He's all yours, Columbus!

He's all yours, Columbus!

So what does this accomplish…

So what does this accomplish, if you're one of these Spartan guys?  Do you think he's going to come back to MSU now that you've trashed him publicly?

NIL under Harbaugh…

NIL under Harbaugh functioned enough to keep a bunch of guys from going pro in 2023, so I'm not convinced there were any bridges burned.  I think Michigan has just been gradually figuring things out over the past three years.

As for Juwan, though, I do wonder if the Wisconsin slap turned some people off.

It seems that before they…

It seems that before they hired Woody Hayes, OSU was ... normal?

I guess having a psychopath coach your team for nearly three decades leaves its mark.

You do realize that it’s…

You do realize that it’s just television rights revenue that’s shared among Big Ten schools?  We don’t give the others a cut of our stadium revenue.  Northwestern and Rutgers do not, in fact, have the same amount of football revenue as us.

Joining a superconference made up of only other powerhouses would weaken our competitive advantage, not strengthen it.  I'm suprised how this point is lost on so many.

The mere fact that we had a…

The mere fact that we had a basketball presser in the month of May is a refreshing change.

By definition, isn’t what…

By definition, isn’t whatever the NFL runs “pro-style”?

I think coaching plays a…

I think coaching plays a major role in OL development.  Hoke recruited pretty well in the trenches iirc, but it didn’t show on the field.  Harbaugh’s first few OL didn’t pan out so much either.  It was when Moore got the OL gig that things fell into place.

This is peak Michigan fandom…

This is peak Michigan fandom right here.  There’s nothing to complain about from the last three seasons, so you went on a deep dive and found something to rant about from 2017.

Well done!

What’s the point of doing…

What’s the point of doing this if you’re St Mary’s?  You think the kid is going to be fired up to play for them now?  There’s no upside to being a dick when a guy wants to leave.

How do you bind a college…

How do you bind a college student to a school?  Even if you ruled that the players are employees, they’re also college students.  That doesn’t stop being the case.  From a legal standpoint it’s absurd that a student couldn’t be allowed to transfer.

It’s a shame, because the…

It’s a shame, because the Big Ten refs in Columbus screwed over one of the best defenses in the country.

FIFY

I didn’t think I’d say this,…

I didn’t think I’d say this, but I miss David Stern.  He understood that there was value in brand identity and only let teams have one alternate uniform.  He also refused to budge on jersey ads.

Adam Silver just seems to look to make a quick buck wherever possible.  It’s OK to tell Nike “No” sometimes.

I’m sorry, but that is not a…

I’m sorry, but that is not a Major League Baseball uniform.

I’ve come to expect this nonsense from the NBA but thought MLB had a little more fashion sense.

Somehow I doubt the “Pure…

Pretty lame cover story by the state.
Somehow I doubt the “Pure Michigan” campaign was around in 1963.  Also: 2024 is not, in fact, the 60th anniversary of 1963.

And their glory days were…

And their glory days were built on running the option and using lots of steroids.

What was this sick burn?

What was this sick burn?

Love Jalen, but he's not…

Love Jalen, but he's not really a PG on defense.  Burke is.

A lot of curious choices. …

A lot of curious choices.  Rice, Rudy T and Burke as backups?  (Plus, I don't think Rice ever played SG?)

anyone who takes JUB's…

anyone who takes JUB's classes knows his policy is "if the paper is due at noon and you try to give it to me at 12:01 then it's a zero".

Having worked in education, I hate when other teachers/professors do this.  It's BS, acting like the entire world revolves around your class.  The most important thing is not that the kid meets some arbitrary deadline, but that they show they learned the material.  You should never have a penalty so severe that it discourages the kid from doing the assignment altogether.

At issue here, I think, is…

At issue here, I think, is not about whether they have the legal right or not to protest (they do) but whether it makes sense to act during a graduation.  There can be a point at which protesting can be counterproductive.  Their beef, ostensibly, is with the U-M Regents, not the public at large, but by disrupting a graduation ceremony they may have ended up annoying a lot of other people - people whom they may have hoped would back their cause.

And that's despite the fact…

And that's despite the fact that we demolished most of our opponents, so that JJ barely played a 4th-quarter snap in the first two months of the season.

We weren't as effective, overall, running the ball in 2023 as in the previous two years.  Blake didn't look 100% back until the Rose Bowl and Donovan, the national title game.  JJ had to move the chains with his arm quite a bit on 3rd downs.  He just usually did it for 3 quarters per game instead of 4.

Wow, terrible.  Rough day…

Wow, terrible.  Rough day for the Michigan athletic family.

Wow, I can't believe this. …

Wow, I can't believe this.  He was such a fun player to watch.  Never forget "GTFO my court."

RIP.

Man, if JJ was moonlighting…

Man, if JJ was moonlighting as our DC in addition to being a QB, he's even better than I thought!

