He was perfect there.
Looks like Tressel finally got around to "firing" him...
May have won the internet....+1
The best joke I've seen so far (from Twitter and Reddit):
"Gordan Gee is retiring to spend more time with Urban Meyer's family."
always good for a story
Priceless!
Interesting non-I-HATE-OHIO factoid in this announcement:
Both Michigan and Ohio State will be searching for new Presidents at the same time. Wonder if this will play out like the football recruiting battles?
Both institutions will almost certainly hire people who already have respective ties to the university, and I'm not sure any Michigan candidates would have Ohio State ties.
MSC didn't have any U of M ties before being hired as president...or did she?
I can't find any definite links.
I'm speaking more about this upcoming election in particular; every list of candidates I've seen involve almost exclusively people with Michigan ties.
While Michigan and OSU compete on a level playing field in football, no serious academic would ever pick OSU over Michigan--unless he or she was offered lots more money by Ohio, and money was the primary motivator for the decision. This is more like those classic Michigan v. Purdue recruiting battles.
What you are saying is that Michigan wins the recuiting battle unless OSU offers more money?
Terrelle Pryor wants to know how that isn't just like football.
Despite the hatred, it's still a top notch public institution. Maybe my sarcasm meter is off, but you'll be hard pressed to find too many public university gigs outside of UM and Berkley better than them.
In the conference alone, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota are much stronger overall universities.
are you measuring by the size of endowment? i think OSU's is bigger than the institutions you list...
You got me on endowment -- only Minnesota's is bigger than OSUs among that group; they're all pretty close but any three of them combined is less than Michigan's.
But in World University rankings, http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking, it's
UM 20
UW 31
ILL 33
Minn 47
OSU 53
There are, of course other rankings, but they tend to fall out the same. The rankings aren't like star ratings. They take into account not only the general excellence of the universities but also their breadth and depth of study. i.e., the higher ranked tend to be the "bigger" ones, in terms of how many high-ranking departments they have.
In other words, it's great to be a Michigan Wolverine.
In the midwest that's possibly true although Wisconsin is probably rated a cut above them academically. Then they're in a chasing pack with Illinois, Minnesota etc., as above.
Nationally, other than Berkeley which you already mentioned, UCLA, UVa, UNC Chapel Hill and UT Austin would generally be considered to be stronger academically than OSU. Those institutions are typically considered to be U-M's peers among the state flagships.
Illinois is up there with Wisconsin, not far below Michigan for prestige.
I wonder if Tressel will hire him to be the Akron president.
not hires.
He is retiring because his Foot-in-Mouth disease has reached the critical stage.
And somewhere in Ohio, a bowtie maker is weeping softly into his hands. As he sits, alone, the realization starts to set in that his son, young Harold Jr. will no longer be able to make a living by plying his fathers trade. Harold Sr. also realizes that his retirement security has been whisked away, and he'll now be forced into a role of servitude as a Walmart greeter until the day he no longer walks the Earth.
It's a fucking Shakespearian tragedy...
The bow tie maker saw the writing on the wall when Dhani Jones was busting out his bowties. . . Harold Jr. is beginning his apprenticeship in the fall.
And somewhere in Ohio, a bowtie maker is weeping softly into his handsYou're not knocking Dhani Jones's business, are you?
Nope. But Dhani should probably look at diversifying his product line to include men's hosiery, before Plaxico corners the market.
Plaxico will shoot himself in the foot sooner or later.
/had to say it
And this occurred not long after Harold, Jr., who formerly made and had an Ohio degree in sweater vests, had been retrained to make bow ties.
Mine's more eloquent.
Haha... That all happened within the course of a minute. Touche...
If it's any consolation, brevity is the soul of wit.
All right, Hoke vs. Meyer, the ultimate recruiting battle: who's going to snag the consensus 5-star president?
i can't wait for the parade of donors to march from the stadium to his house with their wheel barrels full of cash.
This is a Michigan blog.
from not surprised.
This is obviously backlash from Tat/Tressel-gate.
