tOSU's "The" and Ukraine?

The embassy of Ukraine has posted a reminder that their country is Ukraine, and asks that people avoid the old usage, "the Ukraine."

Maybe Ukraine could work out some kind of deal to collect each extra "the" they get and ship them all to tOSU. Aka, TCBU (That College Beneath Us).

Actually, some interesting reasons why it was called "The Ukraine". It has something to do with the name having a meaning outside of it being a country. Similar to how it's "The Neatherlands" as Neatherlands = Lowlands. So adding a "The" in front of the name makes sense.

I was just thinking about this last week. We don't say, "The Canada," or, "The France," but we do say The Ukraine. The only other the country I could think of right away was Thee United States of America!

The Mexico? No. The Italy? Again, no. Maybe The Congo, but that's more of a region even though there is a Congo country, I think.

I heard something about this on the radio a while back.  The Ukie's are all butthurt about the The because it somehow reminds them of when they were a Russian vassal state.  Apparently they've never heard of The United Kingdom or The Netherlands.
