BBall Recruiting - Rivals' Final Rankings for 2019

Submitted by Matt EM on May 7th, 2019 at 12:02 PM

Of primary concern for the good guys:

Jalen Wilson (#47 - pretty much ended up where I expected as a consensus 40-60 prospect as opposed to 5star)

Cole Bajema (#95 - acceptable range; I'd probably go a bit higher in a re-rank but understand based on lack of competition level)

Nahshon Hyland (#91 - far too low, he's definitely a tier or two higher than this)

Not a single recruit committed to a  B1G school in the top 25. Three in the top 40, with DJ Carton the top rated guy at 32. Couple undecideds still looking at B1G schools in the top 100 but not a strong showing from the league. Only schools with top 25 classes are OSU, Maryland and MSU.

Meanwhile Arizona has the #3 class under a guy who pays players out of his own pocket. le sigh.

None of the teams in the B1G really have a coach capable of utilizing a one and done type talent anyway. Beilein's system is honestly probably a little too complex for the average freshman to be able to just jump in and pick up. Not conducive for showcasing for the league. This is beyond just paying kids, Kentucky, Duke, and Arizona have very simple systems offensively that allow for players to slide in and get minutes. Michigan State is honestly way better off with 3-4 year guys than one and dones, I wouldn't be shocked if Izzo doesn't make that mistake again. But if we're keeping it a buck, the team to watch out for is Illinois. They have a borderline 5 star center signed for next year, they're returning 90% of their production and minutes, great guard play returning, and a coach that not only is really good and can gun it around, but he's the perfect snake oil salesman to keep Chicago kids home.

They struggled early last year, but by mid Big Ten play, they beat Maryland, Michigan State, and a few other very solid teams. I think they have a chance to be a sleeper in the conference.

Wagner is playing in Germany until sometime in June so he'll decide after that.  Iggy has until May 29th to decide to come back or stay in the draft.  There's talk about grades and test scores being an issue for Hyland (he missed school because of injuries/family tragedy) and that he may prep for a year.  My guess on Hyland is that he isn't coming this year and if he does prep, that'll give other schools enough time to catch up to UM.

Thanks for the update!

Based on my recollection, it looks like Hyland is moving up in the rankings.  It looks like all the prospects who are committed or on our radar are well ranked recruits.  This is encouraging.  It would be awesome (barring a Brazdeikis return) if we could land both "Bones" Hyland and Franz Wagner this year.

Do you have any insights into the class of 2020 yet? I've watched some stuff on Scooby Johnson, and he reminds me of a very poor mans Draymond Green in terms of his size, competitiveness, and skill set, but I just don't know how well his game will translate. Draymond is an anomaly of all anomalys and I'm not sure how well he'll do. Are my concerns warranted?
