Ace: Note Re: Yelling Band Member
I got word today that the young woman in the band whose screams were picked up on TBS's microphones during the game last night received some very inappropriate responses from some fans, including the threat of violence.
I wish it was needless to say, but it's one thing to joke, and quite another to take it to that level. I don't have much time during the tournament to check on the board/comments. If you see any comments like that around, please let one of the mods or staff members know—the moderation action thread is here—so we can take the appropriate action.
College sports are fun, and silly, and sometimes we joke around to get through a slog like last night. Please keep sports fun. Much more importantly, please don't threaten or make light of violence against women.
Also, after talking with people at the game last night, it's obvious the problem was a poorly placed microphone — our photographer on the baseline and several others at the game didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.
Thankfully, the band member in question is apparently doing just fine. That doesn't excuse any comments that cross the line.

It was shorter in Egyptian.
Easily one of my faves.

It was a little annoying but you have to give her an A for her effort.

I don't have to and I will not. It was fucking annoying.

found it a little annoying, but whoever it was kept it up during the whole game, so I doubt they were annoyed enough to ask her to stop. It made it easy to know who had the ball.

I'm glad I was watching the game on mute, I guess. I didn't even notice.

I miss Brandon...

What a combination.

I only noticed it one time.
Im sure the young lady in question is supremely embarrased today.
And shame on the narcissistic, me first, punk ass dickheads that threatened her. The internet has been brutal on peoples sense of common decency and empathy.

I watched in a bar, too much ambient noise - who screamed what, and why is she being theeatened over it?
Could someone recap please?

She screamed, "Tom Izzo is a fair and innocent man!" and Michigan fans jumped all over her.
until someone on the live blog kept bringing it up.

I had the game on mute while i tried to get my screaming 4 month old to go to sleep. I'm sort of glad to hear that everyone else had the same screaming soundtrack to that miserable game as I did. It was fitting.

Oh, man. I am also in California and have a four month old. Luckily, he got his scream fest in earlier in the week and was pretty good last night.
I noticed the screaming fan a bit but wasn't overly bothered by it. Slightly annoying. I recall there being a (MSU?) fan consistently screaming through a game last year... ugh. I guess I admire their spirit.

I love being a grandpa. The rewards are just as awesome as raising your own with none of the frustrations.
Four months old and you haven't taught them not to scream during Michigan games yet? How will they ever grow old to be part of the "down in front" contingent?
I should have muted it. The color guy was the worst.

Someone from mgoblog reached out to her personally?
March 16th, 2018 at 11:30 AM ^
The message I got was in regard to tweets that I believe were directed at the band. She became the focus of much of the twitter conversation during the second half and apparently some of it went in that direction.

How did people figure out her name / identity?
March 16th, 2018 at 12:14 PM ^
because she thought it was cute, and took credit for it on social media.
I have zero tolerance victim-blaming bullshit. She didn't seek out anything. I'd ban you if I didn't want to use this as an example.
People responded to threads on twitter and directed ire at the band's account. I do not believe anyone figured out her identity, thank goodness.
She's absolutely not a victim. Everyone's eardrums are.

That someone standing next to her, even a friend to ask her to stop yelling. Much like fans who yell at every golf shot, I don't understand why she felt the need to scream everytime they had the ball.
Being said, not cool to threaten violence.

Shes young and excited and believes she is helping the team. What fans dont often realize though is that when you are on the field or court you never hear crowd noise. I played 3 sports through 12th grade and cant recall any crowd noise at any point in time. Not even announcers on the PA.
the players can and did hear us. Cheeseman from LSSP (have no idea what the real accronym is) gave us a huge shit eating grin when we were chanting his name and they were up 4-1.
"listening to". No, you didn't listen to any yelling or PA announcers or anything like that. You're zoned in, so yeah, you don't hear what people are saying.
But if you didn't "hear" crowd noise or if the energy from crowd noise didn't have an effect on you as a player, either positively when being cheered at home, or negatively while on the road or if you weren't at all affected by a dead neutral site gym, you are a rare bird.
There's a reason teams have a very statistically significant advantage at home and part of it is the energy from crowd noise. There is a reason players lift their hands to implore the crowd to make noise. They feed off it.
Little secret: A lot of people in the band do this every game. I probably peeled the paint off the walls at Yost a few times when I was in school. The only difference is she was near the mic, and other people weren't.
While I appreciate the enthusiasm do you think it really impacts the game?

Teams feed off positive energy from their home crowds. I get that. That's not what we're talking about here. Does loud obnoxious noise make it difficult for the opposing team?
What does it matter to you?
March 17th, 2018 at 12:06 AM ^
What the hell do you mean "why does it matter to you"? Our collective viewing experiences were shat on for something that in all likelihood had zero impact on the game. Players feed off of large crowds of people getting excited after momentum inducing plays, not some shrill voiced woman screaming the entire game.

Someone from THIS BOARD threatened her? They should be cleaning up donkey shit in Bolivia forever...

You act surprised by this.

Obviously it's more serious, and I agree that something is wrong with anyone threatening the young lady with violence.
However, it does offer an opportunity to share my favorite MGoBlog diagram of all time...
Edit: My formatting sucks. Anyone with an ounce of tech sense who can help me out?
