B1G LAX Championship - handshake line question
I’ve been pondering the handshake line after the B1G Lacrosse Championship game last night. For those that are unaware, Michigan scored in the first 6 seconds and had a run of 10 straight goals in their blowout win.
Right after our resounding victory, all the players took off their helmets. Nothing strange about that. It was kinda funny seeing the lawn sale of Michigan helmets scattered about after they were tossed in air. PSU players had their helmets off too, as the camera panned across the team. You could see the disgust in their faces.
However, during the handshake line (awesome tradition btw), the PSU players had their helmets back on - all but one player IIRC. This appeared to be a total Sparty move and reeked of sore losers. Or, is this a PSU tradition?
Thoughts?
I think it’s easier to carry a helmet on your head than to carry both a stick and helmet in one hand while shaking hands with the other hand.
PSU players just want to get off the field ASAP while the Wolverines bask in the glory of a championship won in Columbus.
That makes sense! Get all your gear and high tail it out of there.
I think I found my answer. From mgoja below:
Apparently the losing team members keeping their helmets on is standard protocol for the post game handshake.
Generally, both teams keep their helmets on. the difference is that in the conference championship game, the winning team throws all of their gear and celebrates. While the losing team waits.
PSU was classy in waiting for the several minutes of celebration from the Michigan players (which isn't rude). I'm sure it was emotionally painful for the PSU players to wait for that when they probably just wanted to get to the locker room.
16-4 is an exponential blowout. They might be just trying to protect their brains from exploding.
Losing to M is definitely a PSU tradition
The best psu tradition
Just ask James Franklin :-)
You mean Frames Janklin....
You are overthinking this and it's not PSU being sore losers.
I was thinking about the time Sparty got their helmets on pregame, locked arms, and walked across the football field during Michigan’s practice time. It looked somewhat similar to what I saw last night.
That is...entirely different.
Either way, it's pretty standard to wear your helmet through the handshake line in lacrosse and I'll guess that a majority of the PSU guys had their lids on anyway
You mean this time:
vs. Everybody.
I always thought the championship handshake line tradition was...
What??? No. What could possibly happen anyway, the helmeted players are going to start head-butting everyone?
Seriously - this reads like a "bad winner" post. Give your opponent the benefit of the doubt, they didn't do anything to prove otherwise. Michigan won and has a very good team that will be a tough out in the NCAA.
Fuck psu and all their joepa-loving delusional fans!!!*

Lol, sounds like I died. Just having dinner with my good friend Keith Jackson.
It's in loving memory of all the times you posted this! A lot of times...
Apparently the losing team members keeping their helmets on is standard protocol for the post game handshake.
I noticed this last night and asked my son about it - he’s been playing for about two years and told me that’s how it’s done. However, a quick internet search on my phone has produced absolutely nothing I can share here for more background.
It's to hide the crying. There's no crying in LAX.
Thanks for this! I didn’t know why, and now I do.
Congratulations M-Lax! Sounds like something we all might need the night before :D
I recall the handshake line a few games ago and the Wolverines all had their helmets on. I don’t recall who they were against but the other team all had their helmets off.
I played HS lacrosse 30+ years ago and if you kept your helmet on post game that meant it was about to go down.
As for carrying gear, it was easiest to put everything on your stick-pads, gloves, helmet and throw it over your shoulder.
I need an accounting of who had their gloves on and who took them off.
Probert and Lemieux had their gloves off.
Bob Probert still holds the Red Wings franchise record for penalty minutes in a season at 398. He had the gloves off... a lot.
They shook hands with their helmets on? Oh the horror
You're just giving NittanyFan a chance to come on here and yell at you for being dumb
Legit nothing burger here. Helmets on is often "I am sad". I played college and coached college lacrosse.
