OT- Your Favorite Teams, All Sports, In Order

Submitted by Subrosa on
OK. Here's where you post your favorite teams in any sport in any level of professionalism, in order of the most important to you. One rule: No Ties. They must be broken somehow. For me, as you'll see, I break the ties by answering the question "Which team would I rather see win a championship?" This may be useful to you or it may not. Regardless, figure out a way to break them or don't post here. Without further ado: ______________________________________________ #1) San Francisco Giants- As much as I love college football, baseball has a way of floating with the ebb and flow of one's day-to-day life that no other sport can match. I was born in Detroit, but grew up in the Bay Area, and in that time grew to become the staunchest of staunch fans of the Black-and-Orange. As much as the Colorado hail Mary, or The Game 2006 or App State hurts, nothing will ever top the sheer skin-peeling agonizing pain of the 2002 World Series, Game Six, and Dusty goddamned Baker giving the (WAY TOO EFFING EARLY) hook to Russ Ortiz. Drives me crazy just to think about it. We were Six outs away. Six. #2) University of Michigan Football- Never went there, but most of my extended family did and that's the team I grew up cheering for with my old man every Saturday, in person or on TV. It's the only team I schedule my life around, and the only reason I don't have this entry as #1 is because of misters Woodson, Griese and the rest of the 1997 team that delivered the sweet, sweet goods. Alumni or not, show me the Big House and have the band play The Victors and I'm teary-eyed as hell, I guarantee it. #3) Detroit Red Wings- Stevie Yzerman. My favorite all-time athlete, bar none. I've never cried as hard for a sports team as I did for the 1997 Wings. The Wings are obviously the most rewarding team I've had to root for over the years. Thankfully. Everyone needs one team that wins all the time. #4) Detroit Lions- Other than the Giants, they're the only team on this list who I haven't seen tasting championship glory. Most likely, they'll be the last to taste it again. But they're also MY pro team, through thick or thin (i.e. through thin). Like the Giants, they get the nod over the next team because I've never seen them win it all. Which leads me to the... #5) San Francisco 49ers- Growing up a Lions fan in the Bay Area in the 80's meant one thing: finding another team to pull for once the playoffs rolled around. And oh did the Niners deliver. Montana. Lott. Rice. Young... endless glory. #6) Detroit Tigers- My first team. Some of my earliest memories involve the '84 Series, Alan Trammel, Kirk Gibson and Tiger Stadium. Bless You Boys, indeed. #7) University of Michigan (Mens) Basketball- The first college basketball game I ever watched was the Final Four game vs. Illinois in '89. I still have a completely destroyed Glen Rice replica t-shirt around here somewhere. I admit that they probably wouldn't have been this high except for Coach Beilein, Manny and the rest of the boys on this year's team. #8) Detroit Pistons- The first pro basketball game I ever remember watching was the "And there's a steal by Bird!" game. Broke my little 10 year old heart. I've been a fan ever since, though basketball definitely takes a back seat to the other major team sports for me. Still, the 1989 and 2004 titles vs. the Lakers easily rank among the greatest sports moments of my life. If nothing else because: Screw the Lakers. #9) University of Michigan Hockey- I'm a new fan (if at all) mainly due to the coverage here. However, I can't wait to check out my first game at Yost. I'll just have to get a tutorial on all the chants that the kids do beforehand. And you, MGoCitizens? What are your squads?

And thanks for that... 1) Michigan Football. Besides the reasons given already, it's the one team where if they don't win it all, they can still win the Rose Bowl and call it a hugely successful season. If they don't win the Rose Bowl but still go, you still (usually) won the Big Ten and went to the Rose Bowl. Did I mention Rose Bowl? 2) Michigan Hockey. If their season ends with a loss I first wanna empty out every French word in my vocabulary, directed at the referees and their lineage. Then for a week or so I crawl into a dank 3x5 cell in my own mind, positive that Red won't wanna come back to coach and every 1st and 2nd liner will turn pro and we'll never get to the tournament again. The only team that comes close to giving that kind of torment after losing is... 3) Detroit Red Wings. QED. After that it's: 4) Michigan Softball 5) Team USA Soccer 6) Cincinnati Bengals 7) Cincinnati Reds 8) Univ. of Dayton Basketball 9) Detroit Lions (man I hate the NFL) 10) Michigan Lacrosse (WHOOP!)

1. Michigan football. Dad took me to my first game when I was 4 months old. Spilled pop all over me and I've loved it ever since. 2. Chicago Bears Loved them with Sweetness, McMahon, and Fridge. Then really loved them when they drafted my favorite player Harbaugh. 3. Detroit Tigers Great memories of going up to the old Tiger Stadium as a kid and also listening to Ernie Harwell calling games on WJR. 4. Toledo MudHens 5/3 Field is a great place to see a game. It's a lot easier to get to than Comerica and way more wallet friendly. Plus you get to see future Tigers. It was really cool to see Granderson, Zumaya, and several others before they got called up. Plus they've won a couple Championships lately.

