I apologize for not using a thread title that is up to your standards, david from wyoming. But Lion Kim attends The University of Michigan, and this is in fact, a University of Michigan blog so I don't believe this is off topic at all.

...you're wrong.  Kim is representing Michigan big time at the Masters and MGoBlue.com is featuring the hell out his appearance

Lion Kim at the 2011 Masters

From his latest Masters Notebook:

The Maize and Blue Nation
Kim was overwhelmed with the number of "Go Blues" he heard in Augusta on Monday. He said he must have heard it more than a thousand times during his practice round.

"It just makes me so proud to be able to represent this university," said Kim. "There were Maize and Blue shirts and hats following me today. It is just too amazing to see how far the reach of our fans goes."

They've canceled appearing in this weekend's scheduled collegiate tourney to support their teammate.

Lion's an amateur.  Wearing maize & blue.  And this is a big deal for UM and UM Golf.

(And it probably won't hurt recruiting, which we know is never OT here.)

Mr. Kim plays on the University of Michigan golf team . . .  .

This is more on topic than discussing draft status, tressel, or 90% of other things posted on this board in the last 7 days .  . . .

Thanks for the update.  I will be there on Friday and look forward to seeing the Michigan bag on the course.  I think the winner will be one of the three.  Watson, Stricker, or Glover.  Hopeing to see Kim make it to the weekend though.

I've got $10 on Tiger to win at 10-1 odds.  Tiger has a flair for the dramatic and it doesn't get more dramatic than Augusta.  I think he announces to everyone that he is back this weekend.

I won $60 on a $5 bet on Phil last year at 12-1.

Love and Chema are of course the next Ryder Cup captains.  They were paired last week at Houston, too, for that reason.  They both play at a reasonable pace; Lion might actually be slower than either of the two Tour Pros.

Chema is not playing well right now; apart from being a two-time Past Champion, he'd have no business being there.  Good for Lion, he won't be hitting first all the time because Chema isn't very long.  Davis has been hitting the ball pretty well.

Best of all, they are both genuinely nice guys, but quiet on the course and that's a good combination for Lion.  Both Love and Chema were every bit the golf-stud that Lion is, at age 21 or 22.  Lion will learn from both of them.

We'll get to see a lot of Lion on the Thursday telecast; he goes off at 9:02 on Friday.  Can anybody tell if his group goes off 10 either day?

The most notorious example was when Jack Nicklaus finished his last Masters, missing the cut by a couple of shots, on the 9th hole on a Friday, which grieved all of the golf historians who were deprived of Nickalus' final Masters walk up 18...

I forget now if they had done that on one day as a result of inclement weather.  That may have been it.

I believe that was due to inclement weather, I want to say that was the masters in 2005? and when Nicklaus finished, not only did he make birdie, like his last hole in the Britsh Open at St. Andrews, he also "played the weekend" because the second round was completed on Saturday.

This is a great pairing. I'm sure you know this but the US Amateur Champion is normally paired with the previous Masters program so Uilhein get Mickelson and Ogilvy. However other amateurs usually get an older previous Masters winner who is likely not to be in contention and a lesser name such as David Chung with Sandy Lyle and Alex Cejka. J. Jeong (British Am Champ) is with Larry Mize and Sabbatini. Matsuyama (Asian Amateur Champ) gets Glover and Immelman. Nathan Smith is with Streelman and Stadler.  I would say outside of Uilhein, Lion and Matsuyama got the best two amateur pairings.

Lion was slow in college so you might be right about the pace of play but his slow pace was due to his habit of leaving his bag at the front of the green and then having to go get it and walk to the next tee after finishing the hole. It was an insignifcant habit in college since college players are notoriously slow and he will have a caddie in the masters so it may not be a problem. Great pairing though overall.

He is also playing with Bubba Watson and Aaron Baddeley in the par 3 contest. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets over the nerves he could win the par 3. Saying it is a dream week is an understatement.

Except for the part where you hope he wins the Par 3 contest.  You bastard.  (Some nice Waterford, though.)

;-)

btw - So Lion decided to take an ANGC caddy, is that correct?  Very, very smart move in my humble opinion.

