FORMATION NOTES: In general Bama was so multiple that I had a hard time deciphering whether something was a 4-3 with a standup end or a 3-4 with a SAM; they would go with a 5-1, they would shift constantly. Surely the thickest playbooks in college football went head to head in this game.
I called this weird thing 30 nickel slide SAM:
You've got your line shifted to the run strength, you've got a standup end in a SAM spot, and you've got your LBs shifted to run strength. This is Bama's "please run at Justin Eboigbe" formation.
SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Johnson, Wilson, Barner, and Loveland all got at least two-thirds of Michigan's snaps. Corum wasn't far behind. Morris, Edwards, Morgan, and Bredeson had 10-20; Mullings and Orji had cameos.
[After the JUMP: retired that so and so]
This qualifies as expected news:
Michigan is expected to name Kirk Campbell as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell @247sports.

Campbell was Michigan’s QB coach in 2023 and helped JJ McCarthy emerge as a potential first-round pick. Was also interim OC for the team’s win over ECU.https://t.co/dJORJ80Uo5 pic.twitter.com/bnWWEChmBj
My reaction to this is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Campbell's quick ascent from analyst to QB coach to OC is either a sign he's really that dude or sort of a mediocre default hire, and nobody knows which one it is. Two weeks ago people were muttering about Zachary Orr maybe not having enough experience to be the DC at Michigan and now he's the Ravens' DC. Meanwhile it's difficult to evaluate his impact in a single year as a QB coach. Yes, JJ McCarthy was pretty good. He was going to be pretty good no matter who Michigan had at QB coach.
[After THE JUMP: more coachbits]
Michigan's got a few 2025 commits that have yet to receive Hellos and today we start with the most star-studded one, 4* QB Carter Smith. Lost in all the fanfare surrounding Michigan's failed pursuit of mega QB prospect Bryce Underwood is the fact that the Wolverines already picked up a commitment from a pretty highly regarded QB in Smith, who joined the '25 class in November. Today we will get to know a potential QB Of The Future.

Smith is a legitimate 4* to three of the four services and is either top 100 or borderline top 100 to Rivals and On3. The Rivals ranking is rather remarkable, Smith being bumped up from unranked to top 60 nationally in one national rankings update. The negative site on Smith is 247, pegging Smith as a 3* presently, but even that ranking is damn close to being a 4*. Based on Seth's 5 star scale, it is exactly one, 4.00. The consensus rankings thus have Smith a good bit higher, with the 247 Composite bordering on 4.5* status. Based on Seth's database, Smith is 17th out of 43 QBs that Michigan has recruited since 1990 in terms of rankings. Not too bad!
[AFTER THE JUMP: do you remember JJ McCarthy?]
a solid QB to land on a Tuesday
It's what else they could have done that tells you how much they like what he can do.
coaching turnover is minor but spicy this year