1) Michigan Basketball 2) Michigan Football Pretty self-explanatory here. 3) Lyoto Machida 4) Anderson Silva Anyone who thinks that UFC fights consist of low-skill meatheads bloodying eachother up should watch both of these guys. Their skill level is amazing. 5) Every team in the AL East who's not the Yankees 6) Any team playing Duke Most of my heart is filled with hate. 7) Tigers Grew up without much of a baseball allegiance, but I've enjoyed watching them over the past few years. I'm also a huge NBA fan, but my emotional ties there tend to exist on the individual level.

1)Michigan Wolverines - Grew up watching them every weekend. 2)Minnesota Vikings - Great Grandpa was a Vikings fan, parents were Packer fans. I had to go against my parents. 3)Philadelphia Flyers - Started getting into hockey when Roman Cechmanek was their goalie. I always loved how insane he was. 4)Atlanta Braves - My tee ball team was called the Braves, so for a five year old, it made sense to like them. 5)Philadelphia 76ers - Don't really care about basketball, but Allen Iverson was my favorite player back in the day.

Other teams just don't compare to UM football or basketball - it doesn't seem informative to rank a team near another if the two aren't even close.

1)Michigan football 2)Chelsea High School football -- that might sound a little odd, but I spend a lot of time photographing CHS football each season, so I've gotten pretty attached to it. The accessibility of the team relative to major-college and professional sports makes it more fun: they don't have to be uptight and controlling when it comes to access like big-time college and pro teams have to be. And the atmosphere of a Friday night in the fall is among my favorites. 3)Detroit Lions, painful as it may be. In true Lions fan fashion, though, I hold out hope that they may win SOMETHING in my lifetime. Even just one more playoff victory would be nice. Please? 4)Detroit in the playoffs -- I love sports in general, but I find I don't have the stamina to closely follow the millions of regular-season games in basketball, hockey and (especially) baseball. But when it comes to the playoffs, when every game is important, I'll pay much closer attention. That might sound a little bandwagony, but I just can't maintain the intensity of really caring about the games for 80+ or 160+ games with multiple games a week like I can for 12 or 16 games with only one game a week. I should note that I do love hockey, so I pay a little more attention to the Wings' regular season, and I pay a LOT more attention to the Wings in the playoffs. 5)Michigan hockey -- I do love hockey, but the paucity of collegiate hockey coverage makes it a harder sport to follow (especially since I don't have cable tv). I'd go to more games, but neither my finances nor my schedule allow for it: I often have something to photograph when Michigan hockey is playing. 6)Michigan basketball -- again, I don't get to follow it as much as I'd like. But as a Michigan fan, I was overjoyed when I watched the tournament selection show and saw Michigan appear on the screen. The video of the reaction in Crisler gives me goosebumps. After the gloomy Ellerbe/Amaker years, it's so much fun to see some hope returning to M basketball. I also want to say that lacrosse is a LOT of fun to watch. CHS started a lacrosse program a couple years ago, and when I photographed my first lacrosse matches this spring, it quickly became one of my favorite sports. But lax at any level gets less coverage than collegiate hockey, so pretty much all I see is high school lax.

1. Detroit Tigers-first sport I started watching back in 1995. Not even close. Nothing matches baseball for me. 2. Michigan Football-Passion, history, college sports... 3. Detroit Red Wings-Yzerman was my idol growing up 4. Richmond (MI) HS Wrestling-I may be the first to actually put my high school love on here. I'll be coaching as an assistant next year and we're looking for our 4th state championship in 10 years. Go Blue Devils! EDIT: and as i was writing this, two others wrote lists including high school teams. FML for trying to be original! 5. Detroit Pistons 6. Detroit Lions NOTE: This is where my true passion stops. The rest are teams I'm just highly interested in but don't kill myself over. 7. CMU Football 8. CMU Wrestling 9. Minnesota Wrestling-my best friend is in and out of their lineup. This team will only be on the list for as long as he's there, however. 10. Michigan Wrestling 11. Any other Richmond, CMU, or UM sport. I'll be interested, but I don't care enough to be upset over losses.

