Why Drevno Is a Good OC Hire

Submitted by The Reeve on

Tim Drevno has been reported as a OL hire, but he appears to be our new OC. This, I think, is great news. I had reservations about Roman as OC.

The quotes from 49ers Webzone are not offered as definitive of anything (random fan-rants), but there was a TON about frustration with Roman, and that loyalty to Roman caused part of the rift with management. Just a data point. (Edit - removed tweets referenced by Brian.)

The coach, coached them up to play, and it worked for awhile. The players have seen it all. Here comes a real OC. LET THE WINNER(us) OF SUPER BOWL XLIX HAPPEN IN OUR STADIUM. We have made a lot of history. We will all miss Harbaugh. We will not miss Roman. Fangio stays.
Unfortunately, because I like the guy, he's too damn hard-headed to adapt and navigate the kind of turmoil we experienced this year. He could have fired Roman and proved to the players that he's willing to make moves to make their lives easier. But he stuck with Captain Potato and lost the locker room in doing so. I wish him the best, but he can kindly GTFO immediately if he's already agreed to coach elsewhere.
ten years later when i am gumming doughnuts at the old folks home, i will be saying,, it is still amazing how many games we won in spite of roman and i will still be pissed that the coaches, who are supposed to do what is best for the team, did not allow them to win or at least try to win a perfectly winnable super bowl.. so you think luck would have been able to overcome bad clock management, burning time outs, having to take delay of game penalties? jh/roman bathwater drinkers are either unable or unwilling to admit that stuff is on the coaches and has been since the day they walked into headquarters and those things had nothing to do with whoever is quarterbacking our team

It's a short post; I don't dive into his SD resume or how much the SC people are pissed to lose him. Just making one point: Roman was a polarizing figure in SF, and countless fans loved Harbaugh while hating Roman. Is that scientific? No. But seems that avoiding that sort of question mark makes hiring another qualified candidate instead a "good hire."

The patented, once a quarter play where Griese fakes the run left and hits a wide open Jerame Tuman.

That and the Calvin Bell reverse.

I have the entire 1997 season on DVD.  It's quite nostalgic to throw those games on while working from home and see those plays working time after time after time.

With Keith Jackson and his Dad, Bob Griese, calling the games for ABC. Very nostalgic! The championship year was when I first started playing and watching football as a 10 year old back in West Michigan. Now living in Denver.

I hope Harbaugh can get us back to those days. Cheers!

Roman was good every yar but this year. The people hating him are like the same MSU/Ohio people saying why would you want Harbaugh when he went 8-8 this year ignoring the fact that he went to three NFC championships games, a super bowl, and an orange bowl at Stanford!

As a Niners fan I had little expectations for playoff runs or titles this season, the window was closed. Being bad for so long kept us Niners fan from realizing how small that window is in the NFL now and you don't get to come that close a fourth straight year. So Roman became the scapegoat and the answer every time the question was asked what was wrong with the team. Better answer is the team wasn'tgood in '14. Without Roman it also won't be good in 15. If Roman is Harbaugh's top choice I hope we get him.

I've heard similar things about Roman (my co-worker is a Niners fan). I will reserve judgment on Drev as an OC but it seems like he's a hell of a OL coach. We need one of those. Happy to have him.

Didn't York tell Roman and Harbaugh not to run any more pistol or zone reash type plays this year because he was afraid Kapernick would get hurt after he signed his big contract?

for his offensive line abilities. Not sure what being a run game coordinator entails.  Could definitely see him calling the running plays and Jim calling the passing game.

An OC with Oline exp. is something that should benefit the team immediately. With our Oline being the weakest spot on the team the past couple years I like that he will be able to play call to their strengths and hide their weaknesses. And while he probably doesn't help the QB position much I have a hunch the HC can handle that.

Not going to lie, I'm not crazy about the hire. Would be a great offensive line coach hire, but let's be honest, the guy hasn't called a play as an OC since 2006. The game and defenses are quite a bit different seven years later.

Also, being an OC is complicated. Like anything else, if you don't do it often, you can lose the ability to have a feel for the game. Probably would've preferred Roman since he has NFL experience and been calling plays the last few years

1. Jimmy isnt some barley .500 coach, he's been there and done that in college and the pro's. So I would trust his choice over a few arm chair fans.

2. If Jimmy wants him and trusts him peanut gallery needs to shut mouths unless it in full support of

3. All the mouning and pissing that went on about how we dreamed about Jim comming and now that he is here people want to throw shade on who he wants to coach on his staff for his team? Not cool. I say sit back, shut up, and cheer boys because these Israelites are coming out of the wilderness and into the promise land.

Lol it's been 1 day and people are already complaining about a choice Harbaugh made.  Dear God I would hate to coach for this fanbase.
