It's too bad Jim had to act like a weirdo during Amon's recruiting visit back in 2017. He would have been a complete stud at Michigan. Link.

“The next day, Harbaugh wants to bring us in his office,” St. Brown said. “He wants to talk to me and my boy, who’s being recruited, too. So I’m, like, ‘Bet.’ We go, they show us the facility, we get in his office. He sits down in the middle, and we sit down across from him, and he’s just sitting there in the middle with his legs crossed -- I swear to God, two minutes, not saying anything. Just looking around.

“Me and my homie are, like, ‘Is he about to say something?’ I’m thinking he’s going to start the conversation. He wants to recruit us. He wants us to come. He’s not saying nothing. Bro, I swear, he’s legs crossed like this, just looking around. Me and Julius are looking at each other, like, ‘I think we have to start the conversation.’ So we just start talking to him. Bro, it was so weird.”

I can't speak for others, but I don't recall much discussion of Orji being a check down machine. There are big questions regarding his accuracy and consistency, and so it's fair to point out that a bunch of short completions in the spring game don't really do much to answer those questions (and his accuracy on longer throws seemed to be much more of a mixed bag).

By contrast, I interpret a check down machine to be a QB that will consistently take check downs over longer throws. It's more a question of willingness (i.e. unwillingness to take the longer throw when the check down is there) or vision (always looking to the check down first) than it is about accuracy...

This whole discussion really illustrates how far Holmes and Campbell have taken the organization in a short time.  Sheila Hamp deserves props, too.

Gibbs may be the most talented player on the team.  LaPorta just had one of the best rookie TE seasons of all time and is poised to be a star.  St. Brown is the best slot in the league.  Hutchinson is a tier 1 DE.  Sewell is an all-pro RT.  Ragnow is an all-pro C.  This is the best Lions roster in my lifetime, only challenged by the underperforming 90s squads that had poor coaching and never had a real QB.

BUT--we need more stars on defense.  McNeil looks like the real deal and signing Reader was huge, but we need more balance on the roster and playmakers on the back end.  I'm hoping CD3 can be one of those guys and that he stays healthy.  Branch is very good but not yet a game-changer.  Hoping he and one of the young safeties make a leap this year.

Good for him and good for the Lions!

But a question on timing: why would a team make ANY contract commitment public right before the draft? It seems this takes away some negotiating position for possible trades during the draft.

Can't this wait until Monday?

He was going into the final year of his rookie deal with no team option since he wasn't a first round pick. This was the first year he was eligible for an extension and you definitely do not want him to hit the open market the following year. Timing was absolutely correct if you feel as if he is a franchise player (which the Lions believe considering he's now the highest paid WR)

What, you think that Amon Ra St Brown was going to be dangled as trade bait?  You think he isn't worth locking up long term vs possibly replacing him through the draft?

C'mon, man.  Signing one of the best WRs in the entire league is only doing what the world knows you were going to do anyway.  This doesn't change anything for anyone, anywhere at any time.

My brother in law is the team chef and has nothing but great things to say about what St. Brown brings to the building, great for the culture, great player, great production!

Great player and he deserves it but that's a lot of money given the other financial commitments they have upcoming.  I'd love to see them trade Goff at the top of his value rather than extending him for an obscene amount but they're in win now mode and it seems unlikely.

Any competent QB is going to cost an obscene amount of money, and as such I don't know that there would be a huge trade market for Goff.  I think the whole world also recognizes that he needs a line and playmakers -- he's not Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson - which would also depress his market.

Given what the Failcons had to pay to land Kirk Cousins coming off an ACL I'm perfectly fine with the Lions extending Goff.

Yeah JJ gonna drop to #29 and/or give up the next two years of first round picks and a second to move up 24 spots for unproven JJ and get rid of the first guy to win a playoff game for the franchise, and in fact 2.   Also a team leader.

Hand over a NFC champion game team to a guy without a single throw in the NFL.

Jesus.
