How closed is today's scrimmage?
How closed is today's scrimmage? Will Hoke (or Borges, or Mattison) give a post-scrimmage presser? There are so many questions:
- The RB . . . will anyone step up as the primary back?
- The DL . . . how is BWC?
- The new scheme (getting rid of the 3-3-5) . . . how is it working?
- The secondary . . . who are corners, safeties, and can they cover?
- The LB corps . . . how is Demens, and who else is stepping up?
- Are any freshmen and sophomores getting signifcant PT? (besides Wile)
- Any clarity on the starters, and the two-deep?
- How is Denard adjusting to a West Coast Offense?
- How is Borges adjusting to Denard?
- How is Denard doing throwing downfield?
- How is the field goal kicking?
I am hoping that some of you were there, and can start to tell us the answers to some of these questions!

You do realize the coaches’ staff has to leave the element of surprise for the first game. The coaches can't come out with all the information now for the first few games so WMU and ND and straight prepare with all the information in front of them. They probably know more then they are leading on!!!

yeah, tricking Western is hard to do.

Obviously, you don't want to reveal trick plays . . . things like Denard & Devin both on the field at the same time, etc.
But some of the other personnel stuff is going to have to come out, and it isn't going to change a whole lot for Western to know who the starters will be.

Is? Was might be a better word. Post-scrimmage interviews already posted on MGoBoard.

If you click on the link in the OP, you'll see that those interviews were conducted after practice on Thursday, not after the scrimmage today.

And happily, as now I can look forward to post-scrimmage interviews later today!

If you have managed to catch any of the practice videos out there, I think you'll see Denard has added a VERY VERY VERY nice arc to his throws. Those few throws that they have shown look very beautiful. I would love to catch a Denard deep throw like that any day (if only I was more athletic/dominant in high school...). Last year they were all lasers of varying distance and those are not very easy at all to catch and any vertical route almost required either a catch under the shoulder or a leaping dive if it was over the shoulder. I think Denard will adjust very very very well to a passing scheme as he has shown that one summer is enough to take himself essentially from a RB for a wildcat formation to a legitimate QB. Who knows how well adjusted he'll be at the start of the fall!
Also, Borges will know how to employ Denard to his full capabilities as I'm sure you've heard countless times. What I'm thinking of is QB under center in either Empty, Ace 2/3/4 wide, or Split 2 wide with occasional I-form. Don't forget lots of shotgun looks too as borges has shown at SDSU.

but they gotta quit switching the time

They let Brian into the scrimmage last year, but I'm not sure how the coaching change will affect that policy this year. I'm sure information will slowly trickle out this weekend regardless.

I'm kinda feeling slighted by the new staff. First no BBQ invite, now this.

- The RB . . . will anyone step up as the primary back? We hope so.
- The DL . . . how is BWC? He's working hard and competing. He has to play with great technique on every play. He has to be more consistent.
- The new scheme (getting rid of the 3-3-5) . . . how is it working? Well, ya know, the guys are putting in the work and getting better every day. Are we where we want to be? No, but I'm a defensive guy and have high expectations. I will say it's a good thing we have 2 more weeks of practice.
- The secondary . . . who are corners, safeties, and can they cover? We'll know after the 1st game. They have to have to play with more physicallness. Is that a word?
- The LB corps . . . how is Demens, and who else is stepping up? Demens is working hard and competing.
- Are any freshmen and sophomores getting signifcant PT? (besides Wile) Well, ya know, the fresman are just trying to stay above water. As far as sophomores stepping up, they're working hard and competing.
- Any clarity on the starters, and the two-deep? Hopefully we'll know soon.
- How is Denard adjusting to a West Coast Offense? This offense is similar to the one Denard ran in High School. He's doing a good job but still needs to improve. Devin is giving him some good competition.
- How is Borges adjusting to Denard? Well, ya know, Al has coached a lot of QB's and has run about every type of offense. He's a great coach and won't have a problem adjusting to Denard.
- How is Denard doing throwing downfield? He's doing ok, but ya know, he has some room to improve.
- How is the field goal kicking? Well, ya know, the guys are competing. We probably won't know who's going to start until the day before the game.

Thanks for joining the blog coach!
Seriously though, that is probably what Brady Hoke would say.

You could save Brian mileage costs to the press conferences, because you wouldn't even have to attend.

Kinda like Mitch Albom...

The RB? Think NFL style 60/40, 65/35 split, at first anyways.
The competition is between hopkins and fitz, currently.

Always good to hear a word from you.
