Sometimes you've got to look past the jersey and realize that this is still a kid. I hope something good will come of him and that he can turn his life into something positive.
I agree. As much as I dislike Ohio State and love seeing them lose recruits, I never want it to be because of something like this. If it means he's a star football player at OSU, I hope this kid can get things back together - life supersedes football.
No kid deserves to have to go through that. I'd rather he got his chance at Ohio State than what he's going through. There is a line where the rivalry means nothing. This kids life is past that line. Here's praying that he ends up okay.
It's a tough situation, but does anyone else feel a little raw for having read all of that? I mean, clearly the original poster had some insider information from a family member who likely is not at liberty to go telling others the things that students tell them. I am a little bothered that it ended up on a public message board. Wish him the best of luck though.
that's really messed up and too bad.
This might be the first time I've even come close to feeling bad for someone with Ohio State.
My heart goes out to that kid. The whole situation is very sad.
I hope he can resurrect his life.
I wish a kid like that could get some kind of waver to get a scholarship anyway. A year at a well funded college, surrounded by team mates, coaches, and councilors who give a damn, good food, and some uplifting activities would probably do more for his future than even an NFL career ever could.
A kid like this might be better off at a JuCo. I don't think throwing him into a high-pressure environment, at a school for which he isn't qualified academically, is likely to work out.
The kid needs a new environment. As long as he's in that bad situation, he will not likely get any better. Hopefully he can get back in school and then land in the PAC-10, far away from all those bad influences.
He is still young enough to get out of his situation hopefully people will helop him through it and not shy away.
that OSU sticks with him through the bad just like they did the good. If you wanted him before when you thought he pissed gold, try to help him get back to pissing gold.
Well, if it's true that he's dropped out of school, then it's gonna be pretty hard for them to stick with him. I'm sure they'd want to, not just because of his football ability but because they want to help him with his life, but if he's not in school and isn't graduating, then there's no way they can keep him.
than their own players? (joking)
All the kid has to do is finish high school, and some program will give him a shot. I'm hopeful he figures that out.
OK, TOB said that if he doesn't finish high school, OSU can't hold on to him. Your response was "All he has to do is finish high school." That is the issue at hand here. Players can't play college football if they drop out of high school.
This is what your comment looked like:
MOM: Nestive, there is no way you're having dessert until you finish your dinner.
Nestive: Fine! But what if I finish my dinner?
If you don't eat your meat, how can you have any pudding?
How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat!!??!!

but no shit. You misinterpreted what I was trying to say... but that's probably my fault due to some imbibing. First, I was implying that OSU requires students to attend classes in high school, but not in college (the lame joke to start the post). Second, I was just reiterating that I hope he gets his act together, because there isn't all that much he has to do to get a chance somewhere. I'm aware of the fact that he can't go to college without finishing high school. I was simply trying to emphasize how little effort it would take for him to get a shot, hence the "all he has to do"... comment.
And before I finish my dinner, I want to know what's for dessert.
On a lighter note, the first comment to that said he should go to OSU anyway to be in a better place.
Hmmm... OSU? Better place?
I'm sure he meant better than where he is now, and after hearing about his surroundings, just about anywhere would be better, OSU included. Tasteful, though.
Say what you will about Buckeyes (and I imagine you'd be oft correct). However, the Buckeyes responding to that thread are good guys. I would know, too; in my free time, I've posted alongside them for the better part of a decade.
is that some douchebag felt it necessary to post all that personal information. If it's true, then it's completely private business; yet there is this prick who feels the need to exploit the situation for some interwebs-cred (like STREET CRED but also NOT USEFUL). You could still make the prediction without the detail. What a tool
All in all, a very unfortunate situation for Turner. Best of luck to him
We certainly did not need to know all those things about Turner's family, or his behavior in school. He could have just said, "He is going through a lot of personal issues and is leaving school."
At first, I read the Scout post incorrectly; I thought the guy wrote that Turner was living with someone to whom the OP was related. Now I realize the OP is merely related to a teacher of Turner's, making his decision to post information regarding Turner's specific problems in definitively poor taste.
is having people like the OP and his teacher friend exploit the kid, who already had a bad enough life.
Agreed. It's not uncommon for a kid with the absurd athletic skills of Turner to get treated by school officials like he's a golden goose for his entire life. Often, the kids who make it generally have people in their personal lives who keep them straight. Unfortunately, Turner doesn't seem to have that, and the people left - the school administrators, have likely always been more concerned with his skill on field and the track.
