Archie Miller Breaks Down How Hard Michigan Is To Play
If you have not seen Archie Miller's post game press conference, it is worth a watch. A large portion is spent discussing Michigan. He breaks down from an opponent perspective what makes Michigan so difficult to play. Much better than Iowa's press conference.

Here's a link to the part where he talks about Michigan:

Archie just looks like a pre/early teen boy when talking to Juwan. Feel like he's asking Juwan for an autograph or a photo together when they get together.
February 28th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
I think a lot of us would look like that standing next to Juwan.
February 28th, 2021 at 4:26 PM ^
Yes, but Archie has a baby-face in addition to being vertically-challenged.

Overheard on mic’d up: hey dad, want to play catch?

Nice reference

Look up. See blue.

He’s no painter, but I love when coaches do these breakdowns instead of the usual “they played real hard” routine
February 28th, 2021 at 2:24 PM ^
well yeah, because Fran's postgame conference was like watching a lawyer try to defend his obviously guilty client
No politics.

anyone think that Archie will do a better job than Dak for ESPN?
February 28th, 2021 at 2:34 PM ^
Maybe, but Dakich’s honesty is refreshing. I know folks dislike him but he is obviously a big Michigan supporter and he tells it like it is. Unlike every other color guy who toes the company line.
February 28th, 2021 at 2:40 PM ^
Dakich just talks too much it causes pain on the ears.
February 28th, 2021 at 2:53 PM ^
Agree. Rafterry is the worst of them.
Can’t listen to Raftery with all the I’m-so-folksy affectations.
February 28th, 2021 at 2:54 PM ^
I like that, except for a few comments about lack of effort and blown calls, Dakich is mostly positive.
(I can bring my own snark to the game.)

I mean, I know that several people who cover the Hoosiers routinely are trying to push Miller out the door, but I wouldn't give him a spot on BTN just yet....

Based on results it seems like Indiana is too big a job for him right now, in large part because his recruiting has been only decent. Doesn’t seem like the style he wants to play can hang with the more talented Big Ten teams but I could see him going somewhere else and having a lot of success. Similar to what he did at Dayton. Don’t have a school in mind but I could see him succeeding even in another power 5 job, just not in the Big Ten or ACC.

Indiana Basketball and Michigan Football have a lot in common these days. I don’t think Miller is that bad of a coach but the Indiana program doesn’t have the national draw it used to.

Dakich is the best in the business by far.
Robbie Hummel.

What is this unusual sense I'm sensing in his comments? No whining. [* coughfran *] No throwing his players under the bus. [* coughizzo *] Could it be respect? Self-confidence?
February 28th, 2021 at 3:09 PM ^
Coach Howard needs to use the response to the last question as a recruiting tool. Thanks Archie!!
February 28th, 2021 at 3:13 PM ^
It's not because Phil Martelli's the real coach?

One of the really interesting things Miller touched on (it gets talked about SOME, but not enough) is Michigan's ability to outlast their opponents. It seems to me like conditioning is actually a MAJOR contributor to M's success this year, because (as Miller said) they're able to sustain it and just wear teams down.
Seems to me that Michigan's ability to keep the high-effort level of play deep into games is a huge reason we see the gaps open up in the second half.

Conditioning, discipline and coaching

I agree with you, Boston. And it shows how valuable it is to have a legit backup center who can eat up minutes.
Keeping Dickenson out of foul trouble and fresh unleashes all his power and skill down the stretch.

No doubt. That’s the Pay Riley Miami Heat influence on Juwan. The Heat are always one of the best conditioned teams in the league and known for their brutal cardio off season conditioning model.
February 28th, 2021 at 4:47 PM ^
I'm wondering if the layoff will be a blessing in disguise? A break in the middle of the season in preparation for the stretch run. We can only hope.
I dunno about that. Generally, it seems like other teams around the country haven't exactly fared well after lengthy COVID layoffs. Players and coaches at this level are hyper-competitive, they want to play, they want to get into a rhythm and stay in that rhythm, and they generally find these layoffs to be frustrating. It's a tremendous credit to Howard that Michigan was able to stay focused and looks like it hasn't missed a beat despite the lengthy layoff and the short turnarounds necessitated by rescheduling.

The utility knife that is CBJ is a great help to this I feel. The dude brings 3 minutes of hell every time he comes in the game. Always feels like Juwan uses the Brown substitution to start his bench work going and his energy just transfers directly to John’s, Davis. and the whole damn bench.
To a great extent, this was true during the Beilein era as well, so credit to Jon Sanderson for our conditioning advantage (as well as to Beilein for bringing Sanderson to Michigan, and to Juwan for convincing him to stay).

Archie Millers is a prime candidate for 13 or 30. Or maybe 15 or 50
February 28th, 2021 at 6:58 PM ^
That Archie thinks his team played competitively and with the right attitude tells you all you need to know that he isn't the right coach for the job. I respect those who disagree on this, but that was NOT a team fighting for their tourney lives.
February 28th, 2021 at 9:37 PM ^
Yes, and I think the real knock on Miller, and what might be his undoing, is that his teams don't play with a lot of desire. Motivation is his responsibility.
I think Livers' comments about how the team "wants it all" and isn't seeking to win just one championship (e.g. the B1G regular season championship), but all of the championships (i.e., the trifecta of the B1G regular season championship, the B1G Tournament Championship, and the National Championship) were very revealing of the kind of culture and mentality Juwan is instilling.
