OT: Ford Field to host CONCACAF Gold Cup matches

Submitted by Brodie on
Well, now that being passed over for the World Cup bid hurts slightly less, Detroit has been selected to host two opening round matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Hopefully we get the Nats. http://www.freep.com/fdcp/?1292535147407

Between this and that game in the Silverdome over the summer, it seems like they're trying to pave the way for a Detroit MLS franchise (as they should - I'm pretty sure it's the largest market that doesn't have a team).

There is also very little soccer culture down there.  In most of the South, soccer is a spring sport, to avoid conflicts with football (and even then, many high schools have spring football). It's probably just as well that they don't have any teams.

The state of Michigan, meanwhile, has one of the highest youth-participation rates for soccer in the country.  There is real potential in this market.  It should get a franchise.

for regional presence, MLS should put one team down there. I'm thinking Orlando has the inside track at the moment. Hopefully the Silverdome people get serious and start work on a stadium... I can see Detroit, New York City, Orlando, another southwestern team and someone else rounding out the league.

Now, if the format is the same as the 2009 tournament, there will be three groups of four (USA, Mexico, Canada as top seeds of each). In 09, Group A played on the 1st, 4th, 7th day of the group stage, Group B was on the 2nd, 5th, 8th, and Group C was the 3rd, 6th, 9th. Looking at the sites above it would mean that:

Group A: Cowboys Stadium (Arlington, Texas), Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte), Soldier Field (Chicago)
Group B: The Home Depot Center (Carson, Calif.), FIU Stadium (Miami), Red Bull Arena (Harrison, N.J.)
Group C: Ford Field (Detroit), Raymond James Stadium (Tampa), KC Soccer Stadium (Kansas City, Kan.)

Looking at these, I'd say its almost certain the USA is in Group A (only group that has NFL stadiums all three days, 105k in Dallas). Mexico will probably be in Group B (LA, Miami, New Jersey - all areas with large Mexican/Hispanic populations) and Canada would be in Group C (Detroit close to the border).

Since the winner qualifies for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil I expect the US to field their A team and not their B and C team scrubs like they did in 2009.
