META: How to post a link in the OP
We see a lot of inability to post links in OPs, and lots of people apologizing in case they did it wrong (no offense to recent posters, this is a chronic issue). I am sure this is not the first post to explain how to do it, but I do see the linked "HTML primer" in the board FAQ doesn't exist anymore.
Anyway, here is how to do it.
1. Copy your link.
2. Click the chain in the post editor. Make sure your cursor is where you want the link to go in your post.
3. Paste your link and click "Save"
4. Your new link will now be highlighted. Changing the link text seems a bit buggy in Edge, so that is outside the scope of this post. You get the raw url, better than nothing!
5. OPTIONAL - If you are unsure if it is still a link (the colors can be hard to see), you can click the "Source" button and look for an "anchor" (<a>) tag. If you are clever, you can change your link text here, by changing what's inside the anchor tag (<a href="do not change href">this part is the text</a>).
I hope this has been helpful. Post other topics for META and I can do some simple tutorials. Embedding images, tweets, and youtube videos come to mind...

Next up, embedding images!

Short version: to link something, click the icon that looks like a chain link (or a paper clip).

ok does anyone know how to embed tweets/youtube videos etc in comments? That's always mystified me. I'll hang up and listen now.

^ this button

For some reason, that button for embedding tweets doesn't work for me on Chrome. But if I go to Safari it works just fine.
For youtube videos, you can also use the Source<> button: <p>YOUR LINK HERE</p>

Haven't noticed the browser difference over here. Though I know for GIFs in particular, some sources seem to work (giphy, gfycat) and others (tenor) don't. Maybe just me?
December 5th, 2022 at 3:29 PM ^
Using Vivaldi (Chromium based) I get a "failed to fetch content" message. What I've been doing for tweets is clicking the ... "More" menu at the top right of tweet, selecting Embed Tweet, then copying the URL under the "What would you like to embed" from the next tab that opens up.
In the MGoComment box I click "Source" (last item) to get plain text, and type:
<oembed>[tweet URL goes here]</oembed>
and click Save.

Thanks for the workaround. That's much better than opening Safari whenever I want to post a tweet.
Just a test:

Thanks to the MGoUser who posted it - sorry, I forget who.
December 5th, 2022 at 3:33 PM ^
Yeah the "Insert Media Embed" function doesn't work for me in Chrome either.
December 5th, 2022 at 5:10 PM ^
Do you have the MGoBlog Enhancer plugin for Chrome enabled? Following Seth's advice, I just disabled it and now the Media Embed function works for me.
December 5th, 2022 at 4:20 PM ^
Embedding tweets is actually pretty easy. It's the oembed tag
(oembed)the direct tweet URL(/oembed)
And of course, swap out those parenthesis for < and >
Or... just hope that I'm surfing around and I usually just post it as a reply in the comments. :)
December 5th, 2022 at 3:15 PM ^
Click the Media Embed button and paste in the URL of the Twitter post or YouTube video.
December 5th, 2022 at 3:17 PM ^
And if you're not sure if you formatted everything correctly, there's this handy button called "Preview" where you can see what your post will look like before you actually submit it.

One thing does puzzle me ...
Why do my YouTube videos show up in such a small window? Though I think I've seen others show up a more 'normal' size. (Yes I'm envious)
I've made some half ass attempts to expand it but no luck yet
December 5th, 2022 at 3:32 PM ^
If you copy the "embed" code from the YouTube video (found by clicking the "Share" button in the YouTube video description), then click on the "Source" button here in MGO and paste that "embed" code directly into the "source" code of the post / comment:
Then when you click the "source" button again to go back to the "normal" view, you'll see a full-sized video like you can see here below:

Ah, thank you!

Just because ...

I usually clock 'Source' to switch to html, then twitter, youtube, etc. usually offer an html embed where you can copy the code and paste it in here
The code looks like this:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">ok Michigan engineering: we got a month to redefine football as consisting of two second halves</p>— mgoblog (@mgoblog) <a href="https://twitter.com/mgoblog/status/1599267917706579968?ref_src=twsrc%5E…">December 4, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
But if you paste that into html mode, it'll come out like this:
ok Michigan engineering: we got a month to redefine football as consisting of two second halves

You can always use Preview to check your work
December 5th, 2022 at 3:09 PM ^
You can type something first, highlight it, click the chain and paste the link, and your text becomes the link.

Good tip!
December 5th, 2022 at 3:25 PM ^
Note: We also added media embeds and didn't tell anybody. See the little graphic with the + sign? Click on that, put your youtube or twitter link there, and okay.

Seth, for some reason the media embed button does not work (at least for me) on Chrome. Once I press OK it doesn't do anything and I can't exit from the media embed window. It works just fine on Safari though. Just FYI.
December 5th, 2022 at 4:38 PM ^
Likely a Chrome plugin. I know somebody once made a plugin for MGoBlog to add some features they wanted that may not be working with updates.
December 5th, 2022 at 5:08 PM ^
You nailed it. It was the MGoBlog Enhancer plugin for Chrome. Once I disabled it the Media Embed function works.
Thanks!

Moose are great eating, but the problem is getting them quartered and out of there before the griz come around.

I would like to subscribe to your Meta MGoBlog posting protocol YouTube channel.
December 5th, 2022 at 3:43 PM ^
But what if I just want to post a LINK?!?!?!
December 5th, 2022 at 3:47 PM ^
Thanks.
As I've mentioned a few times here, I didn't know how for a long time till someone posted instructions. I'm guessing the instructions will have to be repeated periodically. Not everyone in the MGoBlogosphere is constantly reading it.
December 5th, 2022 at 3:50 PM ^
Just here to ask OP why he’s using Microsoft Edge.
December 5th, 2022 at 4:25 PM ^
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOULD SOMEONE SHOW ME HOW TO EDIT AN ORIGINAL POST????
December 5th, 2022 at 5:58 PM ^
Because the OP and many of the responses are so informative, I just stickied this thread.
December 6th, 2022 at 6:54 AM ^
Can you unstick a few?
Stickies are an entire page on mobile
December 6th, 2022 at 6:53 AM ^
There are way too many sticky posts
December 6th, 2022 at 10:39 AM ^
I stickied yesterday's thread in the hope that more MGoUsers learn how to link websites, tweets, Instagram posts, etc. With so many new users having joined the board (and numerous long-term members who still don't know how to link), it's painfully obvious that there's a need for a how-to-post primer.
I'm on mobile too, but I'm seeing 40 thread titles per page of the MGoBoard.
You might want to check your page settings.

No I mean every post "above the fold" is a sticky , gotta scroll past like 8 stickies to see new content

Because the 'Media Embed' button recently disappeared from the toolbar, here's a link to something Blue@LSU posted last week: a 'workaround ' that will allow embeds of YouTube videos on the MGoBoard.
