2002 Michigan vs Utah -- Highlights
Finally got this one done. The first meeting between the two teams in 2002. This is the only copy of this game online and there are no highlights anywhere else that I could find.
Michigan was 2-1 and coming off a loss to Ty Willingham's ND team that Returned To Glory.
Lethargic crowd. Similar to the 2004 San Diego State game which was also a close game against a then-Mountain West team and was the week after a road loss to a crap Notre Dame team.
Perception maybe is that Phil Brabbs was a great kicker here for some that don't remember or weren't there for this season. This was because he made that famous game-winning FG to beat Washington in that 2002 season's opener.
But in reality, he stunk it up after that game and even during it as he missed 3 FGs prior to the big one.
This was the final start for Brabbs as he went 3-9 in FGs on the season before he was yanked for Adam Finley who took over the kicking duties in addition to punting until super freshman Garrett Rivas arrived the following season. Finley went 7-10.
This was also the last time Michigan beat a current-Pac12 team.
I can't wait to be pissed about 10-3 seasons again.

I think most people here remember Phil's on field performance. But dude is fighting cancer. I think we're more than happy to remember the kick against UW and throw everything else out the window considering that.
Thankfully he'll be remembered for that game-winner against Washington.
I remember being bored to death by this game.
I was bored to death by the "highlights".
Gotta tell the story of the game. The entire story. Not just the scoring plays.
My M00N highlight video is 22 minutes and 52 agonizing seconds. Half the video is of a 0-0 game with miscues, turnovers, missed FGs.
The M00N game is a 3 minute highlight at most.
Let me know when you start doing videos.
Well played.
I'm thinking Moe was merely taking a shot at the incredible assfest MOON was and not necessarily you mining for 22 minutes of pure hell to vomit all over youtube.
Sometimes I'm up until the wee hours of the morning doing these games because I'm either at them and just getting home or it was a night game. I was up past at least 5am doing last year's PSU game.
I had some fun with M00N. After Northwestern missed their 2nd FG attempt of the game and the score was 0-0 in the 3rd quarter, I put M00N in blinking letters on the screen.
All I could do that entire game was laugh. It was hilarious to me. And the ending couldn't have been more perfect. Siemian falls down on a 2 point conversion and the game is over.
Get a room!
A highlight video is not 20 minutes long. If you want to do a game recap (which you are doing already), then call it a game recap.
I honestly don't know what to call it, really. Recap sounds like it's something where there's narration like a Michigan Replay.
I'm doing exactly what WH does with his videos. Long ago in a land before time, YouTube had a rule where videos had to be under 10 minutes long so his videos used to be more like highlights. Now that that rule is long gone, his videos have gotten bigger and sometimes near 30 minutes.
Game recap does imply that there will be some type of narrative. Highlight also implies a short verison of the most important plays. Maybe there is a better term, or maybe we are just arguing about scemantics. But keep doing what you are doing, I actually enjoy the longer form videos.
And my origional comment wasn't a slight at you, just a general "holy hell that game" type of comment. I imagine a 3 minute clip of yakety sax.
I was disappointed by this game. I thought the team would be up more at home after the close loss to ND. Kind of though LC may have another 4 loss season after this game. The worse game of the year was that awful 34-9 whipping by Iowa at home during HC. Iowa dominated both our lines that day. Overall, Michigan was loaded with talent this year! I was disappointed back then playing in the outback bowl. But now I would be ecstatic with only 3 or 4 losses this season!
Actually, I enjoyed it. Only criticism is showing the Utah PAT...only show those if they're missed.

One of my all-time favorite Wolverines. If he could have stayed healthy, I believe he would have been one of the best RBs in school history. I will never, ever forget his game vs. OSU in 2003. One of the best individual performances in school history.
The kind of game we hated under Carr and would have killed for under Rodriguez. Low-scoring and just barely managing not to lose.
The comparison to 2004 SDSU game was apt.
Taco Pants sighting at 9:55.
Also: The Reverse Guy at 13:55.
Mark Jones can't resist a Rice and Curry comment at the end.
Look like Edwards did not poses the ball long enough, but was called a catch and fumble recovery for Michigan for a 1st down after they went for it on 4th.
I remember this game well. I watched it while tending my then-3 month old daughter while my other daughter and the rest of the extended family went apple picking and hayriding.
I'm still ambivalent about who got the better deal.
This was my first ever Michigan game that I attended! Not sure that there could be highlights though, as I recall it being a pretty boring game lol. I do recall Phil Brabbs getting a first down on a fake FG on a handoff from Navarre though.
Edit: the fake FG is shown at 1:30 in the video! A younger me is actually in the frame somewhere, as we were seated right behind the goalpost about 13 rows up!
This was your first game? And you came back for more? Kudos to you.
horrible at this game. I was about one of four people that stood up and cheered in my section when Curry returned the first pick inside Utah's 20. Crowd was dead from the get go.
The defense gave some reasons to cheer after that. Braylon gave us a couple plays to cheer for on offense. Other than that, I can't blame the crowd for being dead.
The next upload will either be 2005 Indiana where Michigan led 41-7 at halftime or 2005 Northern Illinois aka TACKLE GARRETT WOLF ALREADY.
I can't wait until going 6-2 in the B1G is disappointing. I'm so sick of going 3-5.
Our Pac12 games since then have been two losses each to Oregon, Utah, and USC.
Even more ugh is our overall OOC record against programs currently in Power 5 conferences and Notre Dame from 2003 through 2014: a sparkly 9-17.
Carr was lucky that 2002 was Ron McBride's last year at Utah instead of Urban Meyer's first.
Michigan also played Bowling Green in 2000 which was the year before he got there.
But was Lloyd Carr lucky? He out-coached Meyer in 2007 with an unranked, 4 loss team that beat the #9 ranked and previous year's national champion in their home state.
We have a good chance of going perfect through B1G play if Henne is healthy in November. He wasn't, so we got a glimpse of what the future would look like without good QB play.
It still boggles my mind that Michigan is 1-2 lifetime against Utah with a much higher than zero chance of it going to 1-3 soon. Incredible.

You'd have to be a true Wolverine devotee to squeeze 19 minutes of highlights out of that game.
A Utah grad I worked with who was in the Sandy, UT, office of our company and I talked major smack (on IM) before this game. He actually got inside my head, and I thought we were going to lose. I wasn't really crowing about this game come the following Monday.

This is a classic. The type of game that lead to the pining for RichRod.
Michigan got up 2 scores in the first half and then played fiddle faddle missing FGs and running the clock. The defense throttled Utah until late in the 4th quarter when they finally broke through for the inevitable TD. So a game that Michigan seemed to dominate was suddenly very close. Then the offense couldn't finish the game and it was white knuckle time until the final INT.
I especialy love this post game quote from Carr.
"I'm very concerned,'' Carr said. "I don't know what else to
do. We've been excellent in practice, but we have not been able to
take that to the games.''
My mom ended up in the hospital with heatstroke after this one, IIRC. Wasn't a lot of fun.
I said to myself, "Oh, this is the miserable 10-7 win where we stunk it up on offense and the defense saved us". That happened way too often under Lloyd. Also, Navarre was so damn tall but got passes knocked down all the time like he did in this game. He never did get that fixed, as I recall. Then again, 10 and 3 with painful wins sounds like heaven compared to where we've been most of the last 7 years.
