Not making this up: Another Jon Gruden destination... and Raiders still in play!!!
What brings two of our favorite running jokes together?
1. "Jon Gruden is a candidate."
2. "Raiders are still in play."
It's like chocolate and peanut butter... nitro and glycerine... Raiders in play for Gruden!!

Jon Gruden can't possibly be that stupid.
November 17th, 2017 at 5:37 PM ^
But the whole Gruden thing doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Dude has been out of the game so long, especailly in regards to college. I think he's a huge name, I just don't see huge results coming from this at this stage in his career.

He would be a disaster in college, man. He is nothing like Harbaugh. He's never been so much as a coordinator in the college game, let alone a head coach. He himself literally said that he would hate recruiting, multiple times! Can you imagine that dude in some kids living room? Yes he is crazy, but he is not Harbaugh's type of crazy and he's not Harbaugh's type of football genius either. Comparing the two is football fan malpractice.
Also, he wasn't a great coach in the NFL like Harbaugh was. He won a Super Bowl but also finished in the bottom two in his division more often than he won it. He finished with just above a .500 record as an NFL coach. He would bring Tennessee another decade of 7-5 and 8-4 and another decade away from relevancy. He would like a lot more like Lovie Smith in college than Jim Harbaugh.

As it stands Gruden has one of the top 10 jobs in America

ESPN currently pays $1.9B per year for MNF. Some speculation that ESPN will ask Gruden for a paycut considering the recent troubles with their business (including 100 additional layoffs pending including on-air talent). What ESPN decides to do with MNF when the contract expires in 2021 will be a big indicator on how fast their business is deteriorating (the NFL will be looking for more $$$ not less). During the 10 years of the existing contract, ESPN will have lost 30% of their subscribers.
Gruden may be looking at the ESPN ship and realize that it is starting to sink. He is 53ish right now and his window to get back into coaching may be closing. A lot of speculation about Tennessee because of close family connections (he was a grad asst there, wife was a cheerleader there, son goes there now, in-laws live near Knoxville....).
He could probably demand $10M per year at Tennessee with a huge buyout just in case he flames. Not bad for calling Spider 2 Y Banana every other play.

A "disaster"? C'mon dude.
I get your point, and I believe it has some validity, but your conclusion is so ridiculous that it is hard to take you serious.

Tennessee paying a guy $10 million to go 7-5, when it's been almost 15 years since they were a top 3 program in the SEC would be a "disaster" in my book.

That description fit Lane Kiffin a few years ago. Now, he's just sad.

He was supposed to be USC's coach and got "Herbied" then they hired Kiffen. I actually was hoping M would make a run at him this last search before JH became a real possibility.
I can't see Gruden going back to coaching. The number I heard was $20M/year between his ESPN gig and all the other stuff. Why go back when you can bank that with little stress? I think he's following the Madden career path.

To answer this, I believe that you must first buy a copy of the rare live monologue "Gruden After Hours", because it still seems to me like he did not tell the whole story a couple weeks ago.

I talked to two guys at the bar last night - they were betting games. They said they know the Grudens and that Jon says," I make $5 million a year working 16 days a year"...doesn't sound like he wants to coach again. They also said Jay Gruden tips them off on bets and that Gruden's wife bets big!

would work well in college recruiting. In the pros it would mean nothing.

Kids in the 2019 class were 2 the last time Gruden was a coach. They know him more as the weird quarterback show guy on ESPN in the spring and the shitty MNF announcer in the fall. Gruden would be stealing exactly 0 kids from Alabama and Georgia and Michigan and OSU. No kids today want to play for Gruden.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a MUCH bigger Michigan man than Bears fan, but still.

They're putting his name recognition and the "splash" that his hire would create (at least in the media) long term wins and losses. They should be going after Matt Campbell or Mike Norvell or Blake Anderson, someone who is a young, winner and can come coach your program for 15-20 years and win a bunch of games.

It would make sense and he should get a look, but USC fans seem to want to get rid of him. I know he's a great recruiter but they seem to dislike his schemes/playcalling. I guess they had to promote him to OC this year to get him to stay around and it hasn't been great. But also their offense is 14th in S&P so who knows.

is PJ Fleck. Yes, he's at Minnesota but there's interest from Tennessee on Fleck.

Some Bleacher Report guy says Frost and NU are close to a 7year $35mil deal. (The link is not to Bleacher Report. I wouldn't do that to you, dear reader.)
"The Huskers could be closing in on a massive deal to hire Central Florida head coach Scott Frost, according to one report.
"Nebraska is 'close' to a 7-year, $35 million agreement to bring Frost back to Lincoln, per Lars Anderson of Bleacher Report. No other reports have confirmed this, nor has the school."
