WTKA Roundtable 7/21/2022: The Good Cop
Things discussed:
- Remembering Gary Moeller: major part of Michigan's modernization (a wide receiver won the Heisman!), was the good cop, vastly unappreciated, especially for his time as an assistant. Needed one break.
- Football predictions: Ohio State is on their own tier, Michigan is on their own tier after that, worried about trips to Iowa (because of Kinnick) and a visit from Maryland because they have great receivers versus our much younger secondary.
- SEC/ACC Media Days: coaches don't like NIL? NCAA has an opportunity here to create a system that benefits their game but the individual schools are just trying to do whatever helps them (except Michigan). Use this to stop guys from going to the draft early and not playing in bowl games.
- Big Ten Hoops: Indiana? Illinois-Michigan? MSU is going into the season with 9 guys, which is good because then Izzo will only play ten of them. Bigs are going to have a lot more fun now that some of the centers are gone. Purdue will find a PG.
- Hockey nonconference: fine. Good that they dumped the GLI because they can't field a team when Juniors take away half their roster.
- International trip: good chance to get together.

I think it's kind of telling that Michigan went to Lebanon to fill out their roster and Michigan State's like we've got 4 open chairs, it's fine.
MSU also has really good receivers and a coach who is pretty good at beating Michigan. Seems like MGoBlog continues to underestimate that team.
I don't think they are underestimating the team. They are looking at the analytics and making a call. Seth was pretty clear in the podcast that despite what the numbers say, do not over estimate them.
a coach who is pretty good at beating Michigan
Some hard-hitting analysis there man. What did Tucker do to get Hutch’s TD overturned and cause us to fumble twice in the fourth quarter?
Based on a sample size of 2? One of those being the year of covid hell and the other featuring one of the worst overturned calls the review process has ever seen? I am not convinced. The last time that they played a B1G game they got absolutely embarrassed by OSU. Will they give us their best shot? Yes. Does that make them a great team? No.
This is less about hard hitting analysis and more about my personal frustration with the number of years MGoBlog has acted like M should finish off MSU once and for all, only to see Michigan lose. Last year at the HTTV pick up Seth was highly confident in telling me how poor MSU was looking and trying really hard to boost my confidence that M would easily beat them.
I’m certainly still a big supporter of Seth and the blog but I sense a long running blind spot for what MSU is capable of.
BucK up, Braveheart. We don’t let our sense of self-worth get shattered by a couple of games of football, right? Hello? Hello?
To be fair to Seth, EVERYONE expected MSU to stink last year, and most people didn't expect Michigan to do much either, they were probably considered to be slightly better. Both teams did a lot better than expected.
Thanks for the reminiscences about Gary Moeller. Away from TV for most of his time as head coach, I hadn't realized how significant he had been.
Sam! Say Hi to Flint for me. Played HS basketball there. Working on my pilot's license, I flew a plane in & out of its airport solo. Hitchhiking, I often had to get a second ride there. Lived there and taught there. (Does that make me a Flintstone?)
Are we really worried about a home game against a Maryland team that we hung 59 on last year with no resistance? We might score 70 so I don't think our secondary matters in that one.
more worried about the team they hung 59 on than the team who has beaten them two years in a row and rebuilt a poor roster into an 11 win team through the portal. Who also has really good receivers.
I did really love that kick return trick play with Michael Barrett. I hope we see that again this year.
