Players using Cartier 'Buffs' Sunglasses as Motivational Prize for Creating Turnovers
Saw DJ Turner wearing the sunglasses after his interception Saturday. I wasn't aware the players were using them as motivation.
Apparently, it was Will Johnson's idea and he secured them from Zeidman's Jewelry. They player gets to wear them after each turnover and the player with the most turnovers at the end of the season keeps them as a trophy.
Hope we are seeing a lot more of these shades in the upcoming games!!!

This is dumb. Not the post. The concept of “turnover glasses”.
September 27th, 2022 at 11:58 PM ^
Why? If they are having fun with it and it creates some excitement, what's the problem?
September 28th, 2022 at 12:02 AM ^
I made my son give these back after he received them as a gift this spring. But not before reading old news stories of the kids who were killed for them. One of them a short walk from where we lived at the time of the murder.
September 28th, 2022 at 6:31 AM ^
So a kid gets killed in a robbery and the takeaway is luxury sunglasses are bad? I’m not sure if this is exactly what your implying or you’re just giving a related anecdote but the position of your reply seems strange. If these are donated from a jeweler what’s the issue?
I would probably take away that it’s not wise to flash luxury items in places where there are people desperate for money. I think Michigan Stadium is probably fine.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:28 AM ^
Yeah, there's an interesting history of violence associated with these glasses in Detroit, in particular: LINK
September 28th, 2022 at 8:57 AM ^
I don't wanna speak for this guy, but I think he is just relying his personal experience with his son and these glasses. Yes people get robbed for these, and he had no idea itt was a thing. People get shot and killed over Jordans and other inanimate objects eveyday unfortunately
September 28th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
The idea that these things only occur because people are “desperate for money” has to come from someone who knows nothing about crime and criminals. Those who commit armed robberies do it because they enjoy it.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:25 PM ^
This has all gotten way too serious.
These sunglasses are freaking awesome and I think this idea by the team is hilarious and can't wait to see our guys wearing them all year.
September 28th, 2022 at 4:50 PM ^
Bro, why do you think crime like this spikes in poor economic / high unemployment times / areas? Sure, some people are just addicted kleptomaniacs but for most, it's out of economic desperation.
September 28th, 2022 at 5:58 PM ^
I’ve spent almost all of my adult life dealing with crime and criminals. How about you? Just about everyone who sticks a gun in someone’s face and robs them does it for the rush they get from the feeling of power and dominance over their victim. Sure, they’re also looking for easy money, but that’s not the primary motivator for most. If you’re willing to be a criminal, they are other ways to make money.
September 28th, 2022 at 4:19 PM ^
The point is it’s an unnecessary risk. And it was a gift from an extended family member.
September 28th, 2022 at 5:18 PM ^
Damn, extended family giving a kid three thousand dollar sunglasses seems like a real friendly extended family. Do you think they would consider adopting me?
September 27th, 2022 at 11:59 PM ^
I think it would be funny if offense had their own version, except they had to wear a clown nose, glasses/big nose/mustache disguise, or a dunce hat when they had a turnover.
September 28th, 2022 at 1:17 AM ^
They also get to have a "special" chair right next to Mike Hart.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:52 AM ^
Poor CJ... But it sure would promote ball security!
September 28th, 2022 at 10:41 AM ^
I think the embarrassment of being immediately pulled coupled with the shame of ruining an offensive possession for your entire team would suffice. Especially if that possession contributed to a stunning loss. I know it would for me.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:39 AM ^
I was at a YMCA camp where the cabin captain had to wear a golden toilet seat around their neck if their cabin was the messiest at inspection time. Would be appropriate for an offensive player if they crap on the team with a turnover.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:13 AM ^
Turnover glasses do seem kind of …….. eh, dull.
The more exotic the better - I don’t have a great suggestion (a turnover samurai sword?), but we need more things in the spirit of chainsaws and slot machines.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:55 AM ^
I guess they could always do what wild wolverines do and go with a goat head...
September 28th, 2022 at 5:18 AM ^
You prefer the big fake gold chain?
September 28th, 2022 at 8:35 AM ^
I hated the Miami turnover chain. I'm old, yeah, but naming that gaudy piece of bling the trophy for having achieved something -- not a good look. Aspiring to a classy luxury good - less bad?
September 28th, 2022 at 9:01 AM ^
I think kids see things differently and like another poster said, let football players, who grind and dedicate the majority of their youth to this sport, enjoy it anyway they find fun. At the end of the day its a brutal sport that will take a toll on their bodies, so let them do whatever it is that makes it more enjoyable.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
Ostentatious display of luxury goods is never classy.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:55 AM ^
Would that extend to Louis Vuitton cleats?
Asking for an enemy.
September 28th, 2022 at 7:45 AM ^
are you an 18 - 22 year old? Maybe your motivations are different?
September 28th, 2022 at 4:55 PM ^
Eh, turnover chains are just as dull (and overplayed). Also cliche is the belt. But the obvious reason for this is NIL. Nice sponsorship opportunity to the provider of the glasses (they've gotten good pub) and the winner gets $3500 sunglasses. So everyone kind of wins. But who wants a turnover belt at the end of the year? Not a lot of value.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:19 AM ^
Yup. From the picture it looks like no one on the team is really into it ...

