Another Michigan Basketball non-conference game revealed
Michigan will take on Southern Miss at home in 2017-18 per this article from July 1. Haven't seen it reported anywhere else on our end.
2017-18 Non-conference so far is pretty loaded-
- 11/13 vs Central Michigan
- 11/16 vs Southern Mississippi
- Maui Invitational (11/20-22) field includes games against 3 of the following teams: Cal, Chaminade, LSU, Marquette, Notre Dame, VCU, Wichita State
- B1G/ACC Challenge at North Carolina
- 12/9 vs UCLA
- 12/12 at Texas
- 12/16 at Detroit (at the Pizzarena)
- 12/21 vs Alabama A&M
- vs Air Force
USM is a tomato can. They went 9-22 last season.
That's an underwhelming Maui slate this year to say the least.
I don't know....I mean, you potentially get to play a school actually called Chaminade, but the problem is that you have to go to Hawaii to do it and it is a home game for them, since they are in Honolulu anyway. I suppose if there's any upside, you get to see that they do in fact have a basketball team and that their presence in the invitational each year is not simply an administrative error.
Downside: It's Chaminade. They host this tournament and are 7-78 in it.
Well even though its a "home game", they have to fly there too, since Honalulu =/= Maui
That the Maui lineup looked weak was my first thought after looking at this as well. They typically bring in two top 10 (or so) teams with the hope they'll meet up in the finals.
That's a thing this year --- and it's taken a lot of premiere teams (more specifically, a lot of premiere teams that have shoe deals with Nike).
Maui (and all other exempt brackets) have sort of suffered because of such. I'd rather spend November in Maui vs. Portland, OR --- but Nike's money talks.
331 RPI and 325 in the kenpom last year...drag.

I can see the future....I see a Maizen....I see anger....I see Beilein bashing....I see an overpopulated planet with dwindling resources and environmental degradation and hunger and war...(The last one is unrelated to the others, FYI)...
If we're going to play bad teams, why not at least play local teams. I would think the payday would be cheaper due to travel expenses and I'd probably be more interested in seeing them play Wright St. or Toledo over Southern Miss.
At least we're moving towards schools most people have heard of and not the UMES and Coppin States of the world.
like Michigan in that one.
Bold strategy there Cotton.
USM didn't used to be the joke that they are now. They unsurprisingly cratered after the NCAA leveled sanctions in response to Donnie Tyndall's two year reign of lawlessness in Hattiesburg.
We weren't a threat back then. A fringe tournament team.
Not anymore.
also run the wishbone? Hard to prepare for in a few days.
AFA BB is putrid. They cannot give tickets away. Even for 2 Cokes.
Please tell me that somehow LaVar Ball will be coming to the UCLA game. Isn't his younger son now a freshman on the team?
Should be half way decent non-conf game!
