So, Jim Mcelwain...hypothetically...
Hypothetically, how would we feel about him as the 10th assistant?
Edit: Secret's out.

As long as he's Offensive Coordinator, sure. Awesome.

Odd. Only a few months ago he was insulting our program and head coach.

And, on Valentine's Day, I will note that REMORA is an anagram of RE: AMOR.
Coincidence? Nawh. It's all about love with McElwain.

Clingy little suckers.

It'd be a little embarassing to take on the shark humper mantle in Ann Arbor, but his record at Bama and Colorado State is impressive. Seems like the wise man would see that the dude may have been a crappy head coach, but was a great OC
February 14th, 2018 at 5:48 PM ^
maybe not a P5 level head coach, but as an assistant on our staff, I think he would add a lot and help improve our offense. It would be a very good hire.

I'll personally pay for his lodging in the marine biology lab and an expense account to the Safe Sex Store on South U.

as backing this one through at least three conversations now, and hasn't budged in his position. McElwain offends me aesthetically and rhetorically, but if he gets us wins, cool.
February 14th, 2018 at 5:35 PM ^
He does have a face made to be up in the booth. Good thing that's where he'll be (theoretically).

And while people seem to think that was about having Dee Hart, he turned the unit around before Hart was eligible to play.

was doing some google searching about mcelwain and he was in consideration to go back to Alabama before Saban snagged Enos from us.

McIlwain has much more experience coaching WRs, a better record as an OC and a far better record as a HC, fwiw. How would this not be an upgrade?
February 14th, 2018 at 7:45 PM ^
believe he also got SEC coach of the year award.

So when he got to Bama in 2008, their previous 3 recruiting classes were ranked 3rd, 12th, and 13th (average of 9.33, coincidentally ours is nearly identical at average of 10th). They hadn't yet gotten to the level of recruiting they're at now, so he wasn't exactly winning with Tua, and Najee, and Ridley. His first team that he improved from 54th to 7th in S&P had John Parker Wilson at QB and Glen Coffee at RB. His second team that went undefeated with a top 4 offense had Greg McElroy at QB handing off to Mark Ingram and throwing to Julio Jones.
By McElwain's 2nd year at Bama they were starting to get to the ridiculous talent level that they boast now, but they weren't quite there yet, and they certainly weren't there in his first year under Saban. He took Bama's offense to a dramatic improvement in his first year, and also dramatically improved Colorado State in each year he was there. I don't think the talent at Bama is much of a confounding factor in his success there, I think the guy really knows offense. I can stand a "conservative" or slow-paced offense so long as it's efficient. I'm good with only averaging 30 a game if our opponents only average 12.

I would also say he had a lot of success with Bama talent before Bama was what it is today. He took over in Saban's second year and the offense immediately took off.

The "sources" going around seem to say OC/WR coach.
February 14th, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
Probably about as odd as Tom Crean being hired by John Beilein.
February 14th, 2018 at 4:37 PM ^
Would gladly take Milhouse as an assistant coach.
February 14th, 2018 at 4:44 PM ^
In the last 6 months or so, an old and close friend of mine has forged a personal friendship with Tom Crean. My buddy is a pro baseball scout and lives in the Michiana region, and I think the connection is that he has scouted Tom's son as a baseball prospect, or something like that. But he and Tom hang out (I guess Tom isn't all that busy right now).
Anyway, my buddy is an avowed Hawkeyes fan, so it's not an Indiana/Marquette thing, and he has met pro athletes and coaches all over for the last 20 years. Tom Crean is one of his favorite people in sports. It was weird hearing all this after all the grief we give Crean on this site.
I'll see if he has ever met Shark Fucker.

Would rather have Mcelwain over

the hair cut alone should preclude him from any job anywhere.

I so wish I had thick hair like that.

this has been discussed quite a bit over the past week. to summarize:
-shark humper
-shitty head coach at FL so don't want
-great job improving offense at CSU so do want
-OC in early years of Saban regime so do want.

and seemed to be well thought of. He just took a job as the WR coach at Division 2 Indiana State.
GA to assistant coach at a school like Michigan is a very big leap. I'd guess that coaches typically make at least 2-3 steps up in between.
February 14th, 2018 at 5:06 PM ^
We hire analysts and recruiting coordinators with an eye towards promoting them. Some of them have already left for Power 5 assistant jobs. I could see a GA possibly getting promoted to a bigger job on the support staff.
