Why not Michigan State? It would be weird choosing MSU over Michigan because I have been rooting against them my entire life. I am confident I made the right decision for me and I can’t wait to get started.

Kelon Gervin obviously hasn't gotten the Lil Bro' Memo yet. He's not supposed to say UM "didn't really recruit him" after he left ND. He's supposed to say nasty things about UM and how he'd never go there...

He's jumping on right in time to be a part of our 2018-2019 National Championship team. Congratulations in advance.

But Furtney doesn't even look close to 6-5/290 in that picture. Is the News using a picture from 2015 or something?

How many on here remember when this was your primary annual source of recruiting information?
FYI, I also remember when cars were called "horseless carriages" and pants were called "longshorts"...

Apart from these articles, I remember the extent of my recruiting knowledge beyond the names that would get national / regional hype (and there weren't that many overall) as being the first time that you saw certain players on the field and said, "Who's that?" and then you cheered them along like anyone else on the team.
February 6th, 2018 at 4:03 PM ^
Yep. Back in the day I followed recruiting like this:
The morning after national signing day, pick up local newspaper. See who Michigan got. Repeat the following year.
February 6th, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
I'm three days older dirt, and remember when recruiting wasn't even covered in newspapers. You learned about kids in their Sophomore years when they were allowed to play in games.

Reggie Pearson on why he didn't go to state....
February 6th, 2018 at 2:10 PM ^
I was always a Michigan State fan and they offered me. But when I got into the recruiting process I started to see my life in the next four years and didn’t like it at all, like how they’re having serious problems with players. That’s something I’m not into and don’t agree with and I try to get myself away from any negative things.

That deal would hurt any program's recruiting. I laughed at a couple of the Detroit msm articles which were rushed out in the first couple days after the OTL report saying it didn't impact recruits.
Recruits who are committed, but have other similar level programs after them will never admit it's a problem in the immediate aftermath. But they are definitely seriously weighing other options behind the scenes. Guys don't want to appear disloyal.
Then when it comes apart with a recruit it's always down the road and it always appeared to unravel slowly. The offending school gets to save some face.
The bottom line is the net result over an arc of a couple seasons or more is rarely equal or better after something like this.

Yeah, that caught my eye as well. I feel like that's going to be a big reason for them suffering in recruiting the next year or two. Like, I get this happens elsewhere, but it rather clearly happened at MSU for a long time and nobody stopped it, and some kids aren't into going to a school that doesn't seem to really be all that interested in changing that culture.
February 6th, 2018 at 5:49 PM ^
for a recruit to just come out and say that in the paper like that
February 6th, 2018 at 2:32 PM ^
Hard not to root for a kid with the courage to say that.
edit: i'm apparently incapable of replying to the post to which I was actually replying. (Pearson on MSU.)

sorry if i missed the backstory on this since i don't continuously follow recruiting, but any reason we haven't been on kolin demens harder given his brother played at michigan?
February 6th, 2018 at 3:04 PM ^
and McGrone in this one? I can't recall any talk of us recruiting any more LBs in this class for quite a few months.
February 7th, 2018 at 7:22 AM ^
Demens doesn't really fit the mold of who Michigan has been recruiting for the past couple years. He's a long, lanky outside linebacker type. Michigan has been going after shorter, squatter guys on the inside (Devin Bush, for example), and they want S/LB hybrid types for Viper. Michigan threw Demens a cursory offer, but they didn't really pursue him.
February 6th, 2018 at 3:08 PM ^
You can't lock down the state if you don't recruit it...

At 5'11" Gervin is too small to play CB at M. I still wish M had pursued McCall and Sampson. Looking at the entire article, M got the guys they went after hard, with the possible exception of Ovie Oghoufo, a LB going to ND.
February 7th, 2018 at 7:23 AM ^
Michigan didn't really go after Oghoufo very hard, either.
We got all the guys we wanted within the state.
February 7th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
Thanks. I really appreciate your contributions here.

Yeah. That was my take as well. It wasn't a particularly great year for in-state talent; I don't follow recruiting all that much, but it does seem like a down year. Though I guess Michigan has never been a high-talent football state.

If Michigan offers - and pursues - the top 10-15 kids in southeast Michigan, they would probably get the vast majority of them. In a small-ish class like this one, you would be talking about almost filling up the class with those kids. Taking 15 in-state kids would only leave about 5 spots for players from elsewhere.
February 6th, 2018 at 3:23 PM ^
Not one of their commits said Michigan recruited them. Reggie Pearson was brutal, and another said he grew up an MSU fan and turned them down. At least they got the #1 guy on this list.

At least it seems that way to me. He'll get a chance to practice at his preferred position, then get moved. It looks just like Ben Mason's recruitment. We needed him at FB and didn't want a 5th LB in the class. We need Hayes at OT, not a 3rd TE. Maybe if we landed Patterson and Petit-Frere and missed on Muhammad the plan would change.

Yes, position switches are possible
February 6th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
I don't know, but you should ask Chase Winovich.
February 6th, 2018 at 5:31 PM ^
February 7th, 2018 at 1:19 AM ^
It depends on how much weight he adds. He won't play OT at 265. He won't play TE at 305.
February 6th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Was recruited as a QB, but I doubt he got serious consideration at the position. I don't think it's a new paradigm to tell a kid he can play the position he wanted to play in HS and when it does not pan out the staff moves him where he can best help the team. If Hayes can run fast enough (I don't think he can), he will play TE, if not I do believe this kid could be a stud LT in a couple years.
