I knew he was a biblical figure—I just had never met anyone, or even heard of anyone, named Nimrod. Seeing an author named Nimrod prompted me to dig around a bit, which is when I learned that it is not uncommon in Israel.

When I was a kid there was a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Yosemite Sam is hunting Bugs, but Bugs tricks him into getting in an oven. Bugs was about to roast him, but then stops and says, "Eh, I couldn't do that to the little Nimrod."
A funny name, but I never knew what it meant. So I finally looked it up and found that in the Bible, Nimrod was a mighty hunter.
