OSU's Johnathan Hankins to Leave for NFL (Now With More Comments!)
All Big Ten DT Johnathan Hankins is forgoing his senior year at OSU and entering the draft. Smart move from a guy I won't miss seeing at The Game one little bit next year. I think he'll do well at the next level and sticking around another year would not have raised his stock significantly.
While the earlier post of this got locked down for obvious reasons, it's still board-worthy news. Comment away!

I felt kind of bad about being an a--hole in that previous thread but, I mean, c'mon man! It would have been more genuine to come out and say "I hate Rodriguez so lets fight about it online!" in the title. Anyway, I unpublished that thread and look forward to a good discussion without reference to Rodriguez in this one.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:59 PM ^
Did you delete the book thread too?
December 10th, 2012 at 5:18 PM ^
Yeah, MGoStrictures compelled me to do so since this is technically an "in-season" period. But those book threads are always ones I (and I think most) appreciate during the off-season.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
That makes sense. Just curious, but was the "worst free throw" kept up because it has to do with basketball and that is a sport that Michigan plays?
Sometimes I wish this board had an "OT sub-board" where we could discuss books, music, movies, food, etc.
December 10th, 2012 at 6:25 PM ^
Pro sports are the only off topic exception right now. On topic and gray area topics include: Michigan sports, anything about Big Ten teams or scheduled opponents, the blog itself, University of Michigan non sports topics, NCAA sports in general, and Ann Arbor.
Those all have green lights at the moment, within reason. The "books, music, movies, food, ect." stuff will be fine after football season, but I'm almost definitely going to delete them if they come up now (and don't have a strong on topic connection).
Also, just to cover my bases here, this is how I understand Brian's instructions, profit might have a different answer.
December 10th, 2012 at 7:06 PM ^
December 10th, 2012 at 8:24 PM ^
and when I talked to profit earlier in the day he didn't mention anything.
I sent an email to Brian about an hour ago, I'll post the answer here and in the mod sticky if it's after the bowl. If it's now, I might have to try and have some fun with the first post of off topic season.
December 11th, 2012 at 12:13 PM ^
Hey, there's no need to identify our confusion. We are the authority, dammit. Respect your authoritay!
That said, I just do whatever Brian tells me to do. I don't want to lose this high-paying position. The benefits alone (having people hate you and question all of your actions) are reason enough to ride this one out to retirement age!
December 11th, 2012 at 1:11 PM ^
Does that mean you respect 'my' authoritay?
December 10th, 2012 at 5:51 PM ^
Never feel bad about being an asshole.

OSU has a lot of young talent, but replacing the entire D line is going to be tough for them.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:47 PM ^
I bet someone in Columbus is saying something very similar about our O-line. Going to be some serious battles with much NFL talent along the trenches for both squads going forward.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:53 PM ^
The one big difference is that our interior OL performance was just terrible, while their DL performance, was pretty good. The marginal differences in both of our teams replacing those units is greater for OSU, mostly because I feel like it just couldn't get much worse for us (knock on wood knock on wood knock on wood)
December 10th, 2012 at 7:18 PM ^
Their DL play was very good. Our OL play last year wasn't. We can improve, with higher touted kids replacing last years seniors, and one, maybe two guys coming back.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:56 PM ^
Who is going to replace Hankins?
I just looked at their depth chart on Rivals and it says Adolphus Washington. Somehow he was able to pack on nearly 60 pounds his freshman season.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:01 PM ^
I would think Schutt would. He seems like the NT build. Washington seems more like a 3/5 tech. But I don't really follow Ohio football that close, so who knows.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
I don't know how much stock I should put into a Rivals depth chart, but apparently they have 2 DT, a NT and a DE.
That is what it showed for their one "DT" position.
52 Johnathan Hankins | 6-3, 317, JR |
92 A. Washington | 6-3, 289, FR |
90 Tommy Schutt | 6-2, 305, FR |
December 10th, 2012 at 5:45 PM ^
Just so there is a confirming source, here's the official depth chart as of 11/19, which would actually agree with the Rivals chart, incidentally, although it lists Hankins at 322 lbs in the link below.
http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/osu/graphics/pdf/m-footbl/2012-two-deep.pdf
It is interesting to note that on this one, there is the DT, NT, DE and the hybrid LEO position. With Hankins leaving, assuming the #2 players are next year's starters, it's two sophomores and two juniors up front next year.
December 10th, 2012 at 7:46 PM ^
If Adolphus Washington puts his mind to something, there is no way he can fail. Even if he's giving minimal effort there is no way he can fail.

Basically PEDs.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:13 PM ^
by the time late November rolls around they'll have a season's worth of experience.
December 10th, 2012 at 11:50 PM ^
Not just their starting front 4, but they lose LBs Etienne Sabino, Storm Klien, and Zach Boren, CB Travis Howard, and one or both starting safeties may enter the draft early. They should be fine at corner next year unless Roby bolts too, but look to be very thin at safety if Bryant and/or Barnett leave early, and were thin at LB already this year.

Edit: This was supposed to be in reply to CRex.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:36 PM ^
*Johnathan Hankins. I don't blame you, though, because even the mass media is misspelling it.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:47 PM ^
Thanks - it's funny that even the NFL site's headline had it "misspelled" although the body of the article had it right.
FWIW, when I was a kid you spelled Jonathan without an "h", dagummit. We didn't have extra consonants floating around, and we weren't wasteful with letters. Also, get off my lawn!
December 10th, 2012 at 5:06 PM ^
And, you still spell Johnny with the "o" before the "h." I mean, generally speaking.
December 10th, 2012 at 5:23 PM ^
Of course, there's an obvious exception to the "o" before "h" convention; one well-known to Detroit sports fans. (I'm guessing that individual may have been on your mind when you wrote "generally speaking".) And to correct my earlier grousing, even back when I was a kid we used an "h" to spell Jonathan. But just one!
December 10th, 2012 at 6:57 PM ^
I do as well, which is why I almost always refer to a certain shortstop in speech as "Jay-honnie." Just for fun.
December 10th, 2012 at 4:48 PM ^
Which round will he likely be drafted in?
December 10th, 2012 at 4:51 PM ^
ESPN is predicting first round
"The school confirmed on Monday that the potential first-round pick will forgo his final season of eligibility and make himself available for the NFL draft in April, giving coach Urban Meyer an entire defensive line to rebuild in the offseason after losing the big man in the middle."
December 10th, 2012 at 4:57 PM ^
Most mocks have Hankins being taken in the top 10, and the 2nd DT behind Utah's Star Lotulelei.

ahh must've missed that. This likely wont hurt Ohio all that much considering all the talent they picked up in the last class, and how well they are recruiting on the Dline in this class.

Ohio State's defense could be very mediocre next season. That front 7 is a big question mark.
December 10th, 2012 at 7:56 PM ^
Next big question mark for OSU is if their top CB Roby is going to bolt for the draft as well. If he leaves, being that he was one of the only good things about that secondary, OSU could be hurting.
December 11th, 2012 at 10:27 AM ^
December 10th, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
It will still be tough for them to replace their dline. I'd rather have Hankins and Simon than some highly rated untested sophomores and freshman.
December 10th, 2012 at 7:29 PM ^
Good riddance. Dude had an insane 2nd half against us.
