The Saints are the perfect example of how this is not true. Our offense has been roughly the same the last 4 years. Before our Super Bowl season our defense was a joke. We got a great defense and look what happened. We held Arizona to 14 in the divisional game. We picked off Brett Favre just as the Vikes were about to kick the game winning field goal. And in the Super Bowl we sealed it with a pick six.

Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships

The Saints had a great offense and a middle of the road defense. If you look at their stats from last year, they finished 20th in points allowed and 25 in yardage. The only areas where they were in the league's top ten defensively were in passing touchdowns allowed and turnovers (interceptions, fumbles and total turnovers, which obviously played a big role in the Super Bowl).

Their offense was so good, though, that they were able to lead the league in scoring, total offense and in point differential.

There's some truth to the idea that defense wins championships. Honestly, I think it's just that when a team plays poorly, a good defense is more likely to keep it in a game than a good offense is. Offenses also seem more prone to off days.
