IMG seemingly getting some mileage out of the Michigan camp

Submitted by BlueMarrow on

I thought this add I saw on ZeroHedge was intersting.

Most of the press on the Michigan trip to IMG was on Michigan, and recruiting.

IMG seems to me to be working it a bit, and rightfully so. I've read a bit about them, and it's incredible what they have established.

Of course, one could make the agrument that they have multiple international students in many sports, and they are not referring to Michigan in any way. But, the photo on the add is not a golfer or tennis player.

Well, it's a nice sidebar ad anyway. I imagine they'd probably run things like this whether Michigan had practiced there or not for some reason, being what they are, but then it could be that the recent campaign - if this is it - is decidedly Michigan-inspired in its content and timing.

About Michigan camping there it's the first time I have seen anything saying it. Almost everything I've read has said it was a pain in their ass and didn't know if they would allow it again. I'm guessing that crazy Jim must of read the same thing and decided to tell the whole coaching staff at IMG as well as all the IMG player parents that he had a job for each of them as the assistant of football operations. Tho I'm sure most will stay put at IMG since they obviously have a better team and program than Michigan.

Good for them. This is in no way a knock on UM. Hope they get some run out of this and welcome UM back (or help to make UM coming to another similar school even more appealing.)

I just thought the messgae, including "Build your camp" was interesting, given the fact that I did not recall any writer writing an article with the angle on what Michigan going to IMG meant for IMG.

Hopefully, the negotitor for UM was smarter than me, and will be in the future, when writing the deal. (If there is a future deal).

I don't know what Michigan paid to camp there, but the PR value for IMG was significant.

I just found this to be an interesting side topic on an otherwise slow Sunday.

Are you familiar with the concept of advertising?

How many commercials do you see for entities that "were (not) pretty well known before."

I bet that the PR value of the camp dramatically exceeding the expectations of IMG, and the MI negotiators. Good for IMG.

In the future, Michigan will point tom the PR value when negotiating the next deal, if a deal is allowed by the NCAA.

It is my understanding Country Day  charges as much or nearly as much as does the University of Michigan as to admissions. Of course, any private school focused on honing the  minds of tomorrow relies the importance sports plays in developing a well rounded person, capable of doing a number of things, so they do  provide scholarships and surprisingly, most of them are extended to superior athletes they locate on that side of the  state, right? Well, or so I thought. I realized a long time ago, if a kid like Chris Webber comes along, he is going to be afforded more opportunities than a young man possessing any and all of the skills Chris has except he's 5'9" and doesn't play  basketball. Hell, I think he belongs to the  Chess Club. Obviously Chris, being fortunate enough to being born to a couple of the size and athleticism to produce a kid of this  height and with superior bb skills is going to have political advantages the  other won't. Politics, deal with it. Move on.

I was thinking Country Day, because they can, much like all private schools throughout the state seems to have a tremendous advantage when it comes to their sports programs, with the above being the example I was sure everyone knew. Hell, they set a  record for the number of state championships won by any individual school in one year.

However, in this particular year, it appeared football would not be included in that list. In their final regular season game, their starting qb went down with an injury, done for the season. Most everyone wrote them off. They entered the playoffs and the new qb who was, indeed, a member of the football team the entire year either saw very little PT due to being a backup or possibly played another position. It has been a number of years, so excuse me for forgetting a few of the details. However, this young man's father was a faculty member, lured to Country Day for some position it appears they could not fill with a qualified candidate within 1,00 miles and yes, please bring your son with you, an All State baseball player in New York and an outstanding qb. No one knew nothing of this until the playoffs began, the kid played like he had been their all season, competing timely third and longs as well as their previous starter and they end up winning the whole thing, so indeed their football team  was included in whatever number it was that broke the state record.

I don't like Country Day for the same reason I don't like people that defend Brother Rice and Catholic Central and claim they don't have built in advantages against public schools that must face them but are coeducational and these are all boys schools. How can a school with the same population, made up completely of the gender that plays football not have an advantage over public schools due to nothing else than having twice as many poossible candidates based on nothing but enrollment? It exists, therefore I don't like those people either. As now Coach  Wheatley will bear witness, "Every parochial school in the  Greater Detroit area came knocking at my door." Yet none of them recruits. I don't like them either.

Now why in the hell should I have any interest in IMG other than the possible football recruits we could get from there. If that is what this post is about, I apologize, but I still do not understand why parents would send a son there, already considered the number one high schooler in the  nation for one season at a price that defies credulity. It's quite possible people of my means do not get rich people. You rich people probably get it. Been a hectic day. Too damn much Tequila and sun. Should probably have concentrated more on acquiring wealth that having fun. Have good night guys. Go Blue!!!

As a product of all public schools myself, I am giving you the mental slow-clap, Wolfman. That said, my wife went to Cranbrook and I've since come to understand the fairly extensive set of advantages the top private schools can offer--whereas the only real advantage I took from public school was probably an increased ability to deal with adversity.

I live in Florida and was looking at basketball camps for my daughter. They have those for every sport, male and female. If anyone is interested, most week-long camps are only $2400-3800.
