Graduation Szn Open Thread
Exactly a week from today, 2023 UM Grad (my son) will be on the field at Michigan Stadium to mark his graduation from the University of Michigan. He'll join me (1989), my wife (1991), my mother (1952), and my father (1949) as fellow Michigan alums.
He'll be sticking around for a one-year Masters in his program (School of Information)...and then off to wherever his first job takes him.
I have to say, the whole experience is very surreal. Like most parents, I look at my kids and still see them as they were when they were very young. Yet, here we are. We are especially proud, as our son wasn't a student you could look at in elementary or middle school and say, "yeah, that kid is going to Michigan." Through his own efforts, a significant amount of growth and maturation, and a little bit of a village that we created around him, this somewhat unexpected and long-awaited milestone is happening!
Anyone else celebrating a graduation in the coming weeks and months? Hope we can turn this in to a graduation Posbang!
Congrats to all of the grads...whether it be you or someone you love!
Third generation, very impressive. And I like his chances in the job marketplace. Go Blue!
Congrats to you and your son!!! Great accomplishment.
I understand the pride you feel. Both my sons have multiple Michigan degrees and did medical residencies at Michigan; they finished a few years ago. 19 years at Michigan when you add it up. Both boys are now practicing physicians.
To say that I am proud of my Michigan Men is understatement.
Congratulations! Savor the day. Hard to believe it's been 11 years since our younger daughter graduated from U-M on a chilly, wet April day. It was such a proud moment though for my wife and I - both 1981 grads. Sanjay Gupta was the speaker and had a great message.
Agree - many congratulations to all this year's graduates and their families.
Congratulations to your son, you and your family.
Who is this year's commencement speaker?
A year or two ago someone bought up commencement speakers from the past.
Walter Cronkite was mine in 1984. My sister had Lee Iacocca in 1985 I believe.
I have an older sister who graduated from Northwood in the 70's and had Bob Hope as the speaker.
Go Blue!
Consider yourself fortunate. My speaker in 1989 was James Duderstadt. Looking back on that, all I can say is, "Really?! Did the original speaker back out?" The weather was lousy, too. Two siblings had George Bush and Hillary Clinton in the early '90s.

My graduation speaker in 1978 was Vice President Walter Mondale.
Congrats to all the 2023 grads!
I really hope this petulant GSI strike isn’t screwing over these kids, delaying their grades, impacting their ability to get transcripts for employment verification, etc.
Don't know anything about the GSI strike. What makes it, in your words, petulant?
They’re asking for a 60% raise next year, among other unrealistic demands. They’re harassing Ono at dinner and pulling fire alarms during final exams. They expect the university to continue paying them even though they’re not working. Etc
I don't spend any time on the FB parents' group, but after last weekends events, there are rumors that the GSIs do plan to disrupt graduation. Hoping that doesn't come to pass.
One year ago we were in Michigan Stadium with our oldest. It was a wonderful day but bittersweet, he loved his four years there and we really enjoyed getting to know his roommates, their families, and “tailgating” at their house before the game or two we went up for every year!
So Congratulations! Enjoy the weekend and best of luck to your son!
Great post.
My daughter is graduating. I'm an alum and I never thought I would feel something more meaningful about "this Michigan of ours" than my own graduation.
Now, my own graduation seems insignificant in comparison.
The fact these students made it thru the pandemic and are graduating is miraculous.
Congrats to all, We Are the Best University - in the World.
Go Blue!
Congratulations!! We will be there next Saturday celebrating as well, as our twin sons are graduating!! (2nd generation of Michigan graduates in the family)
It does seem like yesterday we dropped them off and moved them into their dorms. Time does fly!
Well my wife and I finished our master’s degrees 5 years ago but just paid off our loans this month so I’ll celebrate with you!
I barely remember a single detail of my big house graduation, in fact I don't even know if I went. My family went though, sat right behind Anthony Kiedis. I definitely remember going to our engineering one at Crisler.
Congratulations! Our daughter graduates from GT in early May. I was surprised how emotional I felt when our oldest graduated from college- a special day
Enjoy the day - my daughter is third generation too. She graduated in 2015 (Zingerman's guys). It was very special.
In the same boat here. My oldest is graduating from CMU with a dual major in Accounting / Financing with a Minor to Data Information (5 years)
Aside from graduating, he has a job lined up already starting right after graduation. Mom still calls him her baby and I still see him a my son that we supported growing up with his ups and downs.
His maturation, especially during his years at CMU have been astounding. Could not be anymore proud..
I know that it will be very windy and dusty that Saturday (May 6th). I'll have to wear my sunglasses. Congrats to all graduates and parents that invested in supporting said grads...
That’s a great dual major! Nice when the kids select a major with great employment options. We were quite pleased when our son announced that he was interested in information/data science…rather than philosophy or history.
Agree, my daughter graduated with a dual major in CIS/Bus Data Analytics from a good school and has done quite well for herself in 3 years since.
I went to college by way of a GED. I will be watching my daughter graduate from UofM next weekend. A very proud papa.
Congrats to your daughter! And let her know that she inspired you to break from your nearly 6-year hibernation on the board. 😊
Congratulations to all the graduates! My four are long out of college, and not a single UofM degree among them. They stayed closer to home (Kansas) but produced several bachelor's degrees and one master's. It's true; attending your child's graduation far exceeds the joy of your own.
Why is it when someone shares something nice like this that someone else thinks its time to start cutting onions around here?
Congratulations to you and your family!

My son is also graduating from UM next weekend, with a BS in Biology. A dream come true for him and his mom and me. After graduation he's off to a clinical research fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. We couldn't be prouder of him and his twin sister, who graduates in a couple of weeks from the Fashion Design School at Kent State.
Congrats to all the graduates!
Congratulations!
My daughter will be graduating Saturday as well, joining my wife and I who graduated UM in 1993. She will graduate from Stamps with a BFA in design and a minor in music. Also a four-year member of both the MMB and Hockey Band.
Our son is a HS senior and will be attending UM in the fall. He's strongly considering the school of information and hopes to join the MMB drumline.
The only black sheep is our eldest, who graduated from Northwestern in 2020.
