Recruit Review 2019 Ep 1 | Gabe Newburg

Submitted by FanNamedOzzy on May 14th, 2019 at 1:13 PM

Hey guys, I'm revamping a series I started last year called "Recruit Review" -- I go through film, scouting, recruitment, and other details of each recruit from the 2019 recruiting class. Episode 1 focuses on Gabe Newburg.

I won't post every single episode here, but lots of people enjoyed my analysis videos during the season last year, so thought I'd share the first episode of this series here, as well! Keep your eyes posted on the channel for more episodes this week and throughout the offseason for more Recruit Review!

As always, feedback and constructive criticism is always welcome!

-1 for not being relentlessly negative because recruit is a 3 star. Must bag on all 3 stars and assume the program is doomed if we are taking 3 stars.  +1 for ghost doors.

OK, here's some *good* news. For those not familiar with Ozzy's work, he did some great analysis of key plays (with video) for several games last year.

Just a few minor notes:

Northmont is in one of the biggest and best public conferences in the state of Ohio.

He was never a backup plan to Harrison for OSU, once he committed to Michigan he shut everything down.  Gabe grew up a Michigan fan and his father is a big UM fan.  OSU did not pursue at all this year, most likely because Newburg had some injury issues.

He is up over 250 now and there are no plans to redshirt.  He is expecting to play this season and not just 4 games.

He comes from a very athletic family and has a younger brother that may be a D1 prospect.

Firstly, thanks for the info. It's definitely helpful.

I read this article, which goes through the details of a visit Newburg had with OSU before committing to Michigan. This quote in particular, from Newburg himself, is telling: “I have a feeling they’re waiting to see what someone else decides before they come after me."

The redshirt projection is just my opinion -- I do not have any sources or anything in the program, just what I think from the film and DE roster, currently. Glad to hear he's 250+, though, that's huge for him to play early.

I definitely think he has enough athleticism to contribute heavily at Michigan, just think it's the one thing about his skillset that may keep his ceiling lower than some. Obviously he's athletic, just not a freak athlete.

You nailed it.  Sorry if my post came across as a critique, it was just meant to add info to your video.

I agree with you about his upside.  I think Harbaugh must have known about some of these guys leaving before hand because he never waivered on allowing Newburg to enroll early when many were wondering why.  He can be a back end of the rotation guy early on due to his technique but doesn’t appear to be a future nfl player.  Hopefully he can become the next Chase Winovich and prove everyone wrong.

Look forward to future videos.

side note, Newburg comes from the same HS as former UM signee Kaleb Ringer.  He transferred out without ever playing.  He had injuries his senior year of HS as well.

No offense taken! Pointing out potentially incorrect information only helps me create better scripts in the future and find ways to be more clear / concise.

And you're right -- it's an interesting choice to let him enroll early. Like you said, his skillset is well-suited to contribute as long as he's physically up for it. Smart guy, too, so he'll be able to learn Don Brown's system quickly (less important as DL, but still).

I don't even know what to say. You're in what I think is your bedroom. Your Mom at least made sure you cleaned it up. Where are your stuffed animals?

This is kinda like getting a tattoo when you're 18. One day you'll turn 40 and go "OMFG why did I ever think that an alligator running with a buckeye in his mouth while wearing a pair of Michigan underpants and wearing a t-shirt that said "Bo Schembechler Rulez" was cool to get painted onto my stomach???
