the past few months. Right now, he doesn't look like the fleetest of foot in the middle, and I don't really know if he's fast enough sideline-to-sideline to have the upside in the middle. 20 years ago I could easily see him in the middle, but based on his junior film I don't see it yet. I said this elewhere, but one of two things seem evident: 1) he's improved a lot recently to make himself a more viable MIKE candidate; 2) the coaches are going to give him a shot in the middle and see if his recognition and playing quickness can improve with reps, and if not they'll let his future position sort itself out.
IMO, he'll redshirt regardless, despite his size, to get more reps in the middle.
Here's where I think each one fits best, although it may not mesh with what the coaches think:
SAM: Ryan, Gordon, McCray*, Winovich, Furbush
MIKE: Morgan, Jenkins-Stone, Bolden, Ferns
WILL: Ross, Poole, Gedeon
*If McCray's 6'1" like some people say, he probably won't be big enough for SAM. If he's 6'3" or 6'4", I think that's the best spot for him.
I personally like RJS as a WILL more than a MIKE. Leaner lower body would make me a little worried about putting him at MIKE, whereas his lean frame and slashing ability could probably be used more regularly at WILL. But he's also played MIKE most of his life, so his instincts are probably better there, and the two positions are highly similar anyway.
Yeah, he's sort of a tweener for me. I just don't see the athleticism and instincts out of him that I would like to see in a WILL.
Hot damn we have a fun linebacking corp.
Thanks, Magnus. As I suspected, UM is looking a little light at the WILL especially if Poole is unable to continue his playing career as is still being speculated.
Follow up question: If UM were to take a fourth LB in this class (unlikely, I know), who do you think would be a good fit for the WILL spot?
Dwight Williams would be my top choice for linebackers in the class, period.
Gant should be somewhere on that SAM depth chart as well.
Ummm...so I got negged for asking another poster's opinion on depth charts? Really?
I can't tell if someone just hates me or if they hate that I asked for Magnus' opinion. Either way, this board has really gone to Hell.
Magnus has some beef with people, so you're bound to get some driveby negs from people because of that.
Thanks for your responses as well, Coyote. I had forgotten that you are also a football coach. Didn't mean to "diss" you by not addressing my question to you along with Magnus.
I honestly didn't take any offense to it, or even consider the possibility, just figured I'd throw my thoughts into the discussion because I thought I could add something or in case Magnus didn't see it.
Some people around here hate me and neg anything they see with the word "Magnus."
