OT: Will Muschamp to Florida

Submitted by gater on

This hasn't been announced as official yet, so all the caveats still apply, but it looks like Will Muschamp (Texas DC/Coach in Waiting) will be Florida's next coach.

Seems like a great get, Texas recruiting ties at a Florida school.

Edit: Just saw this come across Twitter (yikes):

RT @j_wells247 Talk out there that Major Applewhite will come with Muschamp as OC.

Other than Texas imploding this year (seemed more because of the offense), this seems like a solid hire. Having said that, I can't believe they didn't go harder for Mullen.

Why wouldn't you take the same job with more pay and opportunity to move up?  If he goes and kills it at FL, he would be considered HC material far faster than staying with RR.  With the way things have gone, Magee would be foolish not to got to go to FL and prove he has been more behind the OF success than RR.  Plus, the recruiting is so much easier at FL.  Geez, I starting to want to be a UF coach!

Muschamp won't be playing with substantially better talent in the SEC (as opposed to Texas' built in advantage in that area) versus the LSU's, Georgia's, Tennessee's and Alabama's of the world. With a ton of returning talent this year all Muschamp did was nothing. The offense was weak in Texas (due to Gilbert and the OC, mostly) but still Muschamp has responsibility in his team's terrible effort in a number of those games.

Hello: Ron Zook at Florida. It won't be any better.

Mack only has to have a few years left, right? And now they lost their slam-dunk next coach.  A crippling blow to Texas; there are a lot of unhappy people in Austin right now.

but with the turnover which is inevitable/has already occurred (not sure if some of the staff has been let go already) and Mack getting up there in terms of years Muschamp was one of the pillars of the team.

If nothing more, the defense should slip up a little and it's never, ever good when your coach-in-waiting bails on you, either because he sees the writing on the wall in terms of decline/decay of a program or because he does not desire to wait around any longer.

Don't get me wrong, but that's pretty close to an un-inspiring hire IMO when the likes of Bob Stoops, Gruden, etc. were being named.  If I was a Florida fan, I would have wanted someone who had already proven himself as a head coach.

Disagree.  Why would a coach like Stoops move from one high-profile program to another?  He's found his niche in Norman.  Muschamp is/was regarded as one of the premier coordinators in the nation, so I don't think anyone will be particularly disappointed.  This isn't a "Hoke to Michigan 2007" situation.

I didn't say it was a bad hire.  I'm just saying there are only a few coaches around that are in "elite" programs that wouldn't go.  Stoops is probably one of them, but his name was being put out there.  I only used it as an example.  But what about those top coaches at non-elite schools like Kirk Ferentz at Iowa, Peterson at Boise, Patterson at TCU, Harbaugh at Stanford, etc.  Frankly I thought Mullens was going to get the job.  See what I know.

I thought Mullens had the job too.  I thought it was also surprising that Muschamp was the only guy they interviewed.  I think what it may come down to is that Muschamp is only 40ish years old and has a lot of upside.  All of those non-elite coaches you listed are 50+ and I think UF was looking for a guy that can lead this team for many, many years to come.

First, its Dan Mullen.  No s.

Second, I don't understand why people don't think this is a big deal.  They poached him from Texas, where he was guaranteed to be a HC.  I think the reasoning was that if he was good enough for Texas to try to lock up forever, he would do for Florida.

The spash with Muschamp is that nobody even thought he was on the market.  He's been Texas's coach in waiting for so long that I naturally assumed he would never leave.

Very interesting.  Wasn't he the highest paid coordinator in CFB?  This might be leading to something big at texas, meaning a major down fall next year leading to another big time program opening.

will come out of retirement and coach somewhere else in college after Tebow is done in the NFL in a few years.  Tebow will be the OC, and subsequently the coach-in-waiting.  My sources have told me this is a done deal, and simply waiting for Tebow to flame out in the NFL.
