Exit Drew Singleton Comment Count

Per Steve Lorenz:

247Sports confirmed with Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf on Wednesday afternoon that second-year linebacker Drew Singleton has asked for and received a release from the program.

Singleton is a redshirt freshman who came in with a big recruiting rep and an ACL tear suffered during his final year of high school; he'd rehabbed it and was seeing snaps late in blowouts. Singleton got a bit of offseason talk as a candidate at the WLB spot that is currently being split between Devin Gil and Josh Ross, but it seemed like when Michigan put Devin Bush on the bench late it was Jordan Anthony who came off it.

Not great to lose a talented guy before he even has a shot at Bush's job, especially if he was good enough to be a consideration this fall. Michigan will likely be fine. In the aftermath of Bush's assumed NFL departure they can either move one of Gil or Ross over or get a leap forward from Anthony or Bush-ish true freshman Cam McGrone, who's redshirting.

My guess is he can stay enrolled for the rest of the semester, but why not stick it out with the team through the season if you are already going to be here? I guess you could be really unhappy in your situation enough to want to be done with it and not want to risk any injury.

And if I understand the rules correctly, he will still have to sit out next year. So he will have 2 years to play 2 beginning in 2020 unless he qualifies for a waiver or medical redshirt.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the unsportsmanlike penalty he got on kickoff during the Maryland game IIRC.

Went back and read a bit of his "Hello" post. It sure seemed like this was a top tier caliber player, with 'some' slight question put in there because of his the torn ACL his sr year. Still seems curious even with our current players that this kid didn't show out a bit more? I'd love to know the backstory on why we haven't seen more. Talent? Desire? ACL lingering worse than expected? Homesick?  The NJ pipeline seems to have clogged. And the second question is why is he deciding to bail? Timing seems odd.

I'm hoping theres some special circumstances we don't know about, otherwise this is a selfish move on this kids part leaving mid season during rivalry week, when he has to sit out all next year anyway. Understand if you don't want to sit, but wait until the season is over.   Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

The fact that he's leaving the team mid-season suggests to me that the reasons extend beyond simply being disappointed with his PT. Could be a lot of different things—homesickness, girlfriend back in NJ, hates A2, doesn't like his academic experience at Michigan, etc etc etc.

From a PT standpoint I think he's failing to keep in mind that injuries happen every day and can quickly result in greatly increased time on the field, but players leaving programs is hardly a unique thing these days.

Bummer.  I was really excited when we got him and remember hearing about him at [spots] or pizza house on Gary's recruiting trip.   You invest a lot in these guy's recruitment and want to see them flourish.  I actually like reading the TTB round-up of former commits and players and like when they do well.

I wonder if this means Quavaris Crouch is coming?
