I think if he gets to 6-6 or 7-5 he’s probably safe. I think Warde reworking his contract essentially said “we’re hitting the reset button here” so unless shit gets really, really bad next year (I.e. losing nine games) then Warde will punt that decision to 2022.

But I personally am of the mindset that if I don’t see marked improvement this season, I’d have no problems with him leaving. This will be his seventh season. You have to know that by this point what you’ve seen is what you’re going to get. Harbaugh will have had time to adapt, make changes, soul-search, whatever, and if he still can’t get the job done, then it was just never meant to be.

Sure, the next guy could be even worse, but at least Michigan takes a swing and tries.

Based on the moves he’s been allowed to make, it’s pretty clear he’s being given more than just one season to turn this around.

You don’t replace almost your entire defensive staff, bring in a completely new scheme, and switch your focus to younger coaches with recruiting upsides if you have one year to turn around a team.

I don’t believe Warde, being good buddies with Harbaugh, left him in the dark on his timeline here. If he had one year, Warde would let him know that and more sensible moves would be made (like bringing in a staff to run a similar scheme, at least personnel wise).

I don’t see anything outside of fan grumbles that points to this being anything other than a free season for Harbaugh. Anyone really paying attention to what has happened the past few months is pretty much in agreement that he’s getting two years minimum.

If he’s on a super hot seat, you don’t let the guy bring in an entirely new defensive staff with a brand new scheme that we don’t really have the personnel to run. That alone points to a two year window at minimum. He made changes and he’s going to be given time to see if those changes work. And you don’t see the results of those changes in one year

I don't know man. I'm all for people bettering their lives and shit, but if you're good then these opportunities will be there at the end of the year. Seems pretty disingenuous to show up to a school and recruit a bunch of kids to that school and that leave 3 months later. If it's your alma mater or a "once in a lifetime" type opportunity it makes more sense, but this just seems like a job that there will be plenty of down the road.

Definitely not the most courteous goodbye, but I'm inclined to give Linguist the benefit of the doubt here. Guy had a successful run as co-DC at Buffalo, so I'm assuming that's why he was near the top of the list, and head coaching jobs aren't exactly handed out to co-DC/DB coaches that often, especially if the DBs are going to struggle as hard as we think they are this season. If he was leaving for a Defensive Coordinator job, I would be madder, but it's definitely an upgrade title-wise for him. When he was hired in January, Les Miles was still coaching Kansas and Buffalo wasn't looking to hire a new coach, but that obviously changed.

If you were suddenly offered a job at a new company with a title upgrade and a raise, you would have to consider it right? Disingenuous, maybe, but not going to fault a guy for looking out for himself, especially since he wasn't really attached to Michigan beforehand like Mattison, who's departure actually was pretty heinous.

I would be fine with Clinksdale as the new co-DC/DB if we manage to get him. Has similar young guy recruiting appeal, and would probably bolster our in-state recruiting punch further while being at least okay on the coaching side. Regardless, it's on to the next one.

If you asking, you are part of the problem. At 46 percent, Black athletes make up the largest demographic in the Power Five conferences of the Football Bowl Subdivision (the top level of college football), which had nearly 8,000 participants last season.Aug 27, 2020. This year, there are 13 Black head coaches among 130 FBS programs. It's not a given he would get another opportunity. Read my post and stop fanning the flames.

Are you black, because if you are a white guy, then you are seeing things from a white guy perspective. Facts are facts: black coaches do not have as easy an opportunity getting a head coaching job, no matter how good they are at their job.

Anyone who believes otherwise is in denial of the facts every year. Look at how Bienemy has been overlooked for jobs every year for nobody white guys (Hi, Philadelphia Eagles, we see you) who may end up being good coaches...but who have lesser resumes than many black coaches.

Clinkscale? Hasn't Michigan kicked those tires a couple of times now?

Sucks about Linguist... timing is horrible...

gritting my teeth about recruiting as he was instrumental in the verbals from down south.

Clinkscale makes $500k at Kentucky. Linguist was slated to make $680k at Michigan. Offer Clink $700k and the vacated Co-DC title. If he says no, bump it up. It’s time for Michigan to do what it takes to win as a program, and Clinkscale is a good coach and an excellent recruiter.

I don’t know what Michigan (or MSU) offered him in the past, but I do know $500k from Kentucky shouldn’t be too much to overcome if they really made a play for him.

Coach Mo was a good recruiter for sure and might have been a pretty good DB coach too (unfortunately won't have enough evidence to find out) but the guy has moved around a lot.  Always seemed like a Jed Fisch type to me.  Always looking for that next gig, trying to find out if the grass is greener elsewhere.

I know “the football program is cursed” has become a cliché, but seriously, the football program is cursed.

It's not really a curse.  They're just making bad decisions with certain hires.  This kind of thing would have been tough to predict (leaving after 3 months instead of a year or 2) but Linguist was never going to stay at M for very long.  Just look at his history.  The guy has bounced around all over the country.  For someone so young, that doesn't seem normal.

I liked his recruiting ability.  Unfortunately I never thought he'd stick around longer than a season, maybe 2 at the most.

I wouldn't call it a bad decision to hire a guy you figure might only be around a year or two.  That's college football coaching at this point, and everyone accepts that.  Losing a guy because Les Miles sexually harassed coeds for years and Kansas wound up unexpectedly having an opening isn't predictable.

Except  they don’t have to predict the exact reason the guy ends up leaving, just that he’s probably going to.  Literally any normal event is unpredictable at a fine enough level of detail— e.g. leaving for this exact job for this exact reason on exactly this day.  But some are pretty predictable in more general terms.  People even write contracts to attempt to deal with some of those circumstances.

Good luck to him. Can’t blame Mo for taking a HC position at a solid program. Hopefully we can get a strong replacement.
