OT- Shea Patterson/De’Veon Smith now on FS1 in The Spring League

Submitted by uferfan on November 4th, 2020 at 6:11 PM

First I’ve heard of the Spring League- playing in the fall because 2020. Patterson is starting at QB for a team called the Blues. Also, De’veon Smith is playing at RB for their opponents (Aviators). Game is on FS1.

Yeah, I've been watching this. Shea's done some nice things. He's not an NFL QB, but he can make stuff happen and gets some TDs in leagues like this or the XFL when that starts.

I don't really buy this. Trubisky ran a 4.67, and Patterson ran a 4.71. The difference there is negligible. Patterson had a better vertical at the Combine, and Trubisky had better shuttle times.

I'm not arguing that Patterson is a better QB than Trubisky, but the difference isn't about raw athleticism.

Yeah, I don't think Patterson has shown he can be in the NFL but Trubisky wasn't selected because of his athleticism.  What I remember about Trubisky in that draft is a lot of coaches thought he was a really smart guy who studied hard and could process your gameplan quickly, plus he had good size and was pretty accurate in a pro-ish system.  Patterson is not great in any of those categories and that's why he's playing in this weird league.

Trubisky absolutely had "athleticism" considered as a plus when he was drafted. And heck, whether it's true or not (I think it is, but leave that aside), even Troy Aikman last week said when Nick Foles was not making plays against the Saints that the Bears missed Trubisky's "ability to make plays on the ground." So that's how Mitch is perceived in the league.

Back to the draft:
https://www.si.com/nfl/2017/03/21/mitch-trubisky-nfl-draft-scouting-report
"The athleticism is a plus, too. North Carolina drew up designed runs..."

https://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl-draft-profile-no-16-north-carolina-qb-mitchell-trubisky-one-year-standout-strong-upside-003415234.html
" Very good athleticism — testing numbers and size compare very favorably to those of Clemson’s Deshaun Watson in some cases."

Lot more where that came from. You can disagree with it, but that is 100% how he was/is thought of.

Nobody is saying Trubisky wasn't athletic; they're saying that Shea's athleticism is comparable.

I mean, Shea clearly had enough athleticism to be more successful than he was at Michigan, but for whatever reason he was never able to use it fully. Shea's decision making really hindered him, whether that was in his ability to read defenses or his refusal to keep the ball when he should have.

Bronxblue (who is great!) literally said "but Trubisky wasn't selected because of his athleticism." It 100% was a key factor. Again, just go read the scouting reports.

And regarding Patterson being comparable to Trubisky -- Trubisky is 1 inch taller, 10 pounds heavier, yet a bit faster. That's more athletic. He also has a stronger arm than Patterson. Heck, the only play he had against the Saints was a designed run; they do that for a reason.

Neither is Elway or Wilson in any of these areas, but I watch a lot of Bears games (have family members who are fans) -- trust me, Trubisky as athlete is a thing. Same if you do a Google search on him.

If you want comparable, I agree the key point is that neither are good decision makers and regardless of any of our thoughts of their athleticism, that's what's holding them back from being NFL QBs who are playing.

Our memories are being a bit selective. The offense was butt last time we were in East Lansing. Only the bomb to DPJ finally got it going. Otherwise we weren't doing anything

Last year was great, but also aided by good defense (2 INTs) and a blocked punt. Being able to chuck the ball into the Nico-zone after the block is a luxury Milton doesn't have right now. Not trying to pile on Shea, but you put Shea in that offense on Saturday and we probably don't fare any better

Although Shea took alot of heat here, including from me, he took it good to Sparty, and was 2-0 vs them.   I'm grateful to him for that.   He played good vs OSU too but our D didn't.

I watched the game.  Shea did well, and it was a fun game to watch.

The other team had Deveon.  They gave Deveon a lot of runs without opening up holes, so he had a tough time of it, unfortunately.

Although few players in the league may be recognizable to most pro football fans, among the other quarterbacks in the Spring Football League whom Michigan fans should remember, besides Shea Patterson of the Blues, are J. T. Barrett (Ohio State - Alphas), Alex Hornibrook (Wisconsin/Florida State - Jousters) and Zach Mettenberger (LSU- Austin Generals).

Still piling on Shea on this site? We sure as hell don't look any better without him.

Hopefully he kills it in this league. I was never thankful enough for his performances vs. Sparty.
