Robert Marve considering UM

Submitted by mhwaldm on
I apologize if this topic was addressed earlier in the day. But i didnt see any posts about it. Apparently this kid from Miami is considering a transfer to UM among several other big time schools. http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/95251-dad-miami-badmouth… What do we know about him? Obviously we would not turn away a solid qb. I see that he was a 4star qb in the 2007 class. Whats his deal with eligibility? I assume he'd have to sit out until the 2010 season.

Don't count on it. He'd have to sit out this season, and if he came to UM, he'd have to compete with Forcier, Robinson, and the 2 QBs that we'll like get in this recruiting class come next year. Marve is considered a pro-style QB but does have some mobility, but he doesn't seem like an ideal fit for our offense.

he might decide that he wants to face the best and inflate his egotism (HE IS THE BEST) like USC's stable of backs. Although he might be afraid of it considering he bolted after Jacoby Harris seemingly won the job. It could be interesting, he is more experienced than Tate or Denard, and more talented than Sheridan... we could see.

Obviously hes not ideal for our system. but with two unproven freshman competing for the starting job, (even with potential big time 2010 qb recruit in Gardner, i dont think M would turn away a solid, experienced qb, even if he is a pro-style qb.

Marve isn't really a good quarterback, for one. The whole time he was sharing the field with Jacory Harris it was brutally obvious Harris was the better QB. He's plenty mobile and an obvious upgrade over Nick Sheridan, but as WTB said he'd have to sit a year and let both Tate and D-Rob work in ahead of him, and Devin Gardner (yes I'm counting my chickens) would be onboard after that and really there just isn't room if Marve's goal is to be a starter.

Marve was in an auto accident before his freshman year. It put him behind, and he never really made it all the way back. His semifinal and championship HS games were on TV here, and he put on great performances in both, including an amazing fourth quarter comeback (actually two comebacks)over prohibitive favorite Seffner Armwood. Armwood, incidentally, got something like eleven kids scholarships to play in college that year. As for "character issues," his only true issue was being frustrated at not playing. Also, he was being scapegoated for the underachievenment of an unimaginative offense. It became obvious to him that the politics were not in his favor and he transferred. He was in the news because his coach thought enough of his talent to not allow him to transfer to any school in the ACC or the state of Florida, including his hometown school, USF. After pressure was put on coach Randy Shannon, he changed it to Florida and FSU. So: if Marve had issues, why wouldn't Shannon want him to play for his rivals? Why wouldn't Shannon just do like RR did with the human twinkie and let him transfer even to a "rivalry" school? I'm not saying Marve is perfect, and I don't really know if he will ever be back to what he was before the accident. But RR would have to give him serious consideration. Marve could handle the spread option with no problem. And his HS coach, who is putting out some pretty HQ citizens as well as ballplayers, is still solidly in his corner. So, while I do agree that his interests would be better served by a pro offense, I don't agree that he has any "character issues" that should keep RR from looking at him. A kid Marve kept on the bench for two years, Aaron Murray, will be the incoming QB at UGA this year. Marve has the talent. It's just a matter of him finding the right place to play. I don't think Miami is going to turn out to be the right place for any QB to play until they address their coaching. Shannon is a defensive coach (and a damn good one) but he really isn't doing much with the offense yet. To Marve's credit, he didn't say anything on the way out. His dad was PO'd because of the transfer restrictions, but Marve had enough class to leave like a man. There was no "family values" diatrabe, no Mallet-like whining, he just left. He may not ever be much of a college QB, but he may still be a great one. Wherever he goes this time, he has to make the right decision. He could end up like Threet or he could end up like Bomar. You just never know.

Threet was better last year than Marve. He had about 100 less passing yards and averaged half a yard less an attempt, but had the same amount of tds (9) and threw almost half the int's (7 to 13) in addition to having nearly 100 more rushing yards and almost a yard advantage in yards per rushing attempt. Weird that Threet is your example for a failed transfer yet Marve just needs to find a place to play, isn't it? Marve only helps in the worst case scenario of going into year 3 of the RichRod era with still no Qb, and even then, if Forcier and Robinson are still behind him after a year of game experience to his year of practice, I don't think its ridiculous to say that, Robert Marve or not, we're fucked. The chances Marve actually helps this team are so slim, its not worth taking the hammering Rodriguez would take in the media if he brought on a QB that was suspended twice at his previous school, and has an arrest on record. Sorry, he might be good, but I'd rather he try to be good as far away from UofM as possible.

QB depth is always important, so even if he didn't play much he may be worth having. Although I agree that getting suspended twice by Miami and coming here would be a bad PR and thus not likely worth it. As for Tater's comment, he concluded that Threet was beyond awful last year and in fact has said many times that Threet "will never be" a D1 QB no matter what. Despite much evidence that Threet was no worse than dozens of pretty decent D1 QB's were in their freshman year, and better than many.

"Also, he was being scapegoated for the underachievenment of an unimaginative offense. It became obvious to him that the politics were not in his favor and he transferred." Oh man. Oh man does that sound familiar. I think Marve should transfer back to Tampa and play for some junior college there. He obviously doesn't have the talent to hack it in a major college.

As for "character issues," his only true issue was being frustrated at not playing. Also, he was being scapegoated for the underachievenment of an unimaginative offense. It became obvious to him that the politics were not in his favor and he transferred. He was frustrated at not playing, yet scapegoated for the offense's performance? That would be like blaming David Cone of the poor showing of Michigan's offense last fall. Where did you get this?
