College Hockey NCAAT - Friday Other Games Open Thread
Down goes Denver! Lost to Cornell 2-0 in yesterday's closest game. Bridgeport & Allentown Regionals today. This thread is (mostly) for the 3 early games; U-M game thread will be separate.
OSU vs Harvard, 2 PM ET, ESPNU
MTU vs PSU, 5 PM, ESPNU
Merrimack vs Quinnipiac, 5:30 PM, ESPNews
U-M vs Colgate, 8:30 PM, ** ESPN2 ** (was ESPNU)
Doesn't seem quite right to have these games so early.
Somebody's got to play early, if you're going to minimalize overlap and not have a game starting at 10:30.
We are so overdue for a hockey national championship banner.
As the higher seed, shouldn't UM have had the earlier game and more time to recover before the next round? I thought that was usually an advantage afforded to the higher seed?
Sure, in a world where TV ratings don't matter.
I think the world where ratings don’t matter… was “pre tv and radio”, a century ago…
It's also not nearly as big of a deal now that there is a day off between games.
Back when the quarterfinal was the day after the first round, it seems like Michigan would very often be forced to play a night game when they should have had the advantage of playing the afternoon game.
So, my preference for this evening’s other three results…
The Michigan of the East… over the squad from Columbus.
Michigan Tech over Penn State.
In the “ack” battle, I prefer Merrim over Quinnipi…
I loathe Harvard as an institution so much that I also want to root for OSU. Definitely a meteor game.
The meteor is often a solid rooting interest. And, with the Northern Lights - perhaps we’ll be pleasantly surprised. Go Blue!
Part of me wants to see the B1G win all the games, but another part of me doesn't like the taste of vomit in my throat.
Go hahhvahhd
Not sure what to pull for in Tech-PSU. Prior to yesterday, I would've preferred PSU because they'll play more to our liking and Tech has the risk of goalie-ing us. But after seeing Mankato go down 4-0 last night, I wonder if the CCHA isn't a touch overrated and Tech wouldn't be the preferred opponent. Penn State has beaten us this year and is more talented than Tech
Quinnipiac is on upset watch. Possible paper tiger vs. hot Merrimack team
OSU scores first, 1-0.
DZTO leads to goal.
A couple more DZTOs for Harvard, who's lucky they didn't end up in the net.
Tripping on Harvard @ 9:35.
Harvard kills it off.
Wow, OSU shot hit the post, bounced right between Harvard goalie's legs, and he closed them to cover.
Am I the only one that has no idea what the difference is between Hockey East and ECAC? I know that HE is the better conference and has the Boston teams, and ECAC is generally bad and includes all the Ivy league teams. But if you put the generic Northeast college names (Merrimack, QPac, Colgate) in front of me and told me to guess which conference they were in, I wouldn't be better than 50/50 in guessing.
I imagine the East coast fans probably feel the same about Big Ten/NCHC/CCHA.
Think of Hockey East as the B1G of Northeast Atlantic hockey.. either flagship state publics or high profile privates (Boston College).
ECAC is essentially Ivy League plus upstate New York and Qpac.
It feels to me that these announcers have no idea how Ohio State plays. They keep talking about the patient way they play clogging the neutral zone. In reality they play a high pressure aggressive forecheck.
OSU scores again, 2-0. But maybe goalie interference?
Maybe not? Contact with goalie's arm was outside the crease. Goal stands. Harvard loses TO.
OSU 2, Harvard 0, after one.
I mean, that was essentially peak OSU. Perhaps they are still hot about the beating they received from UM in the BTT. Harvard has to have next goal.
Looks like the incredibly talented high school team of freshmen and sophomores playing the less-talented, but way bigger and more experienced upperclassmen.
So the plot of Mighty Ducks 3?
OSU goal, 3-0. /smh
that's a sieve....the 3rd goal was pretty....as much as I wish OSU was mutilated all the way.
And ... that's gonna be it.
Sent after third goal. 4-0 is not something that Harvard is gonna overcome.
And again, 4-0 OSU.
Beautiful goal(s) for Ohio State. Maybe the Big Ten is just that good. Now up 4 - nil
I dunno if 3rd goal was all that, more WTF was Harvard goalie doing? Just made it easy for OSU.
I think it's entirely likely that the B10 is that good.
4-0 OSU now. Harvard's taking it in the ass...
I was about to type, 3rd goal was DZTO, and Harvard goalie went way to the outside of net on the right to cover puck carrier, but he went too far, the guy passed the puck between him and post, and it was a slam dunk.
Sounds like something Portillo might do...
*grimaces...
Well, except Harvard guy didn't flop on the ice and lose his stick.
I dunno if I'm supposed to laugh or cry at this...
Maybe the big ten is that good....b/c Harvard doesn't have the talent or speed to keep up.
Colgate is also ECAC. Hockey plinko caveats apply, but maybe good for us?
Which is crazy because Harvard has the most players drafted (15) of any team in the country...
Sheesh. 5-0. And next game isn't until 5 PM.
Hitting from Behind on Harvard @ 9:43.
There is a real possibility OSU puts up at 10-spot at this pace.
Gross.
Maybe they'll use up their ammo.
6 of one, half dozen of another. 6-0 OSU.
Slashing on Harvard @ 16:53.