With this piss-poor schedule…

With this piss-poor schedule, they'd better go undefeated if they want to call themselves a contender.

Both times, Michigan won 29…

Both times, Michigan won 29-7

That's in the title of the post.

It’s almost like Brian picks…

It’s almost like Brian picks weird scores on purpose.  Shocker!

If you look carefully at…

Look again at those numbers.  They say that the high school population peaked in 2022 and is now decreasing. Prior to then the rate of growth had been flattening out for years.  That doesn’t explain how virtually every elite school has seen a 100-200% increase in applicants over the past 20 years.

What’s more, college enrollment in this country has been decreasing since 2010!    Even before the birth rate started affecting school enrollment, young people were being priced out of college.

Demographics have nothing to do with this.   This is entirely artificial, and it’s bullshit.

Not in the U.S.  Our high…

Not in the U.S.  Our high school population nationwide is basically stagnant right now, and is projected to decrease by 2030 as the birth rate has been very low ever since the Great Recession.  What’s more, college enrollment has been decreasing for a decade now as growing numbers of young people aren’t bothering with it.

At the same time this is happening, lots of flagship public universities have been increasing enrollment.  UM just went from 40K in 2010 to 50K in 2020.  But most of the other universities in the state have been losing enrollment.

The increase in applications is totally artificial, fueled by the Common App.  Young people are getting screwed over and it’s all just because schools like to brag about how selective they are.

Of course 2023 Michigan was…

Of course 2023 Michigan was the last great team.  There haven’t been any national championship teams since.  QED.

That could backfire.  Not…

That could backfire.  Not sure how strong fans’ appetite is to support collective action when the players are now getting NIL and have the right to transfer without penalty, in addition to their scholarships.

College athletics has always been a different beast than the pros.  The less it differentiates itself from the pros, the more the fans are likely to see it as an inferior version of the latter, and potentially tune out.

Juwan inherited a program…

Juwan inherited a program coming off back-to-back 30-win seasons.  In no sense was the program he inherited stale or lacking in talent.

In this era, a major program…

In this era, a major program is never condemned to 8-12 years of rebuilding.  Under May our rebuilding process lasted about two weeks.

When a program that has gone…

When a program that has gone to two national title games in the previous dozen years goes 8-24, fans have a right to check out.

Well the thing is, black isn…

Well the thing is, black isn’t one of their colors.  When you have a 90-year history wearing blue and silver, you should stick with it.

Their traditional look is really good already.  There’s no reason for this besides wanting to sell merchandise.

Do any of them realize that…

Do any of them realize that we played in fifteen games?  That was one half of one game - 1/30 of our season.

Nah.  Looks too much like…

Nah.  Looks too much like the Carolina Panthers’ uniforms.  The fact they have to put “LIONS” on there sums it up.  A good uniform doesn’t need the team name on it, it should be obvious.

Yeah, the Lions better make…

Yeah, the Lions better make the most of their window of opportunity the next 2-3 years.  The Vikes with a seasoned JJ are going to be cooking.

During his time in Ann Arbor…

During his time in Ann Arbor, McCarthy never threw for 3,000  yards

He passed for 2,991 yards last season.  I guess if he’d completed one more 9-yard pass this reporter would be sold?  Good grief.

I read your post in Hank…

I read your post in Hank Hill’s voice.

I don't understand how you…

I don't understand how you could have compared him to Archie Miller.  Miller coached at Dayton, which is consistently a good mid-major program.  Many coaches have succeeded there.  May took over one of the worst programs in the country, with almost no history of success at all before he got there.  And he took them to the Final Four.

Except that at this point,…

Except that at this point, the tide is in our favor.

"Let him play for *ichigan. …

"Let him play for *ichigan.  He's not TOUGH enough to play for Coach Day.  Coach Day is a TOUGH coach who wants TOUGH players to win TOUGH football games.  TOUGH."

Well, he's only had one…

Well, he's only had one other head coaching job, and it was one of the worst jobs in the country when he took it over.

Still, in his first season at FAU he improved them, from 12-19 to 17-16 - and that was before NIL and the portal.

It may be 2024 and the NCAA…

It may be 2024 and the NCAA may be dissolving like a mound of sugar in the rain ... but it's still legal for guys to stay in school and get better over the course of their four years.  Let's applaud him for betting on himself here.

That's the kind of shit I…

That's the kind of shit I don't expect to see anymore.

But I thought "this shit works"?

Seriously, great stuff.

Interesting.  But are they…

Interesting.  But are they going to be relevant?

He’s currently a sophomore…

Wolf is currently a sophomore at Yale.

The difference is that the…

The difference is that the transfers that have committed this year are in the categories that we normally admit (underclassmen and graduates).  If Juwan had just stuck to guys in those categories, he probably wouldn't have had any problems.