It's dumb that yours is the first comment on something these young men obviously enjoy. They are the ones putting in the hard work so you can sit on your comfy ass and bitch.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:47 AM ^
He gets to earn all the negs though as the first comment, so it balances out.

Adding Detroit culture to a college football trend sounds like a great idea to me
September 28th, 2022 at 5:17 AM ^
I'm sorry I was on your lawn last week sir, I was just getting my ball.
September 28th, 2022 at 7:43 AM ^
Then I guess it’s a good thing that this isn’t targeted at middle aged blog readers?
It wouldn’t be a huge motivator for me personally, but if the kids love it (and it has a Michigan/Detroit connection), what’s the harm?
September 28th, 2022 at 8:52 AM ^
As a middle-aged+ fan, I believe the prize for securing a turnover should be -- as Monty Python would say-- "a hearty handclasp" from the coach.
September 28th, 2022 at 11:51 AM ^
"hearty handshake" is a blazing saddles reference. for shame.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:35 PM ^
"hearty handclasp" is a _The Bank Dick_ with WC Fields reference, which predates Blazing Saddles by about 35 years.
September 28th, 2022 at 1:05 PM ^
no. way. i've never heard that!
now I'M ashamed!
September 28th, 2022 at 8:57 AM ^
This is not even close to being as bad as the "turnover chain" that Miami players used to wear after a turnover. At least these are very low key by comparison. If this gets the defense motivated to make plays and create turnovers I am all for it. Let these guys have a little fun, since it does not hurt anyone at all.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:59 AM ^
i'm calling your boss and asking her to rescind your annual performance bonus.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:45 AM ^
This is one of your Oh No! Moments I guess. Kids are having fun. Let them do what they want. Why pass judgement on simple things?
September 28th, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
You must be a blast a parties...
September 28th, 2022 at 11:50 AM ^
this is dumb. not the OP. the response.
i'm as big a curmudgeon as i know but come on. this is some harmless, and i must point out, player-initiated silliness. relax and let the kids play.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:21 AM ^
Can we get a motivational prize for creating some pass rush up in here?
September 28th, 2022 at 1:10 AM ^
Maybe a trophy like the Heisman, except it has a sculpture of this on top.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:57 AM ^
This pic is every bit as good and comforting as the Jessica Alba bedroom gif - albeit in a slightly different way. It will get an upvote anywhere, anytime, for any reason posted - relevant to the thread, or not.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
I have a running bet of a six pack, etc with one of our Group Sales VPs on the PSU game - last years bet I decided that this would be a great reminder, so I had the picture laminated to his desk between his phone and monitor - just so he could get a visual reminder every time he was in the office.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:30 AM ^
eh, my Maui Jims are just fine at one tenth the price. 😁 Plus, I get to subsidize one of the most hideous examples of corporate sponsorship ever, the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
This feels much more Michigan than the various other trinkets that have popped up around college football. As long as they're not neglecting their basic responsibilities in the hopes of generating a low-probability turnover, I don't see an issue with it. Here's hoping those sunglasses get passed around more than....
... the collection plate at church. Why, what did you think I was going to say? 😇
September 28th, 2022 at 9:58 AM ^
"As long as they're not neglecting their basic responsibilities in the hopes of generating a low-probability turnover..."
Perhaps this is why RJ finally held on?
September 28th, 2022 at 12:55 AM ^
Cartier's are definitely a D thang. I'm all for it if kids are having fun and who knows maybe it helps us recruit Detroit with a little local twist.
