Pretty sure that's not how it works. At a certain point in the season, if you play, you are ineligible for the medical redshirt. It isn't based on amount of time on the field, it is when during the season you play. If DCaff plays, he is a sophmore next season. No Ifs, ands, or buts about it.

and your redshirt comes off, with no chance for a medical RS. They are looking at a rule change to make an exception for bowl games. That's a reaction to players looking ahead to the NFL draft and sitting out bowl games.

kill it against OSU, I think he be in (and would have been in a long time ago). Everyone else already hit it that a true frosh playing with the scout team all year isn't a good enough bet to do well. Ain't happening.

This.

...and be very effective as long as we add a play where 10 Michigan offensive players quickly form a tight circle with arms interlocked and put the ball carrier in the middle so the defense can't get to him. Then we march the QB down the field and across the goal line.
It could work!

Thought you could only play in games in the front end of the schedule and not burn a RS.

Only for the first part of the season - otherwise you have to redshirt that idea.

Doesn't it have to be a "certifiable" injury, though? I'm sure the NCAA has already made arrangements to prevent athetlic fraud from happening.

in a comment yesterday. Maybe the OP should edit the post and change it to Genrty (and delect the red shirt part).

Also Baylor is one of the basement teams this year.

defenses in the nation is nuts. Remember there was a reason for the Peters insertion at a specific date. Throwing Dylan-and i realize he's probably ahead of most his age- is still ludicruous. We'll take John and do the best we can and not worry about having this young man suffer a serious injury before he's able to adapt against lesser, much lesser athletes.

You'd be throwing McCaffery into a no-win scenario. You honestly don't think that OSU would stack the box with 9 guys and bring the house on every other play?
If we had a wooly mammoth, Bama-esque OL that could protect him and great running backs to take the pressure off of him, you could probably talk me into it. But you'd have a true freshman QB starting behind the worst OL in the country when it comes to pass pro. Going up against arguably the best and deepest DL in college football. What the hell do you think is going to happen? There's no way he walks out of that game with his head still attached to his body.
We don't need to send him out to slaughter. Also, if we lose to them 49-3 and burn his redshirt in the process, would you still think that's okay? Because that outcome with McCaffery at the helm is far more likely than him springing an upset.

I totally agree that Harbaugh would play the QB which, in his estimation, gives us the best chance to win. To that point, I think that might also be the reason you really haven't heard much about McCaffery to date, and that isn't to say anything about his ability overall, just to where he probably is on the depth chart and in the system. I wouldn't roll him out save in some bizarre emergency scenario where he was the only person who could stand whose position on the roster read "QB", and really, why would you want THIS game to be his first, of all games? The move makes zero sense even as a thought experiment.

If he was ready, and better than the 3 guys in front of him on the depth chart, I think Harbaugh would play him, redshirt be damned.
I mean, if he's really that good he's not staying for 5 years anyway.

If the game is close in the 2nd half and O'Korn gets hurt, I'm with you in that I'd play him, but only if the decision has been made for Speight to be extended the offer to come back. If UM goes into next season with Speight and Peters, there's a good to great chance McCaffrey can redshirt next season as the 3rd string QB, right?
