A.J. Dillon: The One That Got Away
So, did anyone (besides Magnus) notice that A.J. Dillon totally killed it this year as a true freshman at Boston College?
- 1432 yards rushing
- 13 rushing TD
- 5.3 ypc
- ACC Rookie of the Year
- 1st Team All ACC
Obviously, UM's current group of RB's were good but, man, it would have been nice to have the next great RB on the roster for the future.
Can anyone recall what prompted him to decommit?

Patterson isn't leaving Ole Miss for anywhere unless he knows he can play next year.

But, but, but... he says he has a feeling. It must be true. Everyone's feelings should be posted on every message board at all times.

No, Yo. Only gut feelings.

The NCAA, with support from Jim Delany and B1G, will rule him ineligble in 2018 if he comes to Michigan. However, any other school and he is eligible.

he will be given and exemption and be able to play next year.

Nothing to do with Najee. He wanted to play RB, and Harbaugh wanted hi as a LB. He left, Harbaugh tried to keep him, but he had a good year...

down in our version of Toledo. We'll call him up in a couple of years and he can play for us then.
I love how JH has perfected the free agent market at this level.

Michigan's next conference title - 2018.
BC's next conference title - long after Dillon's gone.

It's not too early for that conclusion. He wanted to be a RB and Harbaugh wanted him to play LB here. He chose RB and had a hell of a year. He may or may not have been a starter at Michigan but it would have been at a different position than he wanted. Now, next year he will be returning as one of the top RBs to watch.
I understand the need to justify a different conclusion for your team but.....
Not that complicated.

"Harbaugh wanted him to play LB here" is an overstatement. At the time, Sam Webb reported that JH said 90% RB with LB as a possibility. I understand Dillon's decision as 100% at BC was more attractive to him than 90% at UM.

Agreed on the wear-and-tear comment. I don't know if Ty Wheatley's attitudes towards running back by committee (RBs only have so many carries/hits to the body, don't burn them all in college) was the mode with running back coaches before Wheatley, but in my mind it's nigh on criminal to run someone as many times as BC did,,,he averaged almost 30 carries a game over the last six games...
And I'm glad for him too, but hope he gets a chance to make money in the pros...

Was that he wanted to be 'the man'. Basically, the sole RB. Not going to happen at U of M.

and if that's what he wants, then he clearly made the correct decision. Harbaugh does running back by committee and now Dillon will be a star at BC for the next 2-3 years. Gonna work out great for him (as long as he doesn't mind losing a lot)

He said himself that he wanted to go where he could play right away.
December 3rd, 2017 at 11:15 PM ^
Technically speaking, there's no proof that he wouldn't have been a stellar LB as well (at the college level at least).
He made a great decision either way, and I'll be cheering him on no matter what.

He didn't like the depth chart.
December 4th, 2017 at 12:27 AM ^
False. He wanted to play RB, not LB. He went somewhere he could do that. Pretty simple.

Those are the numbers you get when there's not a RB by committee system. I would bet a dollar Higdon and Evans combined have better numbers.

Don't forget Ty Isaac's 548 yards and 2 TDs.

1590 rushing yards, 17 TDs, 5.8 YPC.
We had good RBs this season. Unless Dillon could have played the right side of the line or QB, he wasn't needed.

Just like Higdon and Evans
December 3rd, 2017 at 9:24 PM ^
- 1590 yards rushing
- 17 rushing touchdowns
- 5.8 yards per attempt
Edit :beat to the punch
December 3rd, 2017 at 9:26 PM ^
273 carries for 1590 yards (5.8 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns.
If you add in Ty Isaac's stats you get 361 carries for 2138 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and 19 touchdowns. While obviously you can go too far with this sort of thing (few running backs in this day and age are going to get 361 carries), that's still more than half a yard more per carry.

Averaged over 150 YPG in his last six games. I wish him luck at BC. Our record would be the same even with him on the roster.
