My best friend actually got admitted to U-M, no sweat, but was wait listed at UNC, which was his main target - from what I recall out-of-state admissions at top public schools are almost Ivy League levels of selective.
What's also crazy is how many AP credits the top candidates have now. I had what was considered a hard schedule and took 4-5 AP classes and while it's probably an apples-to-oranges comparison, that'd be amateur hour today.
And it's not just 'elite' schools; obviously lolOSU but the days of just having to be conscious to be admitted there are long over, they're not a public Ivy but they're way more selective now and have been for a while.
