Big Ten Recruiting Rankings 6-4-13
Michigan's two recent pickups—including, y'know, a universal five-star, NBD—strengthen their position at the top of the Big Ten recruiting rankings. While the teams in the upper half of the conference are still adding commits at an acceptable rate, the bottom of the conference is, well, not.
But, hey, Indiana is on the board! Good for them.
Changes since last rankings:
5-15-13: Wisconsin picks up Billy Hirschfeld.
5-16-13: Northwestern picks up Blake Hance. Rutgers picks up Justin Herron. Wisconsin picks up Ula Tolutau.
5-23-13: Ohio State picks up Dante Booker. Rutgers picks up Kamren Lott.
5-26-13: Michigan picks up Jabrill Peppers.
5-28-13: Northwestern picks up Fred Wyatt.
6-1-13: Michigan picks up Chase Winovich. Penn State picks up Noah Beh.
6-2-13: Maryland picks up David Shaw.
6-3-13: Iowa picks up Omar Truitt.

First...
...yeah, Indiana is here to crash your recruiting party. Watch out, B1G.
Second, there seems to be an issue with updating the 247 Composite rankings, as Indiana is given more points than Purdue but is behind them in the rankings. For the sake of consistency, I'm keeping Indiana down here, but if 247 doesn't correct the rankings the next time around I'll give the Hoosiers a bump. Consider this their punishment for not getting a commit until June.
Indiana's back.
Wow. There is a single 5* recruit committed to the entire conference.
Allow me to make the statistically unsupported assertion that 5*s tend to commit later in the cycle. According to Rivals, only 6 of the 18 have committed.
There are only six 5* recruits committed (Rivals) so far. Two are going to ND (for now, anyway), one to the SEC, and two to the ACC. And Peppers (obvs).
Does anyone think the ACC is going to beat out the SEC (or even the B1G) when this is all said and done?
The Big 12 and Pac 12 have ZERO so far.
EDIT: beaten to the punch...damn it.
I +1'd you anyway.
GO INDIANA
Give those guys credit, they are doing a passable job recruiting. If they can hold attrition to a minimum and develop their guys' potential, they may be able to stay respectable. Don't see any Big Ten titles in the near future, however.
They have a decent star average, but if you look closer they have no OL and only one DL. Their class doesn't look so good if you believe that football is won in the trenches.
It's possible to mitigate shortcomings in the lines, somewhat, which is why even NFL teams have dabbled. On offense, get used to single-back, pass-first shotgun. On defense, base two-gap 3-4. Experienced coaches are no stranger to having to find ways of playing around a subpar line.
Of course, having good lines makes winning much, much, MUCH easier. And the above generally assumes your opponent is either big OR fast; nowadays the problem is that too many players are both.
It's hard to be championship material without good lines, but you can win some.
Yeah, there are ways to get around it, but like you said those things only work well against the average and below teams.
You want to run a 3-4 without rotating your DL often? Cool, we'll run the ball every play and maul your linebackers to the ground. You won't cheat up, because if you do you know Drake Harris is catching a TD from wherever we are on the field.
And honestly, Penn State could bring back Kerry Collins in his prime against our D and I don't think it would matter.
But unless I'm missing something, their overall recruiting strategy looks terrible.
Yeah, given their scholarship limits, how does taking 3 WRs and no offensive or defensive linemen make sense? I think they can only take 15 max at any rate, too. Do they have a bunch of linemen already on the roster?
A quick count shows 12 o-linemen total on the roster, which, given the 65 scholarship limit, is probably about all they can carry (UM has 15 right now), but it shows the troubles they're going to have. A couple o-line injuries and they're suddenly going to be 1 deep.
when a fully sanctioned Penn State can still go 6-3 in the Big Ten each year
For that little girl's sake, I hope that isn't an OSU cooler! Thanks for the update Ace. How sad must it be for Nebraska fans right now?
Nebraska always closes late.
Why is Indiana behind Purdue? They both have 1 committ and Indiana's seems to be higher ranked.
i dont even know why Ace would waste his time with this post. Recruiting stars dont matter.
RCMB'd
I play the drums on my cooler when I'm hammered too. Tailgate Traditions start early.
Well done little girl.
Complaining about the way Ace does these rankings
Rehashing of why Ace does it this way
Something about how I think it should still be the other way
/end thread
That was pretty much what I was getting at. Every time Ace posts this someone complains about
- Notre Dame being in or out of the rankings
- How Ace determines the order
Every single time
Northwestern...RUTGERS?! and a school on either the first or second worst probation in NCAA history are ALL ahead of State?
HALOL!
...that's because they didn't get into the Big XII and they never had the chance to become a legit program.
So yes, they feel the affects, but it's likely because the affects didn't allow them to be a part of the Big XII.
They're suffering from being the Texas school not in the Big XII, schools like Baylor and TCU have clearly surpassed them (national perception wise).
PSU will never have that problem. They're the big school in a state with "2" schools (I say that in the way that Michigan only has "2" schools). They're also in the B1G.
A better comparison would be if what happened at SMU or PSU happened at Rutgers. I'd venture to say the B1G would've never invited them and they'd be stuck with Temple as a main rival as they fell into obscurity.
If the SMU death penalty was given to USC or Ohio...they'd both rebound a lot quicker. Hell, both have had moderately substantial sanctions in the past 5 years and we barely remember.
In the end, if SMU gets into the Big XII after the death penalty, they'd be fine by now. They'd at least be Baylor. I bet they'd be better (annually).
In fact, I think they and SMU have been in the same conference every year until then. While you are probably right that being in a major conference gives PSU protection from falling off the map, there was a lot more to SMU's struggles than not getting an invite to the BIG XII.
...but that doesn't deminish that fact that they've surpassed SMU in the eyes of most in the college football world.
And there were a TON of things that contributed to it (the demise), but the conference support was clearly #1, IMO.
Especially in how the land of college football shifted in the BCS-era. It's clear that you're either IN the BCS or you're not. Very few teams have been able to be on the outside and be successful. I may be wrong, but I think TCU is the only team with major competition (from other state/region schools).
Now we're talking about putting the "squeeze" on even more and going to 48 or 64 teams, and there's REALLY going to be a fight to see "who's in." SMU won't have a shot in hell, in the mid 80's, that would've been unfathomable.
That's what I get for yawning when I click "save."
Why don't we include the Irish anymore? I always thought that we included them since we competed against them. Then again, I guess if you included them, you'd have to include Kentucky...because they're somewhere in the middle of the B1G stealing all of the mid-level Ohio kids from MSU.
To HELL with notre dame
Go Blue!
Appears you answered your own question, doesn't it? (and could even throw in TN and to a lesser degree MO. Pitt and Syracuse.)
...those teams/schools were around when Notre Dame WAS included on the list and they were left off.
Yikes, does Nebraska always recruit late in the cycle? They are the third best program in this conference and they have two recruits.
It's pretty tough to get recruits out to Nebraska. Not a lot of local talent so they really need recruits to use officials to go see it. They are probably one of the teams most hurt by the trend of commiting before you can even take official visits.
Minnesota with a 4 star RB? I call shenanigans. Let's take Jeff Jones.