I didn't mean that I hope he wins the Par 3 so he has the curse of the Par 3 winner - for those who don't know, the Par 3 winner has never won the tournament. It is just a near impossible task to win your first professional tournament, let alone the masters, as an amateur so it would be sweet to claim low Am and Par 3 winner which are within reason. I know you knew what I meant but still.

And yeah I believe he is using a club caddie. There are two sides of that coin. Personally, I never enjoyed having a caddie who was not completely in tune with my game but Lion has probably had the same caddie for his 3 prevous trips to Augusta and all week this week. Not that he wouldn't trust the club caddie but just personally, I think players most often prefer someone they know and who knows his or her game well. The other side of it is that the caddie will have an immense knowledge of the course and most likely experience caddying in the tournament which would be unequaled by a friend, teammate or coach. If he is comfortable with the club caddie and he thinks having a club caddie will help him play his best, then that is all that matters.

didn't it feel a little weird to have a caddy at all?

My thinking, is that with one of the National's caddies, there will be a little distance between him and Lion.  The guy won't say a thing unless Lion asks, which is more like the way that Lion is used to playing with coaches and assistants in NCAA competitions.

I know that if I had a coach caddying for me, I'd be tempted to carry the bag for him, and ask him what he wants me to do...

I expect that you know better than anyone, that there is a different physical and mental rhythm, between carrying your own bag (as Lion must do in every Junior and every NCAA competion) and having a caddy.

I could be wrong, but I vaguely recall that Lion was carrying his own bag in the USAm (where he'd have been allowed a caddy) in that brutal gut-check at Chambers Bay.  Am I wrong about that?

It is weird having a caddy. In my experience I would rather carry my own bag than have anyone as a caddy. I only do well with my dad, my best friend/roommate/teammate, or my girlfriend who is on the golf team. I have never done well with a club caddy or someone that I don't really know. Having a coach caddy would definitely be strange. I know Rickie Fowler had his old assistant caddie for him at the memorial last year because he is now the OSU coach, and he almost won that tournament - so it works for some people. The rhythm is a big part of it. As a college player you play 14 of about 20 tournaments each year where you are required to carry your own bag. To me, carrying your own bag is about making the decisions and being aware of your own game. I liked it because I could be in my own world, focus-wise. With a caddie sometimes it is easy to get lost in deciding on shots together. Trust is always my number one factor. With my dad, he had so much experience after a while I didn't have to worry about him with tournament etiquette and that kind of thing, and with him, he just shuts up and carries the bag with the occasionally nice shot and fist bump for birdies. So in that sense it was like carrying my own bag in that I chose all the clubs, I walked off all of the yardages but I just didn't carry the bag. With Nick, he knows everything about me and my game. The shots I play, the ball flights, my distances, and he and I were always reading greens exactly the same - I have a great deal of comfort with him on the bag and it makes a huge difference. With my girlfriend, she mostly just carries the bag. I can bounce ideas off of her on short game shots and she has tournament experience to know what she is doing but again it was like carrying my own bag in that I did everything except carry the bag.

I'm not sure about Lion at Chambers Bay but I bet he had a caddie. I know that once you get past medal play qualifying and into match play at the US Am you are required to have a caddie so I imagine he had one at some point. I have played in a few Western Ams and US Ams with Lion and I don't recall him ever using his dad or a friend caddy for him, he has always used a local caddy so this is pretty normal for him.

I was hoping he would play with Tiger and Jack. Not sure if Jack is still playing, I don't think he is.

But come on, Lion with Tiger and the Bear....OH MY!

Sadly, Jack is no longer playing; he does play in the Par 3 contest, usually with Arnold Palmer.

This reminds me of the time that Bernie Smilovitz did highlights of the first game between the Winnipeg Jets and the San Jose Sharks, set to the music from West Side Story.

There aren't enough ill-tempered louts this year to have what the US Open traditionally calls their "prick pairing."  I'm sure there will be enough in the Open to keep the tradition alive, though.  Part of the fun of going over Open pairings is finding out what new face just "joined the club."
