Rivals: Army Bowl Awards

I thouht Magnuson looked fairly good, especially considering he played out of poistion.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:37 PM ^
He also played all five positions that week so he is definitely going to be a huge asset for our O line.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:42 PM ^
Rivals also places emplasis on tackles as more valuable than guard/center, so there is that factor that played into their consideration because he spent a LOT of time at guard.
But seriously, even if you're 6-6, if you have 6-9 Zach Banner and 6-7 Kyle Murphy on the same line, you're probably moving inside.

Magnuson is an obvious redshirt. His run blocking was average at best. Several times he just drove at the players feet. Maybe he was coached to do that, but it sure looked bad. He has the frame to pack on muscle. He will need to play with more ANGAR

is gonna have to be a 4 year starter, so good to see he has improved just throughout this year. What's the DT rotation looking like next year? Pipkens, BWC...then Ash, Talbott?

I agree that QWash and BWC tend to be the de facto starters, but it would be nice to see Ash play the 1-tech effectively, if not in the capacity of a starter.
If he and Wilkins can develop to the point where they can be effective and spell the starters, that could go a long way in terms of allowing Pipkins to redshirt and develop into a 4-year starter type player.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:40 PM ^
That seems a bit ridiculous given that he had a solid day against the countries best DT's.
I thought if any OL stock should go down it should be Banner, given how many times the speed rushers got around him.
Good for Pipkins though. I thought all of our guys did a great job. If Pipkins is that good being that overweight (330lbs ish) just imagine how good he could be if he got into shape!
January 9th, 2012 at 2:41 PM ^
I can't wait to see how good Pipkins can be with the coaching staff we have on defense.
January 9th, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
This is why you trust the coaches and not just the recruiting sites. Coaches wanted him more than other higher rated recruits such as Schutt and Day.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:45 PM ^
Anyone that could assess "stock down" from a high school exhibition all American bowl is an A-Hole and pisses me off.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:19 PM ^
Isn't it sort of their jobs to do just that? To overanalyze the actions of 16-18 year old high school kids and move them up and down, and write about it. You don't have to pay for a subscription to rivals but there's no use complaining about what they do.
January 9th, 2012 at 9:00 PM ^
Base it more off the practices all week more than they do the game. They watch these players go against each other for several hours a day during the week of practice. I think they actually give a pretty fair assessment of where players stand at this point in time.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:45 PM ^
Maybe you should have a look at the roster.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
but the teaser says Pipkins "topped the list" in two categories. You said one was for raising his stock, but what was the other one?
January 9th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
What about the all-important third category? Best Performance in a Comedy Short by an 18-year old Defensive tackle Wearing a Stetson Hat.
Also, can Mr. Brandon please see to it that Ondre's version of "This is Michigan" is worked into the Jumbotron pre-game hype video?

I LOVE Pipkins and was very impressed with what he showed during the Army game, HOWEVER, I think it would be best if we all tempt down some of our high soaring expectations.
There is a LOT of bad body weight on that kid right now. I would expect he is going to need at least a year or two of serious weight room work to get to the kind of physical shape he needs to dominate at the next level (which I fully expect).
Those transition years could be tough on young guys. He may have to take a step back or two before he could really excel.

"There is a LOT of bad body weight on that kid right now."
I've seen this mentioned twice now in this thread and I'm just curious what you guys are basing this on. I'm just curious because he looked incredibly quick and agile, especially for a guy his size, at the weight he's playing at right now. I mean, he was running plays down across the field on several occasions during that game against some fairly fast players. Like I said, I'm just curious what that comment is based on.

You're not comparing a perennial NFL pro-bowler with an eighteen year-old high school kid, are you?
/s
Ondre would probably tell you he could use to lose a few pounds of fat, or replace it with a few more pounds of muscle. Will he be Mike Martin? Probably not. Could he really use a good, S&C regimen? You betcha.

Yes, I compared one aspect of him to Vince Wilfork. Each individual has a different body makeup and they combine it with a skill set. Saying he has "bad bodyweight" is making a claim without the facts. There are players like Wilfork, and many others, who use that extra body weight along with their athleticism to overpower other players. Part of Wilfork's advantage is that he weighs so much but is still able to move well. How do we know that won't be Ondre's game too?
Maybe he needs to lose weight, maybe he doesn't. We won't know until he faces college players. And as for Terrence Cody, he was a dominant college player.

I'll show you bad weight.

I don't think his football shape is in question. We have a long time until next season starts Lets see what he does in the spring/summer. The kid was beating double teams left and right and has completely dominated in every camp he has attended. Not one person has said anything about his shape ( but i do think he'll get down to 300 before the season starts) or conditioning. I think he'll drop some weight before the season mainly to hep with injury concerns
January 9th, 2012 at 2:52 PM ^
just on his last name alone!
January 9th, 2012 at 2:57 PM ^
I'm rlly hoping pipkins gets to campus in good shape (not 330 lbs) and can be a 4 year starter. His hype reminds me a lot of how excited people were for BWC, fortunately we won't be moving pipkins back and forth on the two lines and will hopefully utilize him the best we can
January 9th, 2012 at 3:41 PM ^
BWC was hyped as a raw talent guy and a large upside ( like Yuri Wright this year) but had to work on his pad level and technique at the next level. Pee -Wee is just being billed as a beast DT who has dominated in every camp and the AA bowl. His weight right now should not be a concern until after summer ball
January 9th, 2012 at 4:51 PM ^
Sam said this morning that he thought Pipkins was north of 330. 330 is a decent weight for him. For those above who are hoping for 300, forget about it. Ain't going to happen, nor is it desired. He's a big boy and his role will be being a big boy.
Assessments are made over the whole week, so just becasue Magnuson looked good in the game may not be the deciding factor. That said, if they're bumping him down because he showed up at his listed weight, well whatever.

From the interview Pipkins did with Biggs & Kalis, it sounded like Magnuson was giving him fits.
January 9th, 2012 at 6:40 PM ^
As good as Pipkins looked, I think he looked *even better* off the field. He had two of the better interview videos I've seen in a long while:
* This is what I think about Ohio ice cream bite and toss
*Hoke impression (perfect walk, and new his exact lines from the press converence!)
This big fella has tons of talent, but he just explodes charisma. He was voted captain of the game by his teammates and it's not surprising. That is the type of player that makes everyone love playing together and makes people happy and feel like a family. He's going to be a huge leader for us - that's how I see his future.