1. Michigan football: Duh... 2. Green Bay Packers: Grew up in Green Bay, enough said. 3. Wisconsin Basketball: I am a huge Bo Ryan fan and love the style they play. 4. Michigan Basketball: I loved the Fab 5 (who didn't) and really like what they got going on now. 5. Milwaukee Brewers: One of the best offenses in the league with great young players like Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. 6. Wisconsin Football: This is a tough one...I want to like them because I am from Wisconsin but its hard since all my friends give me crap about Michigan losing, part of my wants them to lose so I have something to say back to them. Still, gotta support the home team. 7. Any team Ray Allen is on: I loved him at UConn and then when he was on my hometown Bucks. He Got Game is an awesome movie as well. Best 3 point shooter of all time with the smoothest stroke I have ever seen. 8. Any team playing Ohio State: I don't understand the whole "you should cheer for the Big Ten" argument. I hate Ohio State and want them to lose every game they ever play. 9. Arizona Cardinals: Live in AZ and half their team is Michigan players so it works. 10. Erin Andrews: Any game she is doing, I'm watching and cheering for one of the teams...

1) Michigan Football- Nothing else comes close. The only sport I really spend time thinking about during the off season. The rest are far less important. 2) Detroit Red Wings- The only sport that my future wife enjoys is hockey. Luckily we share the same team. 3) San Francisco 49ers- Ronnie Lott was my favorite football player as a kid. It was hard not to like them as a kid because they were so good. 4) Detroit Lions- They have sucked forever but watch them every Sunday and usually make it out to a game sometime during the season. 5) Michigan Hockey and Michigan Basketball- Although I go to far more hockey games I like both these teams about the same. I have seen both teams win championships. 6) Bob Baffert racing stables- Although it is not really a team sport I had to put thoroughbred racing on my list one way or another. I usually bet on his horses during the triple crown/breeders cup. 7) Any NFL team that has a former UM player in a prominent role. 8) New Orleans Hornets- I liked basketball a lot when I was younger. They became my favorite team after they (Charlotte) drafted Grandmama. 9) St. Louis Cardinals- Not really into baseball. When I was young I liked Ozzie Smith and have been a fan since. I wanted them to beat the Tigers so I guess they are my favorite baseball team. 10) Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers- The other two Detroit teams. More of a fair weather fan with these guys. I like them when they are good but pay little attention to them when they aren't.

1. Michigan Football - born and raised (father alumni) and two degrees from UM = lifelong diehard 2a. Lions - Yes they are awful, but I still believe every year will be the year 2b. Red Wings - lifelong hockey player and fan. I remember going to see the "Dead Wings" as a child (mid to late 80s) 3. Tigers - My second favorite team to see in person 4. Pistons 5. UM Hoops 6. Navy football - attended the academy for two years; no sporting event's atmosphere is better than the Army / Navy football game

1) Detroit Red Wings- Yzerman, Shannahan, Federov, Lidstrom, Draper, Maltby, McCarty, Osgood, Vernon...the list goes on. 2) UofM Football- Honestly, football isn't a big thing where I live. College football is even less of a big deal, but I love watching it. I've been hooked since the Notre Dame game in '06. 3) Detroit Lions- Someday we'll be good, someday... 4) UofM Bball- Once again, just started getting into UofM hoops a few years ago. 5) Toronto Raptors- VC was so much fun to watch back in the day. 6) Detroit Pistons- Would be ranked higher if they didn't get rid of Billups. I understand the trade though, and I'm sure Dumars will build another championship-caliber team in the next season or two. 7) Italian National Soccer team- World Cup in 2006 was unbelievable. Huge dissappointment yesterday though. 8) Toronto Blue Jays- Roy Halladay is arguably the best starting pitcher this decade. They have some really nice young guys this year, but they'll probably never compete with Bosox/Yanks.

The NFL is too predictable, and the NBA is just boring now. In general, I don't cheer for any pro team with horrible management. I've never been a Lions or Pistons fan, and the Randy Smith edition of the Tigers was beyond horrible. Michigan basketball didn't even seem to be trying with Amaker, as he really didn't do much coaching. I'm sure people will tell me this makes me a bad fan, but I can't support a team that isn't bothering to try. For example, Lions fans? What the hell are you doing? If you want a better team, STOP GOING TO THE GAMES AND GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY.

1. Michigan basketball The first college bball game I remember watching was UM's loss to UCLA in the 2nd round of the 1998 tourney. So until this year, I had never witnessed UM win a tourney game. Never the less, I stuck with the team growing up and became a huge fan. If you think watching a Tommy Amaker offense is painful when you're an adult, try watching it when you're 14. However, UM's recent basketball futility made this past basketball season even more meaningful and the most fun I've ever had following a team. 2. Michigan football A very close second. For all those bumming about the 3-9 season, let me tell you from personal experience watching UM bball, this past season will make the wins in the future a lot more fun. 3. Hometown pro sports teams
