CFB Risk Final - You Can't Have One Without the Other

It's Over, And We Left No Doubt About Who Are The Leaders and Best

Y'all did it. Nearly 1,500 of us went to battle last night and came out as decisive victors. When the dust settled, we had 71 territories to our name, while Ohio State had just 34.

More impressively, you helped us out-recruit Ohio State for the last turn. Their player count rose by over 200....ours rose by over 350! In fact, OSU's main recruiter (Westopher) was so impressed that he reached out to me and said...

"I just wanted to wish you a huge congratulations on pulling together the largest team in the game, and the largest sustained player base of all 3 games. Absolutely insane, you have my envy, and my respect."

For our efforts, MacGyver and I were awarded "Recruiters of the Year," but we would be nothing without y'all. Michigan's approach to recruiting has been different from the other big teams -- we rely on all of you to keep the community engaged and fighting. We don't have a single powerhouse recruiter. Instead, we believe that the power of our incredible community COMES from our incredible community. When you recruited a friend, it doubled your impact on the game, and that snowballed into a ridiculous advantage for us that lasted throughout.

I anticipate that more teams will try our approach in the future, but our success might just be The Michigan Difference. We will see.

All We Do Is Win, Win, Win

Despite the massive win, RNG didn't do us any favors last night. We came in at -8 vs. expected territories.

HOWEVER, we did get very lucky by taking each of Tuscaloosa, Starksville, and Tallahassee. We were underdogs in all three territories and only had a ~2.6% chance of winning all three. By nabbing them, though, we successfully "blacked out" the map -- meaning that we owned every territory in the game for at least one turn.

A few teams were trying for this achievement. For us to get it as a side victory in addition to our overall dominance is *chef's kiss*.

Krrsten on Twitch

BeerAg interviewed our fearless leader and Coach of the Year Krrsten on last night's Risk stream. I actually missed it, so I asked BeerAg for the clip, which he was kind enough to deliver last night.

So thanks to my forgetfulness, y'all can hear from Krrsten about how she got involved in Risk, what makes her a good General, her embracement of our freakishly large rogue army, and more.

In particular, she and BeerAg spent a lot of time discussing the ENORMOUS IMPACT of MGoBlog (thank you Seth!) and the contributions that each of you made to the winning effort. You can hear some of that at the 9:30 mark.

With all that said, thank you again for being part of this awesome victory. None of this would have been possible without you, the Wolverine Army. It was an honor serving with you.

Without further ado....

Muppet Time!

And you can't have one without the other.

If something makes people happy, it matters.

Tho I don't get it either, seems like the first 40 turns just gains you XP and the final few turns are everyone attacking everywhere. I did the first season and that was enough. But the community was pretty decent and great at shitposting so I can how it could be fun.

I also played the first time that I learned about it here a couple years ago. It didn't hook me. I am glad y'all are glad, but only a little, for I am a curmudgeon. Bah!

Truth be told: I've struggled staying engaged with sports. The highs are high, but the most of it is just blind allegiance. Blind allegiance has mostly taken from this world, as far as I can tell, and I struggle with that part of it. I do get happy when my teams win. I do have pride from afar when Michigan beats other teams, but I also have a hard time justifying getting angry when we lose as I've gotten older. My wife hates sports, and there is nothing more surefire to piss her off than let the performance of a group of college-aged men alter her day. I see her point, and in practicing swallowing my annoyance over the years, I've found that it really doesn't matter. I tend to just turn it off and move on with my day.

By now, the University of Michigan is (and most major universities are) just a hedge fund with a teaching wing and some sports teams with loose associations to the broader community. As I've aged, that view has taken the front seat, and suppressed my fandom. Extending my weakening fandom to a random made-up game on the internet in order to fill arbitrary tiles with the logo of my team feels like a bridge too far. I come here for good writing and wit. There are good writers and witty people that work for this place and that post on this board. Risk is not adding to what draws me here.

Same here more or less. I don't view universities as much more than an employer or business, so I'm long with you there.

As far as sports goes, I'm more jaded by a) fans (re: McNamara on this board) and b) refs (also fan of Arsenal, Lions, Lewis Hamilton, etc.) so I don't a) interact much online or b) pay as much attention anymore. And to your point, there are enough good writers out there that I can keep up with things.

Not to say I wasn't happy when we beat OSU or sad when we lost to TCU, but those emotions were like 5% of previous levels lol.

Bottom line is obvious but we each have to figure out what levels make us happy. If you want the super highs you have to deal with the super lows that come with that emotional investment. And if you don't want to deal with the lows, well you probably have to lessen the highs. Maybe you and I just don't want to deal with the lows or the angry/negative people anymore.

Outstanding job getting us recruits to the top of the mountain!

That being said, STAYING on top will be a challenge.  Everyone will be gunning for us next year.
