mwolverine.com has a list of "Michigan Athletic Scandals"

Submitted by uofmdds96 on March 5th, 2019 at 5:19 PM

I stumbled on this page http://mwolverine.com/Scandals_Michigan.html

when I saw that Ty Law was going to be an honorary captain this year.  I though that I remembered him pulling a firearm out of a car in an apartment parking lot when he was a player.  His link does not work, nor do several of the older links. Most of the list goes back to 1991, but there are a few other tidbits like James Joy Miller in 1910.

"At the end of the 1909 season, Miller was elected by his teammate to be captain of the 1910 team.[6] However, in December 1910, Miller became embroiled in a scandal that attracted national newspaper coverage when it was discovered that he had played the 1909 football season without registering for or attending classes during the fall semester. The Board in Control of Athletics stripped him of his selection as team captain and his varsity letter in December 1909. Following an investigation and resolution of the University of Michigan Student Council, the University of Michigan Engineering Faculty expelled Joy from the university in January 1910.[7][8][9] Joy disappeared for several months during and after the investigation and expulsion and was discovered in March 1910 wandering in western Canada. Joy claimed to have lost all memory of his identity and past events."

I had forgotten or did not see in the news cycle of many of these past offenses including Jamie Morris and Greg Skrepenak.  If you want to walk down memory lane click on the link.  And I could not find info on an Ann Arbor arrest for Ty Law.

That is correct. He claims to have only fired into the air and as I recall the evidence supported that. If true, he was over-charged and convicted. Something like reckless endangerment may have been more appropriate, assuming he was telling the truth.

I remember like it was yesterday and he was absolutely telling the truth - the cops were undercover plain clothes copy that broke into his car and never identified themselves as cops.  Btw/ they never found whatever they were looking for either.

If that whole thing happened in 2019, there would be campus protest.

Did you seriously confuse Ty Law and Shonte Peoples?  And yet you posted this trash even before you took 15 seconds on Google to confirm?

Ty Law was a model student athlete and Michigan and, to my knowledge, a model citizen in the NFL.  I would seriously suggest you ask the mods to delete this post lest some other moran believe your idiocy about Ty Law.

Does it have Big Will Campbell's car hood slide?  Ah, yep, there it is.

It's worth noting that a lot of cases on this list have to do with athletes or affiliated people being involved in scandals well after their time at Michigan.  Seems like someone has an axe to grind.

I don't think this is true.

Ty did, however, walk onto the Raiders team bus after the "Tuck Rule" game to call out Woodson for not giving him a postgame hug like they always did lol

Charles and Ty are close friends, but Charles was suupppeerrrr pissed about that.

It is a true story. I can't link in my browser, but Ty spoke about it on Rich Eisen's show, and so did Charles (separate segments)

Type "ty law Charles woodson rich eisen" into YouTube and both videos should be at the top.

You'll get a good laugh.

I don't remember hearing any of that Mike Milano stuff until just know. Sounds like he kinda got the shaft and Kampfer was a bit of a prick, not that he deserved to fracture his skull though.

Maybe I was just plugged in to a different circle, but I'm surprised you didn't hear about the Milano-Kampfer stuff. It was a big deal for the hockey team and it was exacerbated a couple months later when Kampfer had recovered and was playing against MSU. MSU's Corey Tropp punched Kampfer from behind into the boards and then as Kampfer appeared unconscious or hurt on the ice, Tropp and another player slashed at his head and neck with their sticks. It was the most brutal thing I've seen in a college hockey game and was so upsetting because of Kampfer's previous injury from Milano's assault. Kampfer's dad was so upset by it that after the game he went into the visitor's locker room and tried to attack Tropp. It was nuts.

That site is very ... Sparty? I picture its creator wearing an aluminum-foil hat and gorging himself on Cheetos.

EDIT: I looked at the main page. Probably not a Spartan, but amusingly old-fashioned ("Teach Yourself HTML!).

This link contains only allegations, no followup or resolution.  I hope the mods kill this garbage thread and not meaning any offense OP.  You want to call out Jamie Morris?  Read Bacon's book and you'll gain better understanding.  That's just one example.

You're telling me this guy ISN'T Wolverine?

Where are the OSU and State versions of this list?   I'm sure someone can come up with an algorithm to show that our crimes are lesser than our opponents by sheer quantity or overall detriment to humanity.  I'd like an interactive chart.  It'd be cool if it had fun icons like the basketball opponent charts.  What's the icon for ordering sex toys?

I created an account just to respond to this post because I am a relative of James Joy Miller and have some relevant information about the scandal via my Aunt who researched Joy (as he was called).

Joy did in fact have a head injury which he suffered before the 1909 season while playing in a football game for the Detroit Athletic Club. I’ll have to check with my Aunt re: documentation of that injury, but it was apparently significant.

It seems to be true that Joy neither  registered that fall for class nor attended some or all of his classes. But aside from his injury there was no apparent reason for doing this. Joy registered and attended classes in previous years and was a good student. Additionally, his family was financially secure enough that paying the cost for school was not an issue either.

Joy went on to live a productive life, but he was never the same mentally after that injury. My Aunt considered writing a book about this story and may still do so, but I’m not sure if there is enough interest in the Michigan Community.

Just thought I’d pass this information along for anyone who was curious. Thanks.

This is a good find. The list is somewhat lacking (some of the things on there, Justin Boren?) wouldn't fit my criteria, but at least it's a list to remind people not to be too holier-than-thou when talking about other programs.

There were a few items I distinctly recall from my time (91-95) that were not listed. In 1992 I remember Shonte Peoples getting in a bit of trouble for opening fire with a glock on cops who he thought were trying to break into his car. Then there was the matter of Damon Jones trying to blow up his RA's door in South Quad with some sort of a pipe bomb (I find that one hard to believe but did hear it from 2 separate sources).

Is anyone else surprised that mwolverine.com was avaialable as a website? I’m assuming that Dave Taylor runs the site? There is a lot of information on the site, good reading.

My Aunt researched his story - here is a little more information. Yes, Joy was expelled from school after failing to show up to defend himself. I don’t have this article at the moment but Michigan apparently did not take an in depth look at Joy’s case and did not want its reputation tarnished.

Michigan Dailey 1-28-1910 says Joy missed preliminary training for football at Whitmore Lake bc of injured arm and frequent headaches following the game at the DAC before the season that I referenced in my comment earlier. Joy is also described as moody, despondent, in a daze, and deranged by his injuries.

Detroit News 12-23-09 Once the team returned to school for practice Joy Missed two weeks of practice while healing his injuries.

Ann Arbor News 3-17-10 Joy was finally found in Walla Walla, Washington.

Michigan Daily 3-19-10 Joy’s memory was described as completely gone.

The Daily Times News (Ann Arbor) Joy did not know his own name.

Detroit Journal Daily 3-24-10 Joy did not recognize his own photo.

All in all it’s a pretty interesting story, but in today’s time it probably wouldn’t be so scandalous considering what we now know about the effects of head trauma.
