OT: 'Muppets' Revived at ABC
It may be time to light the lights.
ABC is filming a proof of concept for a revival of The Muppets, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady is co-writing the script for a pilot presentation that sources say could be unspooled at May's upfront presentation to Madison Avenue advertisers. Sources tell THR that the project, if all goes well, could go straight to series.
I may be old and in my 30s, but I've always had a soft spot for the Muppets. Feel like the franchise has been just ok lately and needed something new for the next generation.
I agree that some of their movies haven't been all that great (although the one about them getting back together was pretty good), but I think a return to the old weekly show would work fine. I don't think that would need a retooling.
Timely.
Especially on October 17th and November 28th.
Ms. Piggy has had a frog in her throat since 1974...
Anybody else LOVE the Muppet Babies!?
The Muppet Babies were great fun. They reinforced the power of imagination. You can go anywhere.
My brother and I would watch it religiously every Saturday morning. Baby Animal was a damn fool. "Go bye-bye. Ya-ya-ya-ya-ya-ya!" Two of the biggest mysteries thay have plagued me since childhood are why we never saw Nanny's or Dr. Claw's face?
They were a big part of childhood. I'd watch them again.
Ah, but do you remember which one is which?
I wonder how different/similar they'll make it. I'm a traditionalist by nature, so I'd like to see it be similar to the old one because to me, that's the best. Remakes, imo, need to honor the past....just like Jim Harbaugh does.
and at the time I was not watching a lot of that type of TV, but ahhh, to be 22 and watching Cindy Crawford on the television....those were the days.
Netflix is doing a Full House sequel called Fuller House, Fox is bringing back The X-Files, and now this. It seems that reboots and sequels aren't just limited to films anymore.
At least of those 3, I'm looking forward to Muppets and X-Files, so 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
Nine episodes on Showtime next year.
They called it Muppets Tonight. It was hosted by a big purple guy with pink dreads named Clifford. They tried to mix the old Muppets variety show with sort of a Tonight Show backdrop. I really wanted to like it -- I was in college at the time and Muppets held a place of reverence in my heart. In the end, it felt like watching a disappointing sequel to a favorite old film.
I'll be looking forward to seeing what they do with this one, though, because I'm a sucker.
But seriously. So. Excited.
Love - make that LOVE! - the original series. The talent, inventiveness, and just plain screw-loose sensibility of Henson & Co. was a sight to behold. And the celebrities they'd get! Any show who can pull guest stars like Gene Kelly, Julie Andrews, Steve Martin, Gilda Radner, John Denver, Alice Cooper, Sylvester Stallone, etc. had to be pretty damn good.
I'm begging you, ABC - please do it right, or else don't do it at all.
Ben Vereen, Christopher Reeve, Beverly Sills - this show taught me all I know about opera, the great Harvey Korman, most obvious star ever - Vincent Price, George Burns, Milton Berle - classic bit with Statler & Waldorf, the list goes on and on.
- The two old heckler muppets
- The Swedish Chef
- Beaker
I remember watching the original show in syndication in the early-mid 80s and periodically ever since actually - very funny show indeed and intrigued to see a reboot actually. Fun fact about it - John Cleese enjoyed his appearance so much he offered to be a regular writer for "The Muppet Show".
Anyway, a bit low quality, but the semi-famous introduction with Mark Hamill and the droids -
This is a good omen for the season.....
I still have nightmares about Sweetums chasing me down across a dark field in the moonlight.
