Official Snowflake Thread: Defense

Thought the defense played reasonably well. About 7 of UConn's points came on a TO, and another 7 off that horrible punt bounce. They had trouble at times, but they played well enough to win.

The Defense played great...that is all

Finally, but yes he did.

True, but I don't feel too good about it going forward since that backup RT is said to be awful.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:33 PM ^
UConn had one real drive and they got 7 points. Otherwise they got zilch.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:34 PM ^
holes in the middle of the field and we still give up too many big passing plays.
September 22nd, 2013 at 12:10 AM ^
Yes, and while I don't want to lack appreciation for an overall good defensive game, they are making the same mistakes over and over. Think we see the skinny post during Big Ten play? Think Joe Bolden will get challenged in pass coverage? Think Raymon is going to see alot of outs and slants? Thankfully we have a bye week to address these persistent issues.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:35 PM ^
they did what they had to and played an overall solid game.

Desmond Morgan!

For how bad field position wise, the defense was put in they did ok - solid not great. The secondary looked bad at times getting gashed by low level players (Uconn's top WR was OUT), the DL better than previous weeks. But it is UConn so cannot take anything out of it. We still get gashed by runs (UConn was 2nd worst in FBS entering the game) and we make every QB look like Tom Brady for at least a half. It is going to make COnnor Cook look legit. But again considering the short fields and awful turnovers by Devin they did ok. If these turnovers continue at a 2-3+ per game clip it wont matter.

UConn was 1-11 on third downs and 0-1 on fourth downs. That's a very good defensive performance.

I'd also question Bolden in coverage. He seems a bit lost out there right now.

That's the scheme. You want to dare the QB to throw short of the marker, and then quickly tackle the WR before he can get any YAC. Gaining 26 yards on 4th and 29 did UConn no good.
September 22nd, 2013 at 3:15 AM ^
to win the game. Luckily he was all over the pass, took the right angle, and tackled immediately. It just seems like if we have to depend on one guy to not give up a 4th and 30 we're in trouble.
September 22nd, 2013 at 5:40 AM ^
What you're saying is that you want a defensive scheme where the safety can afford not to do his job and the play will still work? Sign me up!

The defense played well, but UConn is not very good either. But, it was nice to see the D shut down UConn in the 4th quarter.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:37 PM ^
Seemed to be the culprit on a few UConn passes.

Much better this week than last. Too many open receivers in the first half. Pass rush stepped up and DB's clamped down in the second half and we saw dividends.

We gave up only 206 yards, a vast improvement over the last two games. Given the fact that UConn only managed to run 57 plays on offense, that means we gave up about 3.6 yards per play, which is also a big improvement. I will definitely take that going into the conference schedule.

Oh yeah. And while it doesn't matter, this was another week of massive holding by the opposition on some plays. I thought the defense played reasonably well, though pass coverage by LBs was suspect even with the Morgan INT.

Frank CLARK!
Good halftime adjustments by Mattison.

If not for the defense Michigan would have lost to two of the worst college football teams in the last two weeks. You switch out Joe Bolden for Jake Ryan and this defense looks dang good going into Big Ten play. But I will say this, I think Chris Wormley needs more snaps. Looked to be making plays when Michigan needed them.

Thinking of how hard Sparty will be targeting Ryan's knee in that game. I'd almost rather he waits another week.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:42 PM ^
We still can't cover a soul, and our defensive line only looks decent when goign up against the worst offensive line in the country. So, no, this game doesnt make me feel any better about our defense.

That kind of pessimism belongs in the Offense Thread 1 post down.
September 22nd, 2013 at 11:31 PM ^
Uh, I'm talking about the defense, not the offense. It's not pessimism, it's fact.

Defense did everything it had to against an inferior opponent. Just about what it should have been.
Though I am a bit concerned about the backfield. Naturally, an under-talented UConn team won't stretch the defense; on that last play, though, you can see that Avery was completely burned by the receiver (85 or 86, couldn't tell, very tall) and that a good throw to that receiver would've resulted in a UConn TD. Good thing that wasn't the read.

Please stop assigning blame on single players when you don't know the playcall. It just doesn't make any sense.
