Friday Night Drinking Thread - Favorite Whisky Edition
Didn't see one posted so I thought this might be interesting...What is your favorite Scotch; American whisky/bourbon or rye; and playing the field, favorite outside those two regions? Here are mine…
1. Scotch - anything Ardbeg
2. American- Two James (out of Detroit) any of their ryes
3. World - Waubs Harbour a relatively new distillery in Tasmania

Such an important thread you posted it twice, for now anyway. Lol

) Scotch - Rosebank - previously defunct distillery, recently revived
2) American - William Larue Weller / Any of the Old Fitzgerald bottles from before ~2015. Really like the older stock wheated bourbons
3) Suntory Hibiki Harmony - really well-balanced whiskey

Wow. That Rosebank distillery looks awesome…and incredibly expensive!

The original distillery closed down in the early 1990s, and for a number of years in the early 2000s, the remaining bottles were available relatively cheaply. When Diageo bought the land and the label/trademarks, they started to restrict the flow and limited it to yearly aged, "special releases."
The label was sold recently to Ian Macleod Distillers, who purchased remaining stocks and decided to reopen the distillery using the same process, scheduled for 2024 opening.
The older stocks are really, really great, and one of the best lowland distilleries (in my opinion). The flavor profile is more floral (go figure) and not a lot of peat/smoke, which is more my speed vs the incredibly smoky scotches that are really popular.
If you can find a bar that has the 12 year old Flora & Fauna bottle for a reasonable price, it is worth a try, if anything just to try something different (and old).

Definitely sounds like in 2024 they will be producing some affordable product. Thanks for the tip.

I loyally drink Glenfiddich 12. I should expand to something else but I’m too lazy.

If you don’t want to go too far out of your comfort zone try the 14. One of my favorites.

It’s probably a lame and unoriginal but my favorite whiskey is Jack Daniel’s

Sinatra would approve of your choice.

I was going to edit to add that, seeing that it was you who asked.

Shit. Tigers walk off from meadows and lions connect on a bomb to take the lead.

Scotch - Glenmorangie 10 (amongst ones I drink regularly, not that it’s the best scotch ever. Just the best one for regular consumption)
American - bulleit
World - glenlivet pretty much anything, but let’s go with 16. I’m sure there’s better ones I can’t afford.

Scotch - Probably a tie between Oban 14 year and Bruichladdich Port Charlotte (currently on a bottle of 2013, though anything Bruichladdich has been outstanding thus far), though Tallisker 10 year is super solid as well for the price
American - Recently had a bottle of Basil Hayden Toast that was totally enjoyable

Scotch - nope, nope, and fuck nope.
American - Weller Full Proof or Michter's 10 year rye/bourbon (depends on the mood)... but I live in Canada now so once my WFP and M10R bottles are empty I'll probably never get them again.
World - Dunno, haven't really enjoyed any I've tried so far.

If you can find the Weller Antique 107 up there - it is a good subsitute at a slightly lower proof.
Also, I find that the Larceny Barrel Proof is a nice (affordable) alternative to the Weller line - not quite the same flavor profile as it is Heaven Hill vs Buffalo Trace, but still solid. The BP is usually around $60 MSRP here in the States.
The regular bottling of Larceny is good as well, but the lower proof might be off-putting for some used to a little more burn.

We get asked this question a lot on our podcast and it is not as simple as naming the first or even second whiskey that comes to mind, which may have left a memorable mark. There are so many quality whiskies out there right now, we like to just focus on the most recent high quality juices we have sampled....with that being said
Scotch- The Glenlivet 17 Year Old Single Cask Butt 2020
US-GTS any year, the godfather of high proof uncut, unfiltered bourbon

My uncouth palette thinks all brown liquors are the same. Cognac and Brandy taste better than Whiskey. So my go to is Remy Martin when someone else is paying and Costco Brand or Captain Jack when I'm buying. Maybe some Chivas Regal if it's on sale.
