Interesting interview on Speight and reason for transfer
Brad Galli with a nice piece over on ABC on why Speight decided to transfer. Although Speight denies any hard feelings towards the staff, he does seem a little slighted by the fact that he was splitting reps with the other QB's in spring practice.
“There are certain things that are maybe hard to put into words. I have always been in quarterback competitions. At the bus last year, Coach Harbaugh said I’m gonna be a top quarterback in all of college football this season. Then the first spring practice happened and I was splitting reps,”
Interesting take and look into the program. Apparently a meritocracy indeed. Video in link.

what he did in the offseason down to his exact completion % on every other Tuesday morning, under overcast skies, with recievers who are Capricorns.
Doesn't mean he didn't put in the work or that Harbaugh wasn't also a hard-ass,; just that ignorance from any party is unlikely.

Kinda surprised Marshall is coming back, but great for him. He will be another valuable depth piece on the DL.
I'm assuming Ways will likely grad transfer, no?

I would think he can do nothing but improve his draft stock by returning. I'm sure the team will offer.

At this point it's probably 70/30 he is back at Michigan.

not speight, go get a trassfer?

I did the Google thing and couldn't find anything. Was he injured or did he get passed over?

nice of you to share all of this.
any thoughts on who might start at QB for the bowl game?
November 28th, 2017 at 9:20 AM ^
Has to be Peters with JOK as backup. I can't see Speight or the team risking his neck for the bowl game. Peters practiced some last week, albeit without contact. He should be ready to go this week for full practices.

Not to be a dick, but have you been watching the games? He's the 3rd TE at best, maybe 4th behind Wheatley and maybe even 5th if Eubanks wasn't hurt.

I remember listening to the podcast and Brian and Co were salivating over Bunting as a freshman. Him never putting it together will be one of the all-time mysteries of Michigan football.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:21 PM ^
He had some good moments and I wouldn't be surprised to see him prosper next year at a less competitive place (assuming he still wants to play). I don't think it was a matter of him never "putting it together." In an all-other-things-equal sort of way, the coaches might have just gone the younger guys.
November 27th, 2017 at 11:35 PM ^
I guess I don't see how a 6'7 tight end finishes his career with 11 catches and 0 touchdowns.
November 28th, 2017 at 12:48 PM ^
It starts with playing behind possibly the best TE in program history when he was healthy. Add in the situation at QB (and OL) which held back the passing game: Rudock was learning to work with the first string guys, Speight was learning how to be a QB as a first year starter and then there was this year, injuries and 3 QBs plus competition with 3 other good TEs.

likely better blockers

Man, I was totally thinking Bunting would have had a HUGE year. Guess the emergence of Gentry squashed his reps. Gentry has a chance to be a special player. Dude is a living mismatch.
November 27th, 2017 at 10:35 PM ^
Gentry has the ability due to his size and speed to become special. Maybe like the guy who plays with Brady.....

Gentkowski ftw!

Gentry will play in the NFL.
Dude is going to be a monster in 2 years.
Its just easy for him.
I really like all our tight ends.

Hard to have a huge season when your leading receivers have 20 something catches. Am I the only one who would hold their breath every time our qbs would drop back?
November 28th, 2017 at 10:04 AM ^
He looked great in the Orange Bowl after Butt got hurt. Guess McKeon & Gentry had better offseasons.
November 28th, 2017 at 9:21 AM ^
That is because if we can get the ball to him Zach Gentry could be an all american. Also McKeon is right up there also. Once again an example of Harbaugh knowing who he is recruiting. Bunting is a good player, but these kids can take it to another level. Extremely fast and only getting better. I am impressed with there development.

to be active (i.e. return to a dressing player) or 50/50 to return to starter quality production.
It was a horrible injury. History says for similar injuries, just being able to play again would be a massive surprise, let alone at previous levels.

that comment says a lot. Look this is big time college football and there is going to be competition every day and you better be ready to compete. It's also necessary to get backups quality snaps in case they are needed, something we saw a lot this year.

Ironically, Shane Morris probably could have saved the season if he stayed. Glad to see him do well at CMU, though.
